One of a number of pro-slavery Democrats belonging to the infamous Fire-Eaters, Fitzhugh argued that institutionalized slavery was the solution to the social problems presented by Socialists. Alongside the Left Hegelianism and Babeufism already present and growing in the Democratic Party, Fitzhugh incorporated socialism as the best form of slavery.
