The Founders observed and insisted on the natural rights of Americans, existent beyond the scope of government and meant to protect the individual from government and society alike. The Progressive Era saw a massive turn away from civil rights and towards government-sponsored, subjective privilege. This process began much earlier with claims made by leading Democrats that slavery was the right of the white, Southern man.
