real and approachable
Loved how the episode 'Sustainability at the Thanksgiving Table - Joy, Burnout, and Hope' brings sustainability into something as familiar as the Thanksgiving table, making it feel more real and approachable. The honest conversation around eco-guilt, burnout, and hope really stood out without feeling overwhelming. Really enjoyed listening to this and how it ties climate action back to everyday life and community.

Hooked on Sustainability Defined!
I’m a newer listener and already obsessed! The new hosts are fantastic—it’s so refreshing to hear women leading the conversation in sustainability. They’re super engaging, fun, and bring great energy to the show. I also love the shorter format—it’s perfect for my commute. I’m currently getting my MA in sustainability, and I’ve started diving into older episodes with Jay and Scott. They have such a great way of breaking down complex topics and making sustainability feel accessible to everyone. I spent a long time searching for a podcast that hits the right tone, and Sustainability Defined is the only one that truly delivers. Highly recommend for anyone curious or passionate about this field! I can’t wait to see where the new hosts take it from here—excited for what’s ahead!

Great Hosts, Great Format, Great Podcast
Loyal Definer Jason here. Thank you for bringing this podcast to life. I am an avid consumer of all global issue and climate related topics, and the way you two present this critical information is the best I have had the pleasure to experience. Climate journalism is critical to ensuring a sustainable future for our planet, and you are doing a great job of it. Keep it up!

Two Thumbs Up and a Gold Star!!
When I was hired to be a Sustainable Energy Lab teacher for grades K-5, I had no clue how I was going to break down sustainability and renewable energy sources for an elementary school crowd. While I respected the planet and tried to do as much as I could to reduce my carbon footprint, I had no “earthly” idea how to begin my journey towards educating our future leaders. That’s where your podcast comes in to play. Trust me when I say, I listened to a ton of sustainability content but none of them resonated with me like your podcast and the amazingly wonderful jokes. With each episode, I felt like I had a better grip on what I needed to teach and incorporate into my curriculum. Now, over half way through the school year, I listen to your podcast every morning on my way to work. Not only can I impress my students with party facts and tidbits about sustainability, but I have developed an engaging curriculum around many of the topics featured on your show. Thank you for creating an interesting, funny and entertaining way to learn about helping our planet and embracing a sustainable mindset. If I was your Sustainable Energy Teacher, I would give you two thumbs up and a gold star!

Educational & Entertaining!
I’m starting a Master’s in Sustainability in January so I was looking for a podcast that would give me a good refreshing swath of knowledge on sustainability. This one hits the nail on the head. Each episode gets me excited for that particular vertical of sustainability and has helped me gain a deeper understanding of each topic when I may not have dived that deep before. Well done guys!

All the stars!
Hi! I started a new job at my company about 6 months ago with a focus on sustainability and ESG sustainability. I love the new role, but quickly found my eyes were glazing over while trudging through dense articles and industry publications about recycling and refrigeration. This podcast has saved me! So much valuable info in such a digestible and entertaining format. Thanks Jay and Scott! Your loyal listener, Maggie

Love Sustainability Defined!
Whether you are new to sustainability or a seasoned expert, Sustainability Defined is the perfect podcast to add to your sustainability education journey. In the myriad of climate change podcasts, Sustainability Defined stands out as the springboard for diving into this material! I am constantly overwhelmed by the volume and severity of climate change. Jay and Scott break down daunting topics into digestible bites! I find that I can actually teach others about the topics presented, because Jay and Scott start at the core of each area, and then build on the nuances with expert guests and witty commentary. I look forward to the new episodes appearing each month! Thanks!

Get Serious About Trying to Understand Sustainability and Have a Few Laughs While At It
Scott and Jay are doing an amazing job at explaining sustainability from a wide variety of perspectives, which often times are not so easy to understand but they condense it and explain it in very digestible and amusing ways. I am using this podcast to learn more about the field and gauge if I see myself pursuing a career involving sustainability. Thank you guys for taking the time to explain these important topics in such a fun manner!

Your brain grows three sizes (in a good way)
A cocktail of neurological delight. RECIPE: Two parts mind-tickling knowledge. One part effortless friendship. A dash of puns (heavy pour), and a few drops of "woah." Combine, and stir in a chilled glass of rock solid research. Serve with a slice of inspiring expertise (or lemon). If you are looking for an accessible entry into sustainability, and eager to find a podcast that delivers truly fascinating knowledge on subjects far and wide, episode after episode, then Scott and Jay are your guides. Cheers!

Integrity, knowledge, and style
This podcast is like the people I want as friend - it’s smart, honesty, and hip. As a sustainability consultant since 2009, I know the easy drift toward preachiness and doom. You won’t find that here. Listen if you want to have podcast friends who are knowledgeable, modest, and looking out for the greater good. Thank you!

Triple layer chocolate cake good
Found this podcast a few weeks ago and have been binging it ever since. As someone who is very interested in sustainability, but sometimes has a hard time narrowing down the scope to do more reading/learning/etc myself., this podcast does a great job of organizing topics and providing a detailed but digestible analysis of the information out there. Their corny jokes are the icing on the cake!

This podcast has taught me tons about a wide variety of sustainability topics. I always recommend it to anyone who is hoping to learn more. They go into the perfect amount of detail to teach something new while still being interesting. I also love how they hit topics that are often left out of the sustainability discussion.

Great Information Delivered
I just finished listening to your: “*UPDATED*Episode 16: Sustainable Beer with Katie Wallace.” Not only has Fat Tire been one of my favorite beers since since 2001, I am now stoked to hear it is America’s first certified carbon neutral beer! I have been systematically going through your episode catalog for the past week and my only fear is I might finish listening to previous episodes before you can make more. Keep going! W. Hey Dudes! I’m an Interdisciplinary Major, (Business, Mass. Communications and Sustainable Community Development), and my biggest frustration is that the content is out of date and incomplete. For every fact I’m provided, I need hours of personal study to really catch up on where the worlds at with current sustainable efforts. Thanks for providing honest conversation about issues that are close to my heart and important for every living thing on this wonderful planet! -Zoie

A Lovely Reminder of What’s Important
Sustainability Defined is a truly amazing podcast, filled to the brim with interesting facts about sustainability, plus some incredible dad jokes. I am a recent engineering graduate meandering through my first year of employment, wondering what’s next for me, and this podcast has helped to remind me why I chose engineering in the first place. The world needs more experts in sustainability! There are so many facets of sustainable living, and Jay and Scott do a beautiful job of defining each one. Thanks for doing this, and thanks for inspiring me!

Strengthening My Resolve
Sustainability is such a borad topic these days, it feels like everyone just throws it on their work as a tagline, and boom! You're all the sudden saving the planet. But so much of that is messy and can actually lead to misinformation. Insert Jay and Scott. Their passion for bringing real, detailed, true efforts of ongoing sustainability is refreshing and empowering. Hearing the insight from Guests who are currently advocating and developing sustainable practices and development is enlightening. As someone who has been on the fringe of this type of work, Jay, Scott, and their host of guests have further inspried me to go all in and go after my dream of building back safer, sustainable communities with long term solutions for critical infrastrucutre across the country, and hopefully the world. Thank you, and keep going!

Changed My Outlook on Everything!
I started listening to this podcast three years ago when I used to have a longer commute to work. Coincidentally the first episode was on e-bikes so I was pretty excited when my place of work (an outdoor retailer/co-op) started carrying them. I geek out when I see things like Juice Box charging stations in someone’s home after hearing about it in the podcast. In a state like Texas that only cares for Oil & Gas, hearing about alternatives or moving away from them is an immense relief. It’s been great hearing updates from previous episodes since I’ve been a listener so long too. I’ve always had an interest in environmentalism although my field of study had nothing to do with this field. Listeners especially don’t need a degree in anything related to environmentalism in order to appreciate this podcast. Needless to say this podcast is definitely for everyone considering how sustainability affects us all and there’s so many ways to be more sustainable. I’ve sent episodes like the ones on urban greenery, eco-anxiety, racism & the environment, and e-bikes from friends to even my eyelash extension tech. The party facts are the tidbits my neurodiverse brain is already full of so I love this format. While the climate crisis makes us all feel powerless, it’s a relief to listen to this podcast and be reminded that likeminded people are actively combating it or at least care to be informed. Great work Scott and Jay! -Jack/ie (they/them)

Ugh, I’m such a fan wow!
Jay & Scott really do incredible things through this podcast, especially making me laugh out loud in the middle of anywhere with these “bad” jokes. Not only can you visualize & admire the structure of information being relayed but you get inspired to want to just apply to jobs in every field that this podcast has covered. Whether you’re a sustainability geek (like everyone should be, for the sake of momma earth) wanting to hear some thought provoking conversations or honestly, if you have no idea about the environment, this podcast really is the one. I think installing solar panel powered speakers by every major city’s urban garden in the US with a side of New Belgium sustainable beers so people can ride their electric bikes and listen to every episode of SD is the next step cause everyone should get informed my these two podcast studs. Forget just being a human in the world, be a definer for a better world.

Best Podcast for Aspiring CSR
I found this podcast by researching how to learn more about CSR and Sustainability. I’m applying to grad schools for an MBA focused in sustainability, striving to work in CSR one day. I have zero experience but a passion and drive to have more sustainable practices personally and professionally. I have written notes from almost every episode, follow your guests on LinkedIn, and this podcast guides me in career path towards CSR. From the great chemistry of these two awesome hosts, the dad jokes that are so bad they’re good, and the even better puns, this podcast is as entertaining to listen to as it is educational.

Sustainability for the win!
Jay and Scott are great hosts who cover a wide array of thought provoking sustainability topics. Their podcasts inspire me and motivate me to research the topics further. I love putting on this podcast any free moment I get; the podcast keeps my mind fixated on sustainability. I’m an architecture student at CU Denver, and Incorporating sustainability into the built environment is a big passion of mine. These podcasts fill my thoughts with great solutions to problems I didn’t even know existed. Jay and Scott’s topics are always well researched, and they objectively present information. They have top tier experts weigh in on every topics too. Yes their jokes are bad but their podcast is good! I highly recommend episode 57 on energy storage. I’m gonna be sad when I binge listen to every episode. Keep up the good work!

Hooray for Sustainability Defined!
Hi Jay! Hi Scott! I’m a newbie! I have been a fan of your podcast since February of this year (2020). I stumbled upon your podcast when I was looking for something to listen to on a 4-hour solo car ride to visit friends. Best decision! I am a Black woman, born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, currently living in Fresno, CA. Sustainability and climate change are fairly new interests for me. This was not a topic really discussed growing up with my family or peers. Every episode, I’m always delighted with the new information I gain from your content, but Ep 54 with Faith Briggs got me smiling from ear-to-ear. Thank you so much! I was so happy to listen to a guest that I related to a great deal! I was so moved that it compelled me to write this review to let you know what that meant to me. Haha! Anyway, thank you so much for your content and your bad jokes! I’m staying sustainable out here! Camille Gaston

Great podcast to get into sustainability
This is an awesome podcast and should be a must listen for anyone interested in sustainability and its different topics of focus. Jay and Scott make the topics fun and you can tell they did their research. Perfect for listening in the car or on a jog.

Best thing to happen to me in 2020!!
Literal best discovery. Scott and Jay are incredible, they’re the kind of people you just can’t help but want to be friends with (and not just because they bring rad party facts to the table). They’re quirky, fun, and engaging and you can tell they put so much thought and research into each podcast. I’m simultaneously astounded and fascinated by each and every episode. For someone looking to pivot into sustainability, Scott & Jay’s podcast serves as an incredible foundation; they cover a wide breadth of topics with enough depth to educate you and leave you intrigued, ready to dive in deeper. Sustainability is of paramount importance, and I’m so thankful to have the opportunity to join their journey to define sustainability.

One of my favorites
Found this podcast on a site listing the top 10 eco-friendly/sustainability podcasts. After listening a bit to all the ones they listed this was the only one I stuck with. The hosts are are funny and engaging. They have great chemistry together and really seem to care about the topics they discuss!

Funny and interesting
I hope Josh and Clark like running early in the morning because I take them with me. Every time I go running before. All of their podcasts are very interested and some have podcasts have even given me project ideas for my new Sustainable Living Club at Bellarmine College Preparatory. Specifically, I mean the podcast about creating an urban green space. If you guys ends up reading this review one of your episodes, I think it would be very interesting and informative to do an episode on the effects the livestock and dairy industry has on the environment.

Realistic, but Optimistic
It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the giant, amorphous abyss that is “sustainability,” but Jay and Scott do such a great job of breaking down big topics into digestible pieces that everyone can understand and be hopeful about. Love the variety of topics and guests!

Fantastic Podcast
Scott & Jay are the most dynamic duo since PB&J. You’ll be entertained, educated and empowered to go on your own sustainability journey. I’ve learned a lot from the episodes- and even more once I started exploring the resources they mention. This podcast is a must for anyone looking to become a more informed member of society. In the era of misinformation, good sources are indispensable. As far as sources (and jokes) go, these guys are the best!

My Favorite Podcast...BY FAR!!!!
Scott and Jay do an amazing job describing sustainability to those of us that don't fully understand it or have the time to do all the research ourselves. They have the research to back up everything they talk about and they do it in a way that anyone, no matter their walk of life will be able to comprehend and relate to it somehow in their lives. Their humor and bad jokes make me smile and laugh every episode. You couldn't find a better duo than these two. Since COVID-19, I have been able to set aside the time to dig into my own sustainability habits and listening to Scott and Jay has been eye opening and insightful. I will definitely be a listener for life and will be reccommending Sustainability Defined to anyone and everyone I meet. In the words of Scott Breen, "You all stay sustainable out there!"

Astounding! Top-tier! Bad jokes!
Scott and Jay have kept me company on many long drives in my Prius. I’ve been listening for years, and I look forward to the first week of each month because of it! The episodes are a solid chunk of time and they never drag. The horrid jokes are the cherry-on-top, you HAVE to listen to them! I find myself chuckling along to each of them without fail. These are the type of guys you’d love to have over for dinner, wine, and some homemade bread. Give them some of your time, it will be in great hands! A sustainable mindset is paramount to combat these bleak times, and I thank these two for their informative discourses. - Julian

I have gad this podcast added into my library for quite some time. Honestly, I have just been ignoring it. Recently, I ran out of other things to watch (lol). The podcast is WONDERFUL, and it’s a shame I haven’t been listening. I am now catching up on all of the old episodes! I am already very interested in Sustainability; however, your podcast focuses on various topics I usually do not look into/ focus on. I really enjoy broadening my scope through your podcast, with out feeling like I’m listening to a lecture! Keep up the podcast!!

Informative and fun podcast
As an environmentalist and proponent of renewable energy, I was avidly searching for a podcast that could educate myself in sustainability and environmental advocacy. Luckily, I stumbled upon this podcast and have been hooked ever since. Jay and Scott make the topics fun, refreshing and informative. I hope to hear more podcasts on topics such as the blue economy, the bottle water industry and plant based diet in contrast to animal based diets in regards to CO2 emissions and sustainability.

Helping to shape the future by informing listeners (in an entertaining way)
I’ve been listening to Sustainability Defined for about a month when I was loading up on podcasts in preparation for my summer holiday. I always have high ambitions of educating myself during vacation periods but typically my 2 children successfully prevent that from happening. I was able to listen to a few episodes which really hit home for me and now I’m completely hooked. I’m originally from RI but currently working in Scotland and I listen on my 90 or so minutes a day driving to/from work and am constantly annoying my family with “party facts” that I learn in the show. The Episode with the Walmart Project Gigaton was especially interesting as the company I work for (DSM) has recently committed to science based targets and we are just beginning to explore how to work toward Scope 3 emissions reductions. As a proud millennial I feel sustainability is in my DNA and really enjoy getting to learn through your podcasts ways to make more informed decisions, help to educate others and also influence my professional career as a side benefit! Keep up the good work and the jokes!! Regards, Eric

The OG of Sustainability
I have been on the hunt for a solid podcast that is lightly numerous but also very educational about sustainability. And not just the environmental or the business side. All sides. The big shabang. This podcast might not be the Original OG, but it is the most broad , yet deep OG. BYDOG? Yeah, that works. For those who don’t know, OG means original. I’m using it wrong here but that’s the point. Duh. This deserves the credit of OG because it’s that good.
