On October 31st, 2008, Halloween day, 16 year old high school student Annie McCann left a strange note on her bed, proclaiming she no longer felt suicidal, she loved life, and that she was ready to finally live. She then headed out in the family’s white Volvo, skipping school, and taking $1,000 of her savings with her. Her intended destination was unknown. Upon learning that their daughter never made it to school that day, Annie’s parents began frantically searching for her. Their search would tragically end two days later when a man found Annie’s body lying next to a trash bin behind the projects on Lombard Street in downtown Baltimore, Maryland, over 50 miles away from Annie’s Virginia home. With no known associates in the area, Annie’s parents were puzzled as to how she could have ended up so far away from home, and further confused by how Annie ended up so far away from her vehicle, that was later found parked at a gas station.  When Annie’s cause of death would finally be revealed, the mystery surrounding Annie’s death would deepen even further. What happened to Annie McCann? How did she end up dead behind a trash can, so far from home? Shortly before midnight on September 11th, 2001, roughly 15 hours after the tragic attack on the world trade center, 46 year old Polish immigrant, Henryk Siwiak, was fatally shot on the streets of a Brooklyn neighborhood in New York City. A day forever etched in the minds of the American people for its unimaginable loss of human life, Henryk’s murder would be the only non-terror related homicide in New York City on September 11th and for nearly 20 years it has gone unsolved. How did devoted family man Henryk Siwiak end up dead on the streets of Brooklyn? Was he the victim of a botched robbery? Or was his murder somehow related to the day’s shocking events? This is a Small Foreign Fact Check. In today’s episode we’ll be looking into the case of Henryk Siwiak: the last homicide of 9/11.

In June of 2007, 11 year old Haleigh Breann Culwell and her mother, 36 year old Kimberly Whitton were living in an isolated log cabin in rural northern Alabama with Kimberly’s husband of 8 years, Barry Whitton, when mother and daughter suddenly disappeared. According to Barry, he last saw Haleigh and Kimberly when they left their residence on June 21st, 2007 and left in a white van, taking $20,000 dollars of the couple’s money with them. Suspicion would quickly fall on Barry not only because he was the last one to see them, but also because a similarly tragic fate had befallen Barry’s previous wife years early. Did Haleigh and Kimberly willingly drive off in a van to vanish forever? Or is their husband and stepfather Barry actually behind their mysterious disappearance? And if so, was this actually the first time that Barry had made a wife disappear? This is a Small Foreign Fact Check.
