We continue with YOUR demands as we make July as gay as June with our theme, MOVIES ARE GAY 4: GAY THE 4TH BE WITH YOU, and we’re presenting them in the classic individual style. This week is a remarkably crafty and genuinely funny story of a transgender woman that is told using (in very particular parodic ways) characters from Batman comics and shows as well as other DC comics characters as inspiration. Superhero fatigue (and Joker fatigue in particular) may have been the reason we’re just now getting to this unique comedy but it’s easily the best Joker movie that exists. Better than most Batman movies. At least on par with Mask of the Phantasm. It’s satirical, it’s subversive, It’s an inspired collage of pop culture iconography and most important of all…it’s gay. Or “queer” if you prefer. Excellent work reclaiming that one guys. MOVIES ARE GAY 4: GAY THE 4TH BE WITH YOU (and also with you). We're starting strong with our return to form as we gay up July to compensate for being too busy last June. The rest of our Gay selections are thoroughly in the 21st century and we take on our first Todd Haynes film discussion in the movie "Carol", which is a lesbian love story and also one of two films where Cate Blanchett plays a strong lesbian in a movie directed by a guy named "Todd". Carol is a pretty simple film that plays a lot of its emotion quietly. Like how they did in 1952. Hear us tell it. WE’RE BACK AT IT WITH A CLASSIC THEME AND A CLASSIC FORMAT! We had zero time in June to record anything for this year’s “Movies Are Gay” theme so by popular demand we’ve decided to expand Pride Month into July as well. We took a poll and it came back 100%. It’s finally time for MOVIES ARE GAY 4: GAY THE 4TH BE WITH YOU and we’re keeping it quite modern this year as much of what we’re discussing is very recent AND we will spread out our session across multiple days which means we’re back to old per-episode “Moviehumpers” style format. (Trilogists will be an exception) This will spread out the content and keep us consistent. Honestly, it should have been like this the whole time but we gotta experiment, ok? That’s what “MOVIES ARE GAY” is all about! Our first and oldest movie discussion will be Derek Jarman’s 1986 film “Caravaggio”. An artful biopic about a pansexual baroque painter who loved knives and was pretty good with them too. Our first Derek Jarman film discussion since “Jubilee”. It’s gay. It’s bloody. Hear us tell it.
