Trying to Get Ahead In Your Career? Create a Career Path
Working at something you’re passionate about doesn’t automatically lead to job satisfaction. A big salary isn’t the key to happiness either.  Being on a career path, having opportunities to move forward is almost as desired as getting a raise. The majority of professionals of all ages, responding to a 2019 CNBC/survey Monkey* online poll, said that more training or learning opportunities would most improve their job satisfaction after a higher salary. Having more paid time off came in second, and a more flexible schedule was third. The survey found that unhappy employees are more likely to name a lack of career advancement more than feeling like they’re underpaid as the reason.   “Four in 10 workers give their companies a negative rating on how well they help their employees advance their careers,” said Jon Cohen, SurveyMonkey Chief Research Officer. If you’re unhappy, explore the options at your current employer.  🔹 Many companies have in-house training programs and/or pay for outside professional development.  🔹 Some employers offer tuition reimbursement for college or university courses. With major colleges and universities offering online degree programs, you may be able to earn a degree on your company’s dime.  🔹 Meet with your boss to discuss projects you’ve been working on and express your interest in career advancement. Ask about upcoming projects, particularly stretch assignments that will allow you to build your skills.  🔹 Talk to human resources to discuss professional development options, like a formal mentoring program. If not, take steps to find a mentor or, better yet, a sponsor who will advocate for you. If you’re serious about career advancement, you need to make sure people know who you are and what you’ve accomplished. As with most things in life, you need to take responsibility for your career.*The CNBC/SurveyMonkey online poll was conducted among a national sample of 8,664 professionals across industries. The data was weighted for age, race, sex, employment status, and geography. Subscribe to the Smarter Career Moves Podcast and Follow the Smarter Career Moves club on Clubhouse 👋

How To Modernize Your Stalled Job Search Today
Searching for a job through employment ads – once known as the want ads – used to be THE way to find a job. Today surfing job boards should only be one part of a multidimensional job search plan. In this session, you’ll learn 5 ways to modernize your job search. #1 Stop Relying On AdsCombing the job ads used to be the way you found a job. Today, searching employment ads and applying for jobs online should be only one part of your job-search strategy. #2 Target CompaniesCreate a list of employers you’d most like to work for. These are your target companies. Review their websites. Set up a Google alert for each organization so you’ll know whenever they are in the news. Follow them on social media. #3 Update Your EmailNothing screams outdated more than your old @aol email address. That goes for @yahoo email addresses too. Open an @gmail account to use for your job search. Updating your resume with this new email address will instantly make your resume and other career marketing documents look more current. #4 Prep for Virtual Interviews         Increasingly employers are using virtual emails, either phone or Skype, for initial rounds of interviews even for local candidates. While you’ll need to prep as you would for a face-to-face meeting, you’ll also need to plan where you’re going to take the call. #5 Use LinkedIn StrategicallyFill in that LinkedIn profile you halfheartedly put up a few years ago. Complete the Summary section, even if it’s brief. Fill in the job sections with more than a job title and employer. Robust, optimized LinkedIn profiles will get more attention and better results. Use the Status Update feature to share articles that might interest your connections. Join a few groups and start participating.Although many things have changed, others have not. People still prefer to hire people they know and like. So while you may be connecting with people on LinkedIn the way to grow your relationships is to take them offline. You may not be meeting an employer in person, but you still need to make a great impression. No need to throw out everything you learned. Just change things up a bit to incorporate the new.

How to Keep Your Job Search a Secret (So You Don't Get Fired)
While being employed makes you more attractive to many employers, looking for a job while working full time can be challenging. While I don't agree that finding a job is a full-time job, conducting a successful job search does take time and effort. One of the biggest challenges is making sure your boss doesn’t find out. If your boss finds out, there may be consequences. One of the candidates I worked with as a recruiter was fired because his boss found out he was looking. Luckily, I was able to place him with one of our clients. In this episode, I’ll share 3 techniques that will help you keep your job search confidential. #1 Dress A Little BetterIf you’re in looking for a job while employed you’re likely to be sneaking to interviews during your lunch hour or scheduling them for right after work. Whether you’re working from home or on site in a casual office changing from “work” clothes to a more formal “interview” outfit can be challenging. The easiest way to avoid red flags is to upgrade your wardrobe a month before starting your job search. Substitute slacks or casual skirts for jeans a couple of times a week. Wear a jacket now and then, keep one over the back of your chair.  Choose casual shoes instead of sneakers occasionally too. #2 Don’t Attract Attention On LinkedInBesides coming to the office in “interview” attire, a sure signal that you’re looking for a new job is a flurry of activity on your previously dormant LinkedIn profile. Now that you’re looking you need to add those missing job descriptions and add achievements. While you’re at it write a compelling About section too. Just make sure you keep this activity under the radar. Before you do anything, go to your “Privacy & Settings” page and “Turn off your activity broadcasts” under “Privacy Controls.”Listen to episode #3 Five Ways to Make Your LinkedIn Profile More Effective to learn how to develop a compelling LinkedIn profile. #3 Keep Your Job Search QuietFirst, NEVER use your company computer during your job search. Today, most employers monitor their employee’s activities, including reviewing their email accounts and checking their computers. Second, don’t share your plans. If you ask a friend to keep your secret, you’re asking them to bear a burden, maybe lie for you. They may let it slip. Or they may share it in confidence with someone else, who shares it with someone else, etc. Before you know it everyone knows you’re looking for a new job.Think carefully about what you post on social media. You never know who will see those posts complaining about your boss or your job or excitedly sharing news about your great job interview.  Make sure your boss is the first one you tell when you do find a new job. Don’t let them overhear others talking about it. Give notice and, if you can, help smooth the way for your replacement.  And try not to be too excited about leaving. Bragging about your new job to your colleagues can stir resentment. Careers are long, many people change jobs every few years, make sure you don’t burn bridges when you leave. You may need one or more of those you’re leaving behind for a reference.
