A sitdown with Josh Martin and Marty Height as they seek to balance the righteous with the ridiculous. Please join us for a conversation about cheap coffee, counseling, and Christianity.
Laziness Isn't Real (Ep. 219)
Welcome back T&J family! On this week's episode, Marty discusses his recent adventure and the long drive back from Arkansas. We then discuss the longest drives we have ever taken and would love to hear the longest you have ever driven in a day. This leads to a winding discussion that ends up on the idea of laziness. Josh proposes that laziness is not real, but is a reflection of value. We dive into this idea and discuss how everyone can be motivated but not always by the same goals or stimuli. We break down how we can use this to learn more about ourselves and to increase motivation towards goals or tasks we have traditionally avoided or failed to accomplish. Enjoy! [email protected]

Becoming an Iceman: How Narrative and Pressure Shape Us (Ep. 218)
Welcome back T&J fam! We launch into this week with a discussion on uncomfortable experiences - like having an eyelash in your eye during a counseling session. We would love to know what makes getting through your job hard as well. Josh then discusses the new Iceman album by Drake and the behind the scenes drama that is shaping societies perception of Drake and the release of three albums on the same night. This turns into a conversation about societal narratives and how pressure impacts us. We discuss how stress or pressure will either make us or break up, but is something we tend to avoid. Enjoy! Are you pursuing God or just running from Satan? (Ep. 217)
Welcome back T&J fam! This week start on a slowly and more somber note. Marty has not had the best week and it becomes Josh's responsibility to lift the spirits. We fail in that attempt and just talk about shoes for a while. Then, Josh sees if Marty can list the 10 Commandments and questions what there purpose is in scripture. This leads to a discussion on conviction, guilt, and shame and what factors into people changing. We discuss repentance and how we should be turning towards God, but sometimes are just pursuing God because we are actually trying to avoid Hell and Satan. Food Poisoning, Hallucinations, and Redeeming Our Hidden Parts (Ep. 215)
Welcome back T&J fam! This week we dive into a nice little recap of Marty's experience with food poisoning (or whatever demon possessed his body) and the hallucinations that ensued. Josh then opens up about hallucinations he had on third shift and what happens whey you accidentally take large amounts of muscle relaxers. This discussion turns into a conversation about one of psychology's forefathers - Carl Jung. Josh discusses Jung's theory and the different parts of who we are as people. We discuss the public facing views of self and the parts we try to hide. We also discuss how this integrates into our faith and how we operate as Christians. Enjoy! [email protected]

Finding God & Gratitude: Cancer, Mania, and Neurological Unknowns w/ Will Troutman (Ep. 214)
Welcome back T&J family! This is a special episode that we have been looking forward to since it was scheduled! Marty's good friend and graduate school companion, Will Troutman, joins the podcast to discuss his life's journey and recent struggles. Before we dive into Will's story, we have a little Dirty Brew Review with some dark roast coffee from Short Sleeves Coffee in Western North Carolina. Josh and Marty may not always agree on life, but what they do agree on is that this is some of the best dark roast coffee they've had. Following the review, we dive into Will's powerful life story. Will discusses navigating pediatric cancer at the age of 10, being diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder after a manic episode in his early 20's, and recent neurological struggles that even the doctors cannot figure out. Will is open and transparent about how this experience has impacted him. We discuss how Will's faith has been shaped on this journey and how he seeks to find God and gratitude in the midst of the suffering. Check out his information below and reach out if you'd like to connect with him! Enjoy! [email protected]://www.livinghopewnc.com/

The Devil: Real or Just a Metaphor? (Ep. 213)
Welcome back T&J fam! Have you or someone you loved been scammed?! And why are older people always the targets? We seek to answer these questions on this week's episode. We also try to figure out what new technology or technique is going to scam us when we get to be older. And speaking of deceit, we discuss the devil and whether he is real or just a Biblical metaphor. Does the Bible speak of a real fallen angel that is literally causing problems, or is this just symbolism that helps us understand the collision of good and bad around us. Feel free to drop your opinions to the address below. Enjoy! [email protected]

"Our Belief in a Savior Leads Us to Believe we are Saviors" (Ep. 212)
Welcome back T&J fam! (Sorry for the poor audio. We used the wrong mics to record.) This week we jump straight into the news about the pending moon landing. Besides stating the obvious - Did we really land there before? - we debate what might be found on the dark side of the moon. We also can't figure out if the moon spins or not. If you know the answer to any of this, shoot us a message at the address below. Then, we take a hard turn and dive into happiness. We look at how personal interpretations influence situations and how we can project our values onto other. We hope you enjoy! [email protected]

Does God want surrender or empowerment? (Ep. 210)
Welcome back T&J fam! This week we start out acknowledging the amount of dinosaur hate Marty has been receiving since last week's episode. We then transition to a discussion on Christian book names and how every pop Christian books seems to communicate the same message. This leads to a discussion on what the core principles are that all these authors are trying to highlight. Marty says that surrender is at the core of the Christian life, which Josh says that it is empowerment. We debate the two and try to better understand each other's perspective. Enjoy!
