British political commentator Melanie Phillips recently made a social media post claiming that the British are not allowed to have a national identity but Israelis are required to have one. The arguments stemmed from her belief that the British were not a real ethnic group with a right to a collective self-determination, while the Israelis do share a real ethnic bond, so their claims are valid. Unfortunately,  Phillips is far from alone in this belief, which has created a real barrier to robust nationalism.
