According to some estimates, between 50-70% of African-Americans die intestate – i.e. without a will. There’s a lot of misunderstanding about estate planning – especially in the black community. Most people believe that only those who are affluent or have a significant amount of assets to protect need a will or a trust. BUT – this could not be further from the truth. Estate planning is an essential part of financial planning and legacy planning. In this last episode of our 3-part financial planning series, we will discuss many of the myths surrounding estate planning with Attorney Delania Barbee. We’ll dig deep and discuss some of the specific challenges facing African-Americans in legacy planning and why taking charge of your estate – no matter how big or small – is necessary to mitigating loss and preserving the wealth you do have for generations to come.

The Business of Marriage
Marriage is big business in some social groups - LITERALLY! Marriage for many is a way to attain, retain and increase wealth for themselves and for their heirs. But, this rule does not hold itself to be true for every group of people in society. Although marriage is on the decline, it is still enduring and thriving as an institution among the elite and other moneyed circles. Among individuals in lower socioeconomic stratas, and among certain ethnic groups, marriage is on the decline. Social scientists are suggesting that this is contributing to the racial wealth gap and overall wealth inequality in the country. We’ll explore why this is happening and what the long-term effects of this trend might be.

President Joe Biden has tentatively discussed forgiving at least $10,000 student loan debt, but many in Congress are pressuring him to forgive at least $50,000. Unfortunately, the student debt crisis, disproportionately impacts African-American students, and is starting to become one of the prime factors in the increasing racial wealth gap in this country. Today Dean and Kimberlee will dig into the real stats behind this phenomenon and discuss why this debt crisis looms so large, and what can be done to counter its impact.

When Nick Cannon made a polarizing comment about the Jewish community in the summer of 2020, he had his show “Wildin’ Out” snatched from his hands immediately. Although he was the brainchild behind the show, it was actually Viacom who owned the trademarks to the show, meaning in real world terms - it was their show. Not Nick's. In this episode, powerhouse entertainment and business attorney, Nyanza Shaw is lending her expertise to The 2857 podcast to discuss some of the myths that can hurt your partnership. Explaining the delicate balance of ownership and commerce, navigating the potential legal pitfalls behind creative ownership and what you can do to protect your name, your brand and your creative works from being exploited.
