SHIFT HAPPENS
SHIFT HAPPENS
Claudia Mahler
In SHIFT HAPPENS, host Claudia Mahler is curious about how women made it through turning points in their lives, and how they reflect back on them. SHIFT HAPPENS creates a space for women to pause for a moment and to share, to listen and to feel heard. A space where we connect and talk about life and its pivotal moments. About the highs and lows, the challenges and the joys. About what has been gained, and about how enriching change can be. Some things we hear are heavy, some are funny; they all put me in awe, as they are honest and raw testimonies of life. Too often, women just get on with it — the everyday, the duties, the expectations. Too often, life-altering events are being swept under the rug, as the day must go on. This podcast is a little window into the world. I invited women from all walks of life, and various counties, countries, and continents. I am in conversation with authors, business owners, artists, life coaches, and change-makers in the areas of academia, wellness, the arts, HR, beauty. All these women have their individual life stories, and much wisdom to share. Lots to learn from all of them.

Why Starting A Charity Is A Good Thing with Gilly Norton
Gilly Norton founded SWV (Supporting Wounded Veterans) as a Charity more then 15 years ago. Soldiers returned from frontlines and were in acute need of pain management support, mentoring, employment support. Gilly and team went to work. They raised funds and organized a Skiing Week in the Swiss mountains, in the village of Klosters. SWV started pain clinics in the UK, worked with donors, other foundations, the government to increase the funding for clinical trials on PTSD and other necessary measures. Asked what the main challenges are: people are often declaring problems "too difficult to solve," but one needs to stick to it, be consistent, raise funds wherever possible and maintain the momentum through long development cycles. Gilly emphasizes the "magical atmosphere" created when people unite to genuinely change someone's life—"not often in a life you get the chance". Success requires believing in the mission and "keeping the faith" through setbacks

How To Practice "Sympathetic Happiness" With Helen Schulman
Today I am in conversation with Helen Schulman, an acclaimed novelist, screenwriter, short story writer and New York Times Bestselling author. We talk about the concept of "sympathetic happiness": Helen shares her impactful encounter with the Dalai Lama many years back. She stumbled upon him speaking giving a free audience publicly in Portland, and she listened to him for the first time. His topic was "sympathetic happiness" - the idea being that if you can join in the happiness of others, your own happiness will multiply. Helen internalised this learning in her practice as a professor, teaching writing at The New School in NYC. She says, that since then she has been not only happy for her students, but actually focussing on being happy through them. Helen talks about her new book "Fools for Love" and our conversation actually took place on the first day of her Sabbatical, which she will spend in Paris with her husband, working on historical fiction.

In today's episode, East-German born, New York based artist, Cornelia Thomsen shares her story of finding her way into becoming an artist. How To Become An Artist With Tanya Minhas
In my conversation with New York based, American-Pakistani artist, Tanya Minhas, we explore the invisible in art. Tanya shares her fascination for nature and the tiny moments, that inspire her thinking and her work. She shares the moment, that made it inevitable for her to commit fully to a life as an artist. It had to do with facing challenges, grief and searching for a language to be able to truly express herself and her emotions. As she quoted from a book she once read "Life is not all HiHi-HaHa". Tanya's Pakistani heritage strongly influences her work, particularly her current show on view at Winston Wächter Fine Art in New York City " A Tapestry of Dreams". How To Beat Ageism In ShowBiz One Laugh At A Time With Carole Montgomery
Today I am sitting down with life long stand up comedian Carole Montgomery. Carole is a classic in show biz, a Brooklynite through and through, she has performed all over the United States. Being a stand up comedian has been her fulltime job. Until she turned 50. Her environment signaled her silently but clearly, that her time is done, over, chapter closed. She shifted and worked as a producer, comedy teacher, and writer to stay connected in the business. At 59 she had a break through idea: Funny Women of A Certain Age. A stand up comedy show featuring older comedian women. With a talent pool of about 100 artists, Carole has been producing shows for the past ten years, TV channel SHOWTIME made three Comedy Specials with Funny Women of A Certain Age. Listen to a conversation about ageism, about how funny never gets old, and about facing the truth. Carole loves playing for younger audiences, she is not afraid, as they look at her as though she's Yoda. Anything is possible really. Nothing is a matter of age, but of spirit and choice.
