You are listening to Taking Art Apart, a bi-weekly podcast presented by museum West Den Haag. We are Rosa Zangenberg and Yael Keijzer - young professionals finding our way in the cultural sector. We’re launching an experimental series of themes one may come across stepping into the art world, whether as a young artist, established institution, or curious viewer. Episode 6: In all times, there will be something defined as art
Is art a forecast? In this extra long, final episode, we delve into possible futures of art and art spaces. What role does art still have to play and in turn, how does it adapt to possible near-realities? These days many artists connect their practice to sustainability and the anthropocene. Maybe art can offer a cure for the world, or rather the wake-up call. How do we navigate this future discourse? This episode features visual artist Asad Raza and researcher and writer Katazyna Jankovska, who express their concerns for art and future discourse. We also hear Taconis Stolk, director of the ArtScience faculty of the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, on where he sees art education in the future. Guests in this episode: Asad Raza, Katazyna Jankovska, Taconis Stolk and Hendrik Hohlfeld. For more information, check the link in our bio.

Episode 5: The art market works like its own ecosystem
In previous episodes, we have discussed the currency of art in various forms, from the NFT’s influence on the art market to a more mental form of currency of success. This time, the starting point is a much more common form of currency connected to the art market: money. Whenever money comes into the talk, an artist’s practice starts to look like a business. Yet it is not uncommon to hear the statements that “money kills creativity”, and that “art has to be autonomous”. But to what extent is this really true? In this episode, Yael and Rosa talk with Nadine van den Bosch from the Young Collectors Circle, intrigued by their mission to save the art world, one artwork at a time. Guests in this episode: Nadine van den Bosch, Thijs Jaeger and Lotus Rooijakkers. For more information, check the link in our bio.

Episode 4: Is there a party for being rejected somewhere?
Today we are talking about the notion of success in an artist's practice. And perhaps more importantly, the rejection. Is art only validated with success? How do artists deal with and play with pressure and competition? Seeing as we are young professionals in the art world ourselves, we take a more personal approach to this topic. We explore the experience that most artists, curators and art venues share, but never really mention publicly. Also, art academies are constantly evolving as they try to keep up with more universal academic standards, expectations of the market, and not in the least, the political climate. Guests in this episode: Stella Loning, Giulietta Pastorino Verastegui, Gideon Eillert, Judith Reijnders and Cecilie Fang. For more information, check the link in our bio.

Episode 3: These people are an element of my work
This episode is about authorship and the reception of art. Is art about the artist? What happens when an artwork is finished? Does the artist take responsibility for how it is received? Does it matter if art is used for a different purpose? Who is really the artist? In this episode, we hear fellow podcaster Yael discuss her research on the death of the author - a concept originally attributed to the arts of writing - but, nonetheless, as relevant in the context of visual arts. We also invited Dutch artist Mark IJzerman for a talk on what happens in the process of art making, and dealing with the complicated authorship of art. Guests in this episode: Erik Kamaletdinov, Xaver Könneker, Shantychoir Barend Fox and Mark Ijzerman. For more information, check the link in our bio.

Episode 2: I enjoy not being in control of my material
In this episode, we examine the material - the matter that gives shape to the objects we define as art. Traditionally, we associate art with a physical object, an entity that can be hung, placed, or simply touched. But more and more, the requirement for something physical seems to become irrelevant in the art world. Firstly, digital art challenges this drastically, and has done so for decades already. Take the example of the rise of the NFT: the non-fungible token. Secondly, performance art has changed the concept of an object as opposed to the maker forever. So, indeed, what makes something an artwork? Is it the touch of the artist on whatever the artist may touch? Guests in this episode: Lotus Rooijakkers, Cecilie Fang, and Thijs Jaeger. Episode 1: Curating is more like making dinner for friends
You are listening to Taking Art Apart, a podcast presented by West Den Haag. In this exciting first episode, we look at the mediation of art. How do we understand what an artwork communicates, when every perception is subjective? Who is the mediator, and what is the role of a curator? When artists make art, they most likely want to say something with their art, whether it is an emotion, or a political statement. Whether intentionally or not, there is possibly something they are communicating. Guests in this episode: Julija Mockutė, Thom Vink, Akiem Helmling and Asad Raza.
