What am I missing
I'm not sure what it is that attracts authors, or other interviewees to this podcast. Not sure if it's the association with the website, or some dark dealings with the devil, but man this guy is bad. The 'host' constantly is attempting to schlock his own mediocre work and his struggles to get published to established authors (spoiler, it gets him nowhere). There are more awkward pauses and corny corny jokes that even the most socially awkward fanboys would cringe at.
The worst part though is that the guys scores some great interviews. The bad side of that though, is that the guy doesn't even attempt to become familiar with the work that the author in question is representing. Half the podcast is the 'host' attempting to familiarize himself with what the hell is going on, rarely leading to any type of enlightenment.
Tldr; not a good show. awkward host. doesn't even have the most basic grasp of the genre or subculture

A podcast with fingers on the pulse of the genre
Science Fiction and fantasy are a huge genre that, even for the most dedicated fan, can be difficult to navigate. How do you know what is happening? How can you find out about interesting books, personalities and ideas in the world of fantasy and science fiction?
Sf Signal is invaluable in this regard and is really two podcasts in one.
One set of podcasts are interviews with writers, both up and coming and long established, publishers, editors and other SF personalities.
The other set, their panel discussions, take on topics of interest to genre fans, ranging from Doctor Who, to the last SF book that blew their mind away.
Together, SF Signal is a valuable signpost for any SF reader in our wild and wooly genre jungle.

Get to know SF personally
This podcast is a laid back, chatty, behind the scenes look at the speculative fiction genre. The SFSignal blog is fantastic, with lots of contributors and information and the Twitter feed gives up to the minute updates on happenings in the world of SF.
On the podcast they review books and ideas, talk to authors, have discussion panels etc. It is a great way to get to know the personalities behind some of the books you read. But talk is not limited to books. They also talk about movies, TV shows and comic books. Powered by the "functional nerds," listening to this podcast is like sitting around with a bunch of friends talking about speculative fiction, with the added bonus that sometimes the authors are there too.
