Shift Into Confidence
Hello! I’m sharing one of our most popular Shifts today. Tap the “Listen” button above to hear it. Or, choose your perfect Desktop Shift, iPhone Shift, or Android Shift anytime.Let’s shift into confidence.I’m recording in a busy park today. Please bear with the background sounds (if you’re listening). It will be worth it.This truly is so simple and straightforward.First of all, a lot of lack of confidence comes from some form of doubt about yourself. You think that you're kind of being a fraud somehow. But that's just this feeling that people get because we can't possibly know everything. We know that we have to make a lot of assumptions in life just to get by — and we know we don't know everything. Those factors (and others) can create a sense of uncertainty, potentially…. Until you remember that you’re a living miracle — you’re a perfect specimen. The way to come into physical, bodily, state awareness of that fact is to come into presence strategically. The way you do that — especially when it's about confidence — is to focus all your attention on listening.I know what you may be thinking…What about if I'm speaking? Why am I focusing all my attention on listening? Therein lies the magic of this suggestion. Put 100% of your attention into listening to your voice as you speak, and take deep breaths anytime you need to — people respect your deep breaths.Deep breaths are a sign of somebody who is taking sincerely what they're talking to you about. They're being authentic. They care. They're taking their time. So, whenever you need to take a little bit of emotional recharge, take a deep breath. Then, continue to assert your intention to listen with all your attention — whether you’re speaking, or someone is speaking to you, or there is silence between the words.Remember, there's silence constantly, even when you're speaking. When you come into that space of listening, you are authenticity. You are confidence.Confidence and authenticity are massively overlapping. So let's practice right now. Take a long deep breath. —By the way, this is one of the reasons why in the OnePerfect Shift app (iOS | Android | Enterprise) you are able to record your own insights anytime. You're always one tap away from being able to record your voice, because speaking your truth out loud, and listening to it, and hearing it, are all components of bringing yourself into authenticity. When you're in that place, life is good. You're having far fewer doubts and questions about yourself being good enough, or your ability to meet the fears and challenges that you encounter. You realize you're 100% worthy. So let's listen to life in silence together for a minute. Then, we'll finish up with one more thing.Ready?Listen.(If you’re listening to the audio right now, close your eyes and listen to life with 100% of your attention for a while. If you’re only reading this post, just listen to life in silence for as long as you choose, before you continue reading.)Just listen.—Keep listening. —It's a practice in confidence. It's a practice in authenticity.—Be totally intentional about your relationship to life — your willingness to listen to life.—Perfect. Now, I suggest you do a couple reps inside your mind's eye of seeing yourself succeeding in whatever it is that you're about to go do next. See yourself succeeding while knowing that people genuinely want you to succeed. That's what the people who matter to you want for you (i.e., the people who should matter to you — the people who care about you). They want you to succeed. So, know that you are supported. You are loved. And no matter what, there’s always tomorrow. So just be yourself.Be authentic. Be confident. See yourself succeeding now in your mind's eye.Feel that feeling of success in your body.——Perfect landing every time.Nice.Alright, have a great day.SeanP.S. Shift Through Being Annoyed With Someone
If the Shift below doesn’t resonate with you, choose your perfect Shift.Or, customize your Shifts and track your progress on iPhone or Android. In each Shift, we take a fresh look at our relationship to our own mind as we dive into presence to rejuvenate together.Subscribe to get new Shifts emailed to your inbox so you never miss a new Shift.Subscribers reply to emailed Shifts to share their thoughts with me anytime.Let's start with a small shift.Set an intention to shift into a more ideal state of mind over the next few minutes.Let's do that together. To set that intention really make your mind go there by saying to yourself:“I'm going to shift from where I am right now to a better place over the next few minutes.”——Is your intention to shift clearly set?Okay, good. Now, take a long deep breath.—Nice.Okay so you're annoyed with someone. This is painful.Interpersonal difficulty is painful. Interpersonal difficulty often has the effect of reducing our connection to what's most important to us.The associated emotions that come along with feeling annoyed with someone often produce a temporarily myopic point of view which translates into an unwanted mind state.Right? Being annoyed can disconnect you from the more deeply held beliefs that you’re usually more in touch with. That’s why now is the moment when you’re most in need of a Shift — a quick reminder that reinvigorates your connection to what every spiritual tradition tells you… Life is a miracle. Your life is a miracle.Your journey through life is an aspect of that miracle.Your spiritual journey is about navigating through your miracle. The inner journey that's occurring within you is part of the miracle. Difficult moments along your path are opportunities offered by the miracle to step forward on your path with integrity in this moment. So… this moment of being annoyed with someone is an opportunity to come back into touch with what you know is most true in your life. So, what's most true to you? What's most important to you in life?Let's lean into your truth — whatever you believe. Take 10 seconds to think about that question and notice what comes to mind. What's most true and important to you? —Be fully in the present moment by placing 100% of your attention to just listening to yourself.Listen to your thoughts for the answer to the question…What's most important to you?——Okay, good. Whatever you came up with, good start.Let's keep going slowly. Take another deep breath.—Release the tension in your body by relaxing your neck. —Allow your shoulders and your arms to fall toward the ground too.—Allow your hands, your arms, to relax completely.—How about another question? How do you want to remember yourself when you're looking back on your journey tomorrow — or when you look back from the end of your journey?Do you want to feel proud?Impressed? At peace?Picture what you want to feel like right now. —How do you want to feel looking back?—Bring that vision into a feeling state in your body now.—If you were most satisfied looking back on your life, how would you feel?—Got your answer?Good. Now ask yourself…How would that feeling inside you — that answer to what feeling proud of your life would look and feel like — how does that feeling and answer inform how you want to deal with the interpersonal struggle that you're going through today?Take a few seconds considering that question in silence. ——Observe how answering that question impacts how you feel — and how you want to cope — now that you're more connected to what's important to you. Doing that will give you some space from any annoyance you’re feeling.—Any ideas about how you might deal differently with your annoyance? How are you going to cope so that you respect your own decision?—Do you feel any better, knowing that answer? —How do you feel now? How's your mind and body state right now?—Well, stay present.Always reconnect to what's important to you — especially if the annoyance starts to return today.Okay, have a great day.Talk to you soon.SeanWant to share Shift with a friend?About the OnePerfect Shift appIt’s very personal. One big reason that the app is very personal is that you can add your own personally recorded insights into your own app Shifts so that your shifts become extremely targeted to your personal objectives. The app also tracks your progress and has lots of targeted multimedia Shifts and programs.Over 95% of surveyed app users report being able to shift effectively in 5-10 minutes. Shift To Full Presence
If the Shift below doesn’t resonate with you, choose your perfect Shift.Or, customize your Shifts and track your progress on iPhone or Android.Hello, hello! How are you?I'm looking forward to the next several minutes with you. A question frequently raised is ‘What is presence?’Presence is an experience. Let's have that experience together. Notice how you're feeling right now. —Now dedicate all your attention for the next few minutes to coming into complete presence with me.  Let’s have the experience that emerges when 100% of your attention is focused in the present moment.Doing that translates into an incredible feeling — presence, aliveness, connection, peace. Freedom from fear. Take a deep breath in.—And out.—Settle into this moment with me. —Listen to life with 100% of your attention.—Good.Now, invite all your attention to observing this moment, wherever you are. Feel all the sensations.—Notice your body pressing against whatever you're pressing against — a seat, the ground, a bed.—Feel every sensation.—Release any stories that are buzzing through your mind. Maybe 10% of your attention is focused on the past or thinking about the future. But right now, bring all your attention 100% right here.Listening.—Being.—Feeling.And knowing that by returning your attention to the present moment, you're strengthening your ability to shift into presence anytime you choose throughout your day.Notice how you feel right now, and just mark it.Notice how life is when you’re fully present. —Good. —Now let's set an intention to sink deeper into presence. —Can you feel your intention being set?—For 20 seconds or so, just look around your environment slowly. Notice details.Move your visual field around your environment. Stop and study objects if they appeal to you. Ready?Go.—Beautiful. Keep looking.  Study your environment.—You are deepening your presence.—Good. Coming into presence allows you to focus your attention wherever you want to focus it next. So let's shift our attention again. Now that we're more present, we can more easily notice that silent tingling of our bodies.Focus all your attention on your body now. Start by squeezing your left thumb hard for three seconds and then releasing it. Feel all the blood rushing into your thumb.—Squeeze your thumb hard again for a few seconds, and then release your thumb and feel the tingling again. Can you feel it? —Good. Focus on that sensation.Focus on that silent buzzing of your body, the buzzing of life in your body. Notice the feeling pulsating through your whole body at once now. ——Feel life energy flowing through your body. That energy is producing your experience of life in this moment. Feel fully present in your body. You can close your eyes anytime you want to.Just settle in.Let's do that for a short while together.Feel the buzzing.Feel that tingling aliveness.Ready?Go. ——Feel the buzzing of your body. Feel your life flowing into form each moment. Can you feel that? —That's presence. Do you notice a shift in how your mind and body feel compared to just a few minutes ago?The more you practice, the more contact you'll have with the creative peace that's buzzing through you all the time. Presence buzzes through you into your life — as your life — each moment. So live presently.Have an incredible day.SeanP.S. Shift When Life Is Difficult
If the Shift below doesn’t resonate with you, choose your perfect Shift. Or, customize your Shifts and track your progress on iPhone or Android anytime.Let's take a long deep breath.—Allow your shoulders to fall toward the ground. If you have something behind your neck, allow your head to fall backwards slightly. Just relax completely.—Come into this moment. —100% of our attention, right here.—Let’s just recognize that life is not easy. —It's not always easy for anyone. Please know that, if you're struggling. All of us have ups and downs. When we're down, we have a hard time finding our way back up sometimes. That's just because we forget that there's a pathway there.Maybe we need to practice a little bit to find our way back up consistently. The first step is recognizing there's a pathway, and the second is traveling it.Identifying what that pathway is for yourself is a part of your journey. But there are some principles, some basics of full attention in the present moment, that allow you to find your way to your right place — back to peace, and to feeling like you're able to take that next step in your journey — to feeling like it's not too hard. It's doable.Know that you're not alone. One way to do it is to take a deep breath.Come into this moment.100% of your attention here. Place all your attention in your body. Just feeling your body buzz for a little while. The genius of you.——Whether you feel like you love your body, or you don't love your body, if you keep going into your body you'll recognize that there's a buzzing genius within. There is a genius that buzzes trillions and trillions of cells that connect in trillions of ways every second, to produce your experience of life — to produce you. When you see that, you see how connected you are to the entire environment around you.The breath that comes into your oxygen. The nature that surrounds you.The chair that you're sitting on. And me, and everyone else. We all share the miracle. We all buzz at one on some level. So find that space inside you — where you’re buzzing as one with life.Feel the buzz.Let's feel the buzz for 30 seconds. And then we'll try something. All your attention — feeling your body.Close your eyes anytime you want to.———Mmm, it feels so good. Now let’s release our intention to focus on the body, and just be. Release the intention to have any intention for a while, and allow yourself to be with me.No intention. Just be.——————Are you being?Come into being. Let everything go.———And now, listen from a place of full presence to hear the next step on your journey.See what's next for you.———Perfect.Have an incredible day.SeanP.S. Shift Into A Breakthrough
Customize your shifting experience on iPhone or Android anytime.Hello there! Hope you’re doing well.Let's set an intention together to make a shift into a different state of mind. We’ll take a deep dive into our inner worlds to honor our practice of being intentional about coming deeply into presence, at least once for the day.It doesn’t need to take a long time to do that. It’s so valuable. We'll do it today by shifting into a breakthrough.I discovered years ago in my own shifting practice, and then while working with people to get their own practice going, that a real breakthrough in your practice — and in your life actually — comes when you're able to shift intentionally between your thinking mind and your watching and listening mind. Your ‘thinking mind’ to your ‘listening mind.’ When you can do that reliably it means that you clearly know the felt difference — the difference in how it feels to you — between those two states of consciousness. So let's experience this breakthrough intentionally together right now.Take a deep breath.—Relax.Settle into your space.—Focus 100% of your attention — invite all your focus into the present moment, into the space you're sitting.Get all your senses attuned to right here and right now.Let everything go.Let go of any thoughts that you brought with you, or any thoughts about the future, just let them go for a few minutes here.Close your eyes if you want. And listen inside your inner world.—See if you can notice any thoughts that are popping through now.—What thought is occurring in your mind right now when you just listen?—When I’m speaking, you may be processing the words I speak. And meanwhile, you're also likely thinking about something — maybe peripherally related, or even completely unrelated to these words. Can you identify any thought that you're processing?——Noticing your ‘thinking state of mind’ (as we are doing) is a great way to start coming into a ‘listening state of mind.’Let’s do that. Close your eyes now, if you haven’t already.See if you can notice ongoing thoughts produced by your thinking mind for the next 20 seconds or so.When you notice a thought, don't get carried away by the thought.Observe the thought.Allow it to flow through your mind. Allow it to leave your mind. Then, just return to the intention of noticing your next thought.Ready?Go.——Good. Did you notice any thoughts arising in your mind — in your inner world? I'm sure you did.Now we're going to make our shift.Set an intention to shift away from your thinking mind that you were observing, and completely into your non-thinking mind over the next couple minutes. Shift away from your thinking mind and into your non-thinking mind. Making that shift entails being committed to letting go of your thoughts completely for a while. Don't worry, they'll be there when you return. They always are.But for now, just be committed to allowing your thoughts to fade out of the foreground of your awareness for a little while.Let's set a clear intention to let thoughts go for 20 seconds. Drop below thinking into complete inner silence.—Just listening.—Just being.— Dropping into complete silence now.Complete inner silence.——Listen to life.Listen as life.——Perfect.Did you experience a few seconds of pure silence — pure listening mind? Can you feel that difference between being occupied by your thinking mind, versus how it feels to become your watching mind, your listening mind, your silence? That's the breakthrough you want to focus on.Notice which state you're in at each moment. When you can move back and forth intentionally, you've had your breakthrough. You'll come to more clearly identify and feel that difference as you practice shifting more — the difference between your thinking mind and your listening mind.Being able to make that intentional shift when you want to is the most important skill you can develop.Once you’re in your listening mind you can move your attention into anything you want to just by resetting your intention. So, what do you want to do next? You’ve refilled from a place of stillness, a place of silence, a place of listening to life as life. Now, set your next intention focused on whatever is up next for you today. So what is next for you today?—Set that intention to shift towards whatever is next for you now.Can you feel your intention being set inside you?—It can help to actually see the next part of your day in your mind’s eye.See yourself fully present, embodying your next intention for today.—Got it?Good! Have an incredible day.Stay present,Sean^^ If you enjoyed this post, feel free to share and subscribe to receive new Shifts by email. ^^ The OnePerfect Shift app is free if your employer, school, or other organization subscribes.Contact us for a team trial — or try it anytime on iPhone or Android. Shift Into Freedom
Hello, hello.Let's take a long, deep breath. —Settle into this moment intentionally and strategically by setting a clear intention to shift deeper into presence for a while. —Feel that intention being set inside you.—Let’s feel presence flowing through us now by listening to the sounds of life for 10 seconds.Listen with all your attention.—Perfect.After shifting into the present moment on demand becomes a habit for you, you won’t need to set your intention to live in presence as frequently because living presently will increasingly become your default state of mind and body. That’s a big deal because living in presence feels like freedom. Can you feel a shift has occurred within you already today?Let’s listen to life and feel for freedom for another 10 seconds.—Nice.Coming deeper into presence.Feel the air on your skin now. Feel the air against your skin.—Settle into your seat even further, if you're sitting down.Allow your shoulders to relax — and your head to fall backwards.Get fully comfortable.—Just feeling and being for now. —Trusting life.—Know that you’re loved by life. Two of my favorite lines — Love life. It loves you back. It's true. Loving life allows life to love you back. Roger Federer Retirement Shift
Let’s take a long, deep breath.—I woke up to the news that Roger Federer is retiring today. What a run. What a gift he's been to all of us. He ushered back in an era where you could be friends with your opponent — where you could honor your opponent.Where you valued the work that they put in.Where you knew that if you played at the top of your game against the best in the world, you were doing it just to give yourself a chance at winning, Roger used to say. You worked all year round, all day, to give yourself a chance at winning. And when it came to the match, you were able to put everything out of your head — animosity, any negativity — and play at the peak of your powers. And still, with all of that you just put yourself in a position to win — to give yourself a chance to win. And if you didn't win, you still succeeded. That's what I love about Roger Federer — he is all about the present moment. In a lot of ways, what he did was usher back in a previous generation of tennis. The Australians of old who my dad would tell me about. There was Rod Laver and Ken Rosewall. This was when tennis was amateur, turning professional eventually. And so they would travel around together as buddies. They would practice together. The tournaments were smaller so they would play against each other a lot. They were building something together. We saw the same thing happen on the women's side. Women's tennis wasn't as big — there weren't as many players, but the passion was there. And they got together. A handful of them, led by Billie Jean King, of course. Eight of them would travel to tournaments, and they would play together. They became great friends. They respected and honored each other.I've never seen in my lifetime that tradition honored — what tennis really is — it’s community at root, it's putting forward your best, it's competing as hard as you can to give yourself that chance to win. And when you win, there's nothing better. You're the only one standing after this tournament whittled everyone down.I always say that tennis is a painful sport. After the first day of the tournament, half of the people go home. Half the people have lost. After the second day of the tournament you've gone down from 32 players to 8 players, so only a quarter are left. It's really a difficult sport. You need that camaraderie. You need that friendship. If you lose on the first day, you have a whole week until the next tournament. You need to put your head down and keep training.Keep that vision intact. And somehow convince yourself that next week will be a better day. Tomorrow will be a better day. Federer lived that in front of us for decades, in spades. He brought the sport to a new level — an entirely new pedestal. And those who came after him have carried that mantle. We’ll miss him from the sport. I'm sure he'll be with us for a long time in whatever capacity he continues in.Let's shift together.Give ourselves a chance of being present in this moment. Inspired by Roger Federer.Another deep breath.—Close your eyes with me, if you want to.Relax into the space that you're sitting in.—And just be here.Feeling life.—Connecting to life.—What do you feel?I feel gratitude for the decades of Roger Federer tennis that we got to witness.Thank you, Roger.Thank you for being such a big part of my life, and tennis life, and now what has turned into the life of the whole world.—Let’s sit in silence together for a few seconds. Just be.Listening.Feeling.Letting everything else go.———Perfect. Can you notice how your body changed? Do you feel recharged for the day? Do you feel inspired by the bar that Roger Federer set for being a human, for being a tennis player, for living a life?Great job. Have a great day. I'll talk to you soon. Stay present,SeanP.S. Shift To Saying No
Hello, hello. How are you? How's your day going? Let's take a long deep breath.——I'm looking at some beautiful flowers.Bring 100% of your attention to looking at something — giving it all your attention.Let your love flow through you into that object. It's easier if it's something beautiful like a sunflower, which is what I'm looking at. But you can send your love into anything with all your attention. So just study anything — notice it with attention in ways you've never noticed it before. That's a way of giving love to it, right? That in itself. Notice how you shift a little bit as you study or interact with your object.Doing that brings you into the present moment. I’ve been noticing lately how a real challenge of life is to learn to consistently say “No” to a lot of things — but, also to say “Yes” to the right things. When you don't say “No” to a lot of things, your life ends up becoming overly filled. We naturally want to say “Yes” to life. So, we have a vulnerability in the direction of saying “Yes” to too many things. But then, what do you say “Yes” to? How do you make decisions about what you say “Yes” to?The better you get at solving that challenge for yourself, the more you're able to walk your own path — the more the journey feels right, feels purposeful, feels like the life you were meant to live. For me, connecting to presence as a priority is the way that those “yeses” and “noes” get answered most effectively. Part of that means coming into silence very consistently and listening for what feels right, and what doesn't feel right. What feels like too much chaos? What feels like the next step along your path?Take another deep breath. ——Depending on which words you use and how you think about life — “presence” very much overlaps with love.Presence is life. And love flows through life. So getting connected to presence enables you to feel connected to love. So… another way to make those decisions about what you let into your life is by asking: Is it growing love? Or, is it not growing love? Does saying “Yes” feel right when you're present? When your attention is fully here, you're not distracted by thought after thought, or stress after stress going through your head. You're able to sit, and feel, and be, and notice what feels right — so you can live your life very deeply from that place — and not be distracted from your life. So, of course, that's why we shift into presence so consistently. Let's do that together and feel for what feels right, right now. Listen with me. I'll step outside. Let’s listen to waves for a minute together as we feel. With all our attention just being here.——Notice if you get distracted. And let whatever it is that distracts you — that flows through your mind — to just keep flowing out of your mind until you come into full quiet. —Listen to life go by for 30 seconds or so.———Alright, perfect. How do you feel? Are you feeling like saying “Yes” to this moment?I feel so grateful today. I’m grateful to be able to drop in a presence and feel life flow through me. Feel the meaning, the purpose that is associated with that experience of walking your personal path with as much full attention as you're able to in every moment. Take one more long deep breath. —Have a great day. I'll talk to you soon.Stay present.Sean* OnePerfect iPhone* OnePerfect Android* OnePerfect Team This is a public episode. Shift Unhappiness
Did you know that ‘unhappiness’ has increased worldwide by over 43% between 2007 and 2021?Source: Gallup 2022Let’s Shift Unhappiness together. That seems to be the call of our era.So let’s take a long deep breath.—Bring 100% of your attention into the present moment by listening to the life occurring around you for a few seconds right now. —Feel your body shifting into a deeper connection with this moment, as you listen.—Feel that?—Twenty five years in psychology has taught me that most people are capable of learning how to strategically shift their state of mind when they choose to.OnePerfect has been measuring that observation for years now. It turns out that shifting how you feel in a few minutes is not that difficult to do for most people completing Shifts.Over 95% of post-Shift surveys confirm that the person shifted toward or into their desired state of mind while completing the Shift. That’s important news right now because shifting your state of mind strategically can help alleviate each of the 5 components of ‘unhappiness’ that Gallop measures and reports on —* Sadness* Stress* Anger* Worry * Physical painWe’ve found that the most difficult part of shifting is simply getting yourself to recognize that you need to begin shifting your state in the moments when you really need to.Shifts help you address that challenge too because completing Shifts develop the self-awareness that is necessary to identify those moments when you need to shift yourself into a better state — so you can take action.Developing that skill requires repetition of practice which is why I focus on delivering enjoyable Shifts to subscriber’s inboxes. Thankfully, people are loving Shifts. I suspect that’s because the Shift community is purpose-focused. A large portion of the worldwide increase in unhappiness is related to a decline in people feeling a sense of life purpose. So we prioritize shifting into peace, presence and flow because those mind-body states cultivate an implicit sense of personal meaning. Feeling connected to your life amplifies your sense of connection to others which nourishes foundational aspect of yourself. That’s what I love most about shifting. Subscribe now to get new Shifts delivered to your inbox every week.Shifts take you beyond happiness. Feeling supported, valued and loved are feelings most of us need in order to feel consistently at peace. And feeling at peace helps connect you to meaning and purpose. That’s why ‘shifting’ includes becoming aware of what's occurring not only in your outside world, but also in your inner world — the world that exists inside your brain and body. Your inner world is the world through which your thoughts and intuitions — and all those things that trigger you out of presence — flow.Observing your inner world requires dropping into presence. You need to create some space inside yourself (some presence) in order to listen and see what's occurring within. When you do that you start to see some patterns playing out in your inner world. When you listen to your inner world closely you see a world of relationships being maintained within you in every moment — a moving world. Your history of relationships is accessible when you become present to your inner world too.The more often you shift into presence, the more clear your inner world can become to you. When you see your inner world clearly, you can influence so much more of your life experience.Perhaps most important though is that completing Shifts makes it easier to navigate yourself into a better state of mind and body in those moments when you really need to shift.Shifting always starts with attending all your attention in this moment. So let’s take a long deep breath.—Again, bring 100% of your attention into the present moment. —Focusing your attention again on listening to life.—Listen to the sounds you otherwise would not hear for 10 seconds.—Notice the subtle change that occurs in your inner world as you focus all your attention on listening to life. —Feel that?I feel it. Shift Your Worst Triggers
Hello. How are you? —Are you feeling present?—Is 100% of your attention focused right here, right now?—Let's take a long deep breath together. —Come fully into this moment with intention. —Listening to life. —All of our attention right here. —Notice how you feel right now. —Now take 5 seconds to invite your attention 100% to listen to the present moment. Ready? Listen.—Good.Can you pick up a difference in how you feel after 5 seconds of intentional listening? —I notice a difference inside my body.As you consistently do little exercises like that you develop a more nuanced capacity to notice the difference in how where you place your attention impacts how you feel.It all happens fast. When you grasp how tight the relationship is between where your attention is and how you feel it helps with all sorts of choices that you make about how you place your attention throughout the day. Getting clear about the relationship between where your attention is and how you feel shapes where you place your attention and why you place your attention as you do.Let’s take another deep breath.—You’ll often notice yourself experiencing a ‘negative shift’ — characterized by a felt deviation from peace — as you get pulled away from your awareness that you can ride the wave of presence even when challenging ‘things’ happen. Negative shift = losing your connection to peace or presence. We often characterize the challenging ‘things’ that provoke our negative shifts into a bucket that we call ‘stress.’ But if you notice your inner experience in the moments when stress is arising you can dial in on what produced your negative shift — which helps you avoid repeating the same negative shift in the future. You’ll notice that your negative shifts typically begin when you start thinking about something that upsets you. It could be a family member. It could be someone close to you who you’re having conflict with.It could be your issues with health. It could be your issues with work.It could be your issues with money. It could be the re-emergence of your historical view of yourself as flawed somehow.Or maybe you’re reminded that your view of the future is not what you want it to be.Thoughts come into your mind and change your physiology immediately. Your worst triggers always increase your stress levels and usually create negative shifts. What’s your worst trigger?—Notice what arises as you pose that question in your inner world. What’s your worst trigger?—What shifts you negatively most often?——Good. It’s a good exercise just to pose the question and notice what arises. The reason I'm going into detail about all this is that the more you can recognize those very specific negative thoughts that occur — your worst triggers — the better off you’ll be. Consistently noticing the first thought that shifts you out of connection with the present moment is an incredibly powerful practice. When you notice the trigger, rather than being shifted negatively you can instead be triggered to think to yourself, “Oh yeah, I have to deal with that. That's negative. That could spiral me. That’s going to separate me from living in presence.” Noticing triggers in real time is part of the nuance I referred to at the beginning of today’s Shift. When you can notice that nuance in real time, you can shift away from it. It might well be that you have something that you need to deal with and you can notice that as you notice the trigger. But if you recognize the trigger consciously, instead of experiencing an immediate negative shift, you're reminded to make an intentional positive shift. Then you can deal with whatever you need to deal with from a feeling of presence. You don't need to go on an unpleasant emotional ride first. Notice the trigger event, make a note to yourself if you need to do something, and then reinforce your intention to remain fully connected to life at this moment. When you consistently address your life challenges that way, the way you end up addressing issues is much less likely to encourage the issue to repeat in the future with the same intensity. That's the power of living (and coping) from presence throughout your life. Let's take a long deep breath. —Come into the present moment. —Feel the inner change — notice it again. —Notice how your body changes after listening to ideas for a while and then shifting by listening to life for a little while. ———Do you notice the difference? For most of us, it's a lot easier to notice when other people get triggered. You might say to yourself, “Oh, that person is having a hard time today because they always lose their connection with their peace when x, y, or z happens”. You intuit that life is beating them down and they've succumbed to a negative shift based on some trigger that arose inside them. The closer you are to the person the better you may recognize their patterns — and the more obvious their triggers may be to you. However, real personal growth and development comes when you notice those things about yourself AND THEN you shift in real time. Shifts are super valuable to complete because they improve your ability to notice your worst triggers. In future Shifts, you’ll strategically provoke your most persistent triggers and then practice dealing with them (i.e., shifting) in real time. For today, let's take 30 more seconds quietly in presence. Listen for 30 seconds and then we'll intend presence for the rest of today. Ready? Listen.——Listen to and hear all those sounds that you wouldn't otherwise notice if you didn’t set that intention.—Purrrfect. All right, have an incredible day being fully present.Set that intention now — an intention to shift whenever you need to for the rest of your day. Notice when your presence is threatened by anything that could produce a negative shift. You do that just by noticing your triggers in real time to bring them into conscious awareness. If you happen to miss noticing your trigger, shift back into presence anytime you notice you’ve disconnected from presence.Okay?Did you set your intention to shift whenever you need to for the rest of today?—Feel the intention settling inside your body.—Nice!Nice Shift.Have a present day.SeanPersonalize a Shift.iPhone | AndroidShift your team.Request a team trial.
