Maria Mariaaaaa 🙄
Maria was excruciating to listen to, it went from bad to worse. How unaware of one’s self can one be? Other than that big up Suave ❤️💪🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Good concept but insufferable
Suave’s story is compelling, and illustrating the effects of the justice system through him is a great idea. But there is WAY too much focus on Maria and her relationship with Suave. Listening to her interact with him is exhausting, not to mention all the airtime dedicated to her talking about how she feels about the relationship. Enough already!! Honestly I should’ve stopped after the first 5 minutes of ep 1. Made it through episode 5 before I realized I didn’t need to do this to myself.

S1 👍👍👍 S2 👍
Suave’s story is incredible and inspiring. He has such an honest way with words. I could listen to him talk all day. Season 1 is a 10/10 rec. But Season 2 left me uncomfortable. Maria was way too needy and the podcast was clearly infringing on his life at this point.

I love this series so much and I hate that I finished it this is the best podcast I’ve ever heard. We need more episodes!

Conflicted
There are two stories here; the heartbreaking redemption of surviving incarceration and parole, and the emotional journey of caring about Suave and covering his story. The reporting is exceptional, as any fan of Maria Hinojosa would expect. In particular, there are many rawly emotional scenes that give us insight into both Suave and Maria, their world views and their relationship. I can only imagine the editing discussions- I’m sure some of them were heated. I grateful they had the courage to publish the difficult and unflattering passages. I am left torn about my admiration for Maria. Is her fierce involvement meddling and intrusive, or the laser focus of a top-tier reporter? I’m not sure.

Compelling Story, but…ay Maria!
Suave’s story is fascinating and I love the way the podcast humanizes people society generally writes off (i.e. “convicts,” “felons,” etc). Regardless of the label, these are human beings and the more we understand that and work from there, the better off we can all be. I appreciate the way the podcast shines a light on that. I also appreciate the way it shines a light on the “justice system,” and our prison-for-profit system. Suave’s story - and he as a person - is compelling. But Maria’s exaggerated and performative “reactions” to things are a total buzzkill. 🙄 There are moments in her interactions with Suave where there’s a complete lack of empathy or sensitivity. It’s frankly irritating. I’m trying so hard to listen to this man’s story bcz it’s truly worth hearing, but Maria keeps ruining it 🤦🏻‍♀️

Mis understood
Super powerful podcast the host Maria and Julietta sound so under educated around anything street or anything life related they are a super turn off ! Of what could be an incredible podcast because suave story is so riveting , I’m rooting for him , when his car got stolen I get his pain and I would have supported him they were so off base .. I feel like they coddle him as if he’s a child versus his real story .. they are a major turn off hopefully he can separate from them and just do his own thing

Easy to see how this podcast won the Pulitzer Prize. My husband and I, who have different tastes, got hooked and binged the entire first season on a road trip. I think we are better people for it. So that’s a five star podcast for sure.

This isn’t about you Maria!
Maria needs to back off and get over herself. This story isn’t about her. She sounds like a jealous, nagging wannabe wife. This woman is like 70 years old and already has a husband and a family. I just can’t with her.

Loved first season great . Second not so much
I’m not with this giving Sauve a hard time for being furious someone he trusted stole his car . The hosts were giving him no understanding on this then can’t figure out why he ghosted them . Then they only talk about negative comments on his post , when I’m sure he also got support. It’s become all about nagging Sauve . His journey in first episode great . I cried when he was let out .

I love love love this podcast! Suave’s story and journey is one that I’m sure many can relate to. The vulnerability, the honesty, I just love this. Wishing many more years of continued success on you all.

Mr Pulitzer!!
The story from season 1 was compelling. Season two began with just as much captivation. It’s great that he is working with students as a teacher. Music interweaves beautifully throughout the narrations. Well done!

Draws you in
This is one of my favorites of all time it’s like I walked the whole process through with you all! I am so happy that you shared this experience and I hope that many more people will be helped and released to have a second chance at life especially since they were children at the time.

A Story of Relationships and Hope 👏🏼👏🏼
I binged the whole season of Suave today and all I can say is WOW! As a criminal justice professional who works in Pennsylvania and taught a juvenile Justice class at DePaul University in Chicago for 7 years, I was not surprised by a lot but very happy for such a storybook outcome. People do not realize the importance of relationships in reducing recidivism. People have to know that other people care….and I mean that from both sides of this story. It is as much about Suave as it is about Maria Hinojosa. Bravo! Pulitzer Prize very much deserved!

Amazing.
I heard the first episode on Ear Hustle during their breaks in between seasons and omg. I immediately became obsessed. The relationship between Suave and Maria was so authentic. I love everything about this story. I love how real and honest Suave was through out the season! And the Pulitzer episode was the icing. I love it and I hope there’s more to come!

Suave!
I’m a bit late to this podcast but I’m so glad I found it. What a guy. So impressed by his humility and courage. Not many people could come back from such a horrible place. Did Angie face consequences for lying about the assault? I knew Suave didn’t hit her. Congratulations to all on your Pulitzer.

Excellent!
One of the best podcasts I’ve listened to. Excellent work on not a very easy journey for everyone.

Suave
Listening to the story of Suave was inspirational! I work in the prison system and see both sides of this story. We have kids committing horrific crimes!! I also see how drugs are destroying so many lives!! This is where this story started and that’s what I wish the focus was on!! This drug epidemic is generational and it also hits homes where you could never imagine!! I hope that people start to get people help that need the help!! Even if the addict does not want the help something has to be done!!!

Absolutely brilliant work!!
Joining Suave on his journey has opened my eyes up to the harsh realities of the criminal justice system, especially for minors. However, I am inspired by Suave’s relentlessness and the dedication of these women journalists to tell his story and those of thousands others.

Amazing Podcast!
Loved every episode!

I had alllll the feels here!
I couldn’t stop listening after the first episode! What an incredible story. I laughed, I cried and cried some more. As a Latina myself that had several family members go through the justice system for several different convictions can attest to people growing out of crime. These are humans beings also! Suave, you are such an inspiration to so many people around the world now. I’m so proud of you and I can’t wait for more content. Maria, I loved your tender corazon.

So moved
Suave Gonzales, I approve your message too. What a story, thank you, thank you. It is stories like these that move the world. Suave, Maria—that familiar voice—and the producers who put in their own time to track down the past—well, best best best of luck to you in all the years ahead. Thanks too to Code Switch, from whom I learned about this podcast.

Love it, yet so sad
I love how it tells just 1 boy/ man perspective on being a “lifer” to being released 30 plus years later. It has helped me to better understand what young colored boys/ men who are in jail have or are going through. It puts a spotlight on a major problem in the USA. The only reason why its not 5 stars is the amount of profanity, call me sensitive but the F bomb is used way too much.

Podcast
I love any podcast Maggie does but I really enjoyed listening to Maria on this one. These women did a great job helping tell Suave’s story. Suave you are amazing and I wish you the best in your journey to finding normalcy in this world. You will continue to inspire people which is more than most people can say. Thank you to this entire team for putting this story out there. ❤️

hooked after the first episode
I’m a podcast binger and I love these long-form reporting series. After listening to the first episode I can already tell this is one of the best of its kind. For me, it’s just the right mix of humanity, narrative, history, and production. And aside from all that, it’s a powerful and important story to tell. Well done, all around. Thanks and congrats on the well-deserved Pulitzer.

I wanna be friends with Suave!!!
What a great series!!! Maggie, you did a fantastic job putting this together! The story flowed seamlessly, with a roller coaster of emotions. Suave! Man, you are a true warrior! You never gave up hope! Even when the street lights stay burnt out!

Intriguing true life story.
An amazing delve into crime and punishment as it involves POC and youthful offenders as well as how poverty only makes it worse. I hope there are follow up episodes on how this all works out.

Popped up as recommended because I love Ear Hustle. Binged the whole podcast in two days and arrived at work with streaky makeup from ugly crying. I would recommended to everyone.

I listen to at least 3 hrs of podcasts/day. Suave is so good, I found myself binge listening. It’s right up there with Serial and Ear hustle. Just an amazing story. The production and editing are first class.

Not what I was expecting
Nothing about this podcast is what I expected and that’s a good thing. This story is so impactful. It’s truly one that I think everyone should listen to.

Go Futuro!
Another home run for Maria Ina Hosa and Futuro. So much to like here, I will focus on but one dimension, the meta-discussion about the relationship between source and journalist. Essential listening !
