Millions of Americans with and without disabilities face a variety of barriers every day and rely on their communities to help in the form of free school lunch, energy assistance, broadband in lower-income neighborhoods, free healthcare coverage, and affordable and accessible housing. The National Library of Medicine reported in 2021 that 11.6% of the US population lived in poverty. According to another report, the poverty rate would be twice as high if programs like these and Social Security benefits didn't exist to subsidize Incomes. Today, we speak with experts Josh Basile (Founder & President, Determined2Heal Foundation / SPINALpedia), Heather Miller (Certified Benefits Counselor, SPINALpedia), Joe Shortt (Independent Living Advocate, Independence Northwest), and Tom Wade (Independent Living Advocate, Independence Northwest) about the importance of preserving and improving Social Safety Nets.
