What gives you more anxiety, thinking about the inevitability of aging, or the thought of forgetting your phone password?
I bet it’s the phone password.
We are heavily conditioned to desire interaction with our phone, and with the apps on our “smart phones”.
Take for example the research that went into determining which colors to use for the icons in the standard iOS suite. The green in Messages and Phone, the Blues in Mail and Safari, the purple in the Podcasts icon. All of the pastels used in the interface are shown to cause a release of dopamine.
Looking at an iOS device literally causes your brain to release chemicals that make you feel happy.
Wild right?
All of the social media apps you use are the same.
Its slightly ironic that the notification button for Facebook is a bell (Pavlov anyone?)
So what can you do to fight back against the machine and reclaim your freedom and your mind?
I discuss in today’s episodes some tactics I use to unplug and keep yourself from getting too sucked in to the doomscroll, and start using your phone as a tool to accomplish your goals.
Remember to be kind to yourself this week and stay the course!
Special thanks to Volkor X for letting me use his epic space sci fi music for the intro and outro of this show. Go show him some love!
