The center-left academic Robert Putnam is well known for his research on social cohesion, but his research led to a discovery that he suppressed for years. When Putnam finally came forward with his data, he revealed that diversity has negative impact across almost all domains of social cohesion. People in diverse societies trust the government less, have fewer friends, participate less in civic organizations, and spend more time at home watching television. We'll review Putnam's findings and discuss why they remain controversial.
