The Secret Service was established July 5, 1865, solely to suppress the counterfeiting of U.S. currency during the Civil War. Today, the Secret Service's mission has expanded beyond the scope of counterfeit currency and is mandated by Congress to carry out the integrated missions of protection and investigations.
