Ep 94 Dr. Mark Goulston: Empathic Listening
In this episode, Esmie and Mark discuss: Challenges Mark faced growing up, such as a perforated abdomen that almost killed him, growing up with a depressing background and suffering from depression. Mark's most significant accomplishment in life (dropping out of medical school twice and finishing and preventing others from committing suicide). How to know when someone is depressed (Their behaviour changes, they want to be alone, and most of the time, they seem sad.) Why standing up for a friend could help them to stop being suicidal? How Mark, a suicide specialist, saves lives by listening, showing love, believing in people that feel very low in life and need to know that everything is going to be okay eventually. Mark teaches why calling upon someone who believes in you and having a conversation with them can help you when you're feeling down. Key Takeaways: Life is hard, and we will miss the good days if we give up on them. Never give up on life because there is always someone that's going to need you. You can know when someone is depressed when there is a drastic change in behaviour for the worst. You can save a life by listening and showing kindness along with empathy. You can overcome sadness by talking with someone that believes in you."I asked her what she was thinking and she looked at me then said. 'If you can really understand why I might have to kill myself to get out of this pain. Maybe I won't need to.'" – Mark Goulston Dr. Mark Goulston’s mission is to make the world safe for humanity, one conversation at a time. He does that through speaking, coaching and training as one of the world’s foremost experts on empathic listening with his book, "Just Listen," becoming the top book on listening in the world. Ep 93 Perry Maughmer: Achieve Meaningful Goals
In this episode, Esmie and Perry Maughmer discuss: How Perry learned to become self-sufficient at a young age. He took care of his sister with cerebral palsy and growing up in a small town.  Challenges of his adulthood: Job stability, fitting in, and showing empathy. The qualities of a good leader: Humility, emotional awareness, stewardship, showing others love and care. Challenges leaders must overcome: difficult conversations, controlling emotions, showing empathy and compassion. How great leaders grow and keep employees growing by learning more and teaching is okay to fail because you can grow after failure. Referrals and why good organizations do not struggle to hire good employees.   The right way to communicate with employees. Key Takeaways:  Success begins with caring for others. A true leader leaves things and situations better than how they were before. Great leaders teach others how to lead in whatever they do. They are compassionate and know how to love others, We can control our emotions by giving ourselves time to feel and acknowledge the feeling before we respond. Don’t try to become a leader; get to know yourself and become the best version of who you truly are. Learn the benefits of failure to avoid being scared to try new things. A great business attracts great employees because people love to work for the company.  Face to face communication is best for sensitive or really important work conversations. People try to become someone else when they should become their best selves. Perry Maughmer Bio:I am focused on reinvigorating souls of relentless leaders because great work is never finished. I work best with malcontents and contrarians who strive to overcome their own bullshit in order to achieve meaningful goals. “I think everybody has the potential within them to be a leader if they so choose it. We have to dedicate the time and the effort along with the energy to doing it.” –Perry Maughmer     Contact Perry: Website Linkedin FacebookContact Esmie: Linkedin Facebook Instagram Youtube Subscribe & Review in iTunes Did you subscribe to my podcast?
