In today’s episode, we are exploring the last model prayer of Jesus in John 17:1-26. This prayer, commonly called the high priestly prayer, is Jesus’ own prayer to the father. This prayer shows Jesus lifting his disciples and also allows us to see who Christ really is and his concerns. Let us explore what we can learn from this prayer. The scriptural text used is Matthew 10:24-31. In this sermon, I unpack, just as the Gospel of Matthew does, the words of Jesus on what it means to be a disciple in the face of persecution or conflict and provides assurance of God’s love. The sermon is stratified into two major sections, namely:  1) Do not ignore persecution (vs. 24-25). 2) Do not fear the persecution of men, but only God (vs. 26-31). This episode of Jesus’ prayer at Gethsemane is part of a series exploring the various major prayers Jesus prayed while on earth and their implication to us as believers. This particular episode which is found in Matthew 26:37-44 teaches us to pray specifically when we feel tried and tested.
