David is leaving Hawai'i! Why would someone leave paradise? Jen is happy that it's warm in New York. And we dive into the last episode of Under the Banner of Heaven, aptly titled Blood Atonement.
We discover that Dan and Ron were indeed behind the murders of Brenda and her baby; Prophet Onias decides to draw the line at a kill list; Detective Pyre is visibly upset that his Church is trying to get in the way of Justice and Detective Taba is removed from Apartment 4E because he's got a great lesson for Pyre to learn.
How did you all resonate with the series as a whole? What about religion did you learn? And how can this type of show speak to future TV makers?
Tune in, and let us know what we should lean into for Part Deux of Season 5. Shall we review a comedy or do something totally different altogether?

We are at the penultimate episode! (for real this time)
Brenda gets the go-ahead to "save" The Laffertys, a desire she had from the beginning. Ron had a same-sex experience with an FLDS member that confirms that he is confused about his place in the world sans wife, children and hope. We get to see more of so-called Prophet Onias, Brady and here come two new characters out of nowhere: Chip & Ricky.
Jen and David have opposing takes on the line - "If a revelation comes from God, it will cause an increase of love and appreciation, a sign that Satan cannot duplicate."
And we further discuss themes of placation, questioning faith, God v. church and acceptance.

We are at the penultimate episode (just kidding..It's not).
Ron seems to be the supervillain. Operative word: seems. Dan has turned into a true Mr. Nasty by trying to convince Matilda that her daughters should be his wives. ick! Detective Taba is still an odd addition to this story...until you read a little about the Paiute and Mormon history. The music still gives nothing, especially when Trader Joe - we mean - Traitor Joe Smith dies dramatically. And a few themes that have us chatting more than usual are the trust and distrust of women; what a husband will do when his back is against the wall; and the wrath of a mother.

They found Bishop Low! ... and he is not dead. That man is fishing.
Episode 4 of Under the Banner of Heaven, titled Church and State, shows us the internal struggle Detective Jeb Pyre has when he chooses his job over the demands of Church. It's revealed that Dan's defiance of man's law takes him down an FLDS path that puts his life and the life of his wife in danger. Ron was indeed upset by his own wife's writing of the letter to the President of the Church, denouncing anti-government sentiments. And Detective Taba is still useless.
Jen and David have a found a way to relate to all of these, as we're sure you have to. Get into the conversation, and let us know if you agree that Sam Worthington's acting needs to go in Apartment 4E.

David and Jen discuss episode 3 of FX's Under the Banner of Heaven.
This episode dives more into the distrust between Fundamentalist Mormons and the Government. And we get a look into the minds of someone, like Sam (Rory Culkin) who believes that he heard from God to destroy those on a "list."
David and Jen discuss whether Brenda and Erica were on the "list"; How this story attempts to be an authentic Mormon story without an outsider's gaze; the mediocrity of the show's music; How everyone has to serve someone; and other awesome realizations.
Also, what value has Detective Bill Taba brought to the show? We genuinely do not know...

Season 5 is here!
And what better way to start than to review a show - FX's Under the Banner Heaven, starring Andrew Garfield as a Mormon Detective (Jeb) investigating a double homicide - a Mormon wife (Brenda) and daughter (Erica). The suspects are all Mormons, making the Detective's job in some ways easy and other ways hard as he navigates his faith and the faith of those who may just be murderers.
In this season's inaugural episode, we discuss the first two episodes - When God Was Love and Rightful Place. David has a theory on who may have killed Brenda and Erica and suspects that the killers will use their belief in God to justify it.
And Jen offers her cult experience as a way to bring color and understanding to the two juxtaposed sides of Mormonism that tugs at Jeb and Allen, the husband of Brenda.
What do you think of the show so far? How are your own beliefs or non-beliefs informing your view of the show? And what from the show would you put in Apartment 4E?
P.S. Why is Andrew Garfield NOT in the Bond conversation?
