All of this is true:
::I give a 15-minute soliloquy confronting the critiques of corporate mindfulness training as some sort of initiative to "pacify" employees.
::Finally, at long last, I introduce Catherine Sherlock who has her own very interesting critiques of corporate mindfulness training. She describes the "against-the-grain" approach she offers leaders, groups and individuals through her company Higher Mindfulness.
::Catherine defines mindfulness and discusses the limitations of how it is taught to organizations today.
::Mindfulness is not quantitative: it's not about being aware of a higher amount of stuff, but of stuff of higher importance.
::Different meditations produce different brain states and Catherine teaches people to choose the right meditation and mindfulness program for their individual life goals.
::Self-compassion is crucial, especially during the early phases of mindfulness practice: break "I need good at this or I beat myself up” conditioning.
::It is very powerful to regularly ask yourself, "Where in my life am I not being a leader?"
::Break “prove yourself” conditioning and you can truly lead.
::Real inner power looks like comfort in the world and your place in it.
::Having a sense of belonging must be internal as well as external.
::One-off trainings are weighed against teaching leaders who can then help their organization weave it into their culture.
::Emotional intelligence requires that you know when you’re handling emotions properly, and when you’re being overly repressed or tolerant in order to feel like you’re “in control of yourself.
::You can deal with workplace bullying without being contentious and obsessive...sometimes this involves knowing you can't deal with it at all.
