Excellent Reporting
This is a really well done podcast. I intensely disliked the music. I found it so obnoxious and it really ruins the whole mood of the story. Just awful string noise. Everything else is perfect and I really admire the reporting. You can tell it was very well researched and professionally done. Now, can we take a moment to appreciate the degree of despicable in that bag of wet socks known as Orrrrrrlando Salinas? I had a visceral reaction to him from the moment he uttered his name. I looked him up to read about those charges, and what do ya know?! He looks just as repulsive as he sounds! 😂

Refreshing to hear all sides
I’m not old by any standards, 38 years old. Growing up people were homophobic, racist and sexist. I love that the new generation isn’t standing for it. Speaking out about injustices is one of the ways we can combat these unacceptable behaviors. Letting other people know that we’ll no longer stand for it, is a step in the right direction. Also, drug addiction is a disease that effects every one. This case has nothing to do with drugs. This Mother was in recovery, receiving and completely complying with everything being asked of her. There are addicts that do completely recover and walk among you everyday. And let’s not convict someone for child neglect because of marijuana use, lol. You’d be convicting a lot of parents and besides this mother’s UA test wasn’t positive for illicit drugs!!! Sigh. 🤦🏻‍♀️

FREAKY TRUE STORIES!
Thank you for looking at the bigger picture
As a former newspaper reporter, I am proud of the job y’all did telling this story. As someone who believes in the dignity of all people, I am thankful for you shining a light on how stereotypes about socioeconomic status and addiction impacted this case. It was also important to emphasize the role of trauma in Ashley’s life. I don’t believe people with money would have been pilloried in the same way. Judge not, lest ye be judged. And any parent who says they never ever looked away for a second only to realize tragedy could have struck is just not being truthful.

Well done
Well done Jacob and Robby for covering such a tragedy with grace. Hard to say I enjoyed the podcast due to the topic, but it was very well done. It’s important to tell difficult stories like this. Thank you for you professionalism.

Worth a listen!!!!
Really well done. Strong reporting. And a really important story. I am an addiction specialist and counselor working for a program much like the one the doctor in this podcast mentions. It is so important to shine a light on the gross misunderstanding and ignorance related to addiction, particularly when it come to mothers and pregnancy. Facts and knowledge before judgement people!!!! In episode 7 they let those idiot prosecutors talk to much!! They were CLEARLY biased! I hope Ashley and Paul are doing ok and that they know that any parent who says they never made any mistakes is a f’n liar. We all screw up from time to time. I know they must live with so much guilt.

Retrospect..
As a high school student in Pulaski County at the time of Noah’s death, I vividly recall the wide range of emotions that tore through our town. I, myself, believed that Noah was drugged or was killed before being placed into the septic tank, simply because I saw everyyything that people were posting on Facebook, and never heard any of the other facts. Going into this podcast I still had my firm beliefs. Listening to this five years later, however, my perspective has changed entirely and I wish that more people from the New River Valley would listen to this podcast. This tells the story much more effectively!

Not great
The podcast is good overall but there is no discussion of alternate possibilities. I appreciate the inclusion of court testimonies and other recordings as they tell the story well from the mouths of people involved but the podcast almost exclusively decides that this was not a crime and that Ashley nor her father had anything to do with it. The intro states that it was an accident and she was wrongly accused when this is not known for a fact. It also does not allow the listener to come to this conclusion on their own. It is possible that there are other possibilities and If Ashley did do it what were the circumstances leading up to it? Could it have been someone else? These questions are never entertained. Additionally, including erroneous facts like the one that accidents including septic tanks do occur, to prove that this was the most likely outcome does not show anything, especially when the data shows that these occurrences happen 3-5 times a year. The fact that this podcast does not entertain any other possibilities as to what happened discredits it’s entire stance.

Good listen
Good listen, but ughh these violins!! Like cats crying. Absolutely the worst choice for background music.

Terrible accident
Just finished the podcast, what a horrible accident, it is certainly thought provoking and makes for great discussion. I was just on Facebook (what did I just watch) and it so happened a video popped up that showed a child and mom walking along a path next to the road, the kid walked on a sewer/manhole and just like in the pod cast, the child fell in and the lid flipped closed.

Every mom’s nightmare
This is a tragic story that shines light on the inconsistencies of our justice system. Had Ashley White been a woman of better circumstances and means- the outcome would have panned out much differently.

Very well done! A real tragedy

Interesting story, BORING presentation
I was very interested in this case, but the way all of the information is presented was SO boring. The clips of tv shows or personal interviews presented were always way too long; would have done good with some commentary from the hosts within the clips presented, maybe it would have kept it more interesting. The focus of this podcast was very much in the socioeconomic status of the town rather than facts of the case or court proceedings. And that violin nonsense is TERRIBLE. I have no idea why anyone thought highly dissonant notes played on violins were a good background music idea. Had to skip through portions with this in it; it was way too distracting.

Good idea...not a fan of the execution
I don’t love this or hate this...I listed to half the episodes and wasn’t invested enough to even finish the last one I listened to. I felt for the family and the tragedy and feel the creators are doing a good job of shining the light on something that needs to be seen, understood, and explored. Two stars for a good effort.

Great story!!
This was such a great podcast! This story is one that more people need to hear because it will challenge your preconceptions, as it did mine. Very thorough reporting and great storytelling.

I had no idea what I was getting into. But I’m so glad I happened upon this story. Highly recommend

Binge-worthy and devastating
This thoughtful and compassionate account of the death of a child and the mistakes of his parents will make you question your perception of addicts and those “below” our social caste. Heartbreaking and honest, neither excusing the choices of the parents involved nor condemning them.
TrueCrimerino
Forever Judged
Unfortunately, people are quick to judge without knowing all of, or even most of the facts of every story. In this instance I felt for the family, the horrible judgment imposed on them from their past. Because of this they no longer get to see their children and will never have a “normal” again. May Ashley and her family find peace in this judgmental world. I hope she can smile again. 💔💔💔

A ‘Must Listen’ podcast!
To really grasp the truth about addiction and recovery as well as the implications on society and individual persons, listen to this podcast. To truly understand Ashley and her loss as well as how it is unrelated to her recovery from addiction, listen to this podcast. It’s an extremely fair and unbiased look into this tragic case. Kudos for TRUE fair and balanced investigative journalism! If you like Counterclock, Bear Brook, Missing Alissa, etc. you’ll love this podcast, even though it’s not ‘true crime’.

Glad I found this
I have to admit I would have and have been that judgy person due to media influence. After listening to this side of a story I feel bad for acting/feeling the way I have in the past. I’m not done listening yet but I’m hoping the outcome of the trial is in Ashley’s favor.

Story is okay REALLY BAD MUSIC
I wouldn’t have written this if it was this bad but the music is unbearable I can’t listen to it. Sounds like sawing wood. Why did they choose this awfulness???

Hindsight is 20/20
I really liked this podcast and how it was done. I remembered watching Nancy grace and hearing about this story, and thinking what a horrible person this woman was. Listening to this, my heart breaks for this mother. I wonder if Nancy grace ever goes back and looks at all the nasty stuff she has said about innocent people and apologized. This woman deserves an apology. Thank you for making this and telling the Actual Details.

My favorite podcast.
I have yet to find another series on podcast that is as intriguing and well spoken as this one is. It makes you question your opinions on child care and how much control a parent really has. Definitely my favorite nonfictional story podcast I’ve ever listened to.
woowwheaton
Fails to answer most pressing question
Paints mother very sympathetically without presenting the other side and fails to answer most pressing question convincingly. Says a broken lid which wasn’t attached or functioning properly resealed itself. How about testing that theory? Graces over the suboxone issue. Probably did pass out after she took it and probably had to that often. This is common. What choice would they have for care of the kids while she was taking her drugs? They argue she cleaned her trailer regularly, but there was marijuana leaves from a grow operation that hadn’t been around for years according to her. Seems a bit sus. Tragic, but not sure she wasn’t accurately charged. Feel sorry for kids born into these circumstances. I don’t think there is any winning in these cases. Parents were both struggling with their self imposed reality that put them in over their head. These reporters obviously feel it was a witch hunt and I don’t think they quite make the case.

Great Podcast
I binged this in one day it was so riveting. This is an example of what solid journalism is. This shines a light on our quick to judge culture which brings out the pitchforks and torches, along with media sensationalism and “some say” sourcing. I didn’t know this story and I’m glad I found it here so I can make up my own mind. Please come back with another story for a season 2!

Sound quality awful
The podcast begins with a recorded conversation over a lousy cell phone, and is narrated by a person who I’m sure is Earnest and spent much time doing the research, but might have benefited from some voice training. Maybe it’s me and others would differ but I just could not continue listening.

Background “noise”
I enjoy the story, great job! The background noises / sound add-in (scrolling, etc.) are distracting.

Insightful & honest
As a resident of Roanoke I must confess I was ready to convict without hearing evidence ~ rumors & even news led us into the conclusion they wanted to sell ~ this podcast righted the wrong & I highly recommend this podcast

Sad story, well explored
I was not familiar with the story of Noah’s death before the podcast. And yes, I made a judgment about what happened based on what I heard. Heart wrenching loss for family and community. The not-too-subtle classism that fueled the fire is an ugly side of us (here in this country) that we like to pretend isn’t so bad ... but yeah, it is. I hope that Ashley and Paul have their little girl home soon. I’m glad I listened to this story and hope this team will do more.

Shines a light on a terrible accident
I appreciate the reporters making this podcast to rectify their agencies error. The most commendable portion is near the end when they interview a man who experienced the exact situation that occurred with Noah and factual statistics involving septic tanks. The prosecutors are typical holier than thou jerks that pass judgement on others.

Judgmental
Overall, I enjoyed this podcast. However there is an air of misogynistic thinking which shows in the hosts assumptions of what motherhood is like. Considering they are men, and not even parents, it is especially offensive to someone who is raising a child as a single parent.

I really wanted to like this podcast but found it rather boring. It's a very sad story but I didn't get hooked. I listened to almost all of it (stopped half way through the last episode) hoping with each episode I would like it more. It was produced nicely and I enjoyed the narration. I am obviously in the minority because it has great reviews. It just wasn't for me.
RoggieD
Plods - not a good use of time.
There was too much testimony, the lawyer interviews tended to drone and it was average storytelling. Ending is given away at the beginning and not a lot of interesting details along the way.

Things that need to be said
I'm only on the second episode, but I heard more real compassion for the human plight so far that even if the rest of the story isn't told, the message is beautiful and worth hearing. Thank you!

This was very interesting and very well done. As a result, in the future, I plan to be very careful about assumptions. I will look for the facts.

Your bias is showing. Otherwise, this podcast has potential. Well done with the research, reporting and overall story telling.

Finally!
This podcast is excellent.. for several reasons, but the main reason is because they provide FACTS! Something a majority of society neglects based on their feelings! These guys could do this 1,000,000 times with all sorts of stories where reporters and communities victimize suspects before there's ever a trial and those feelings developed from false statements or wrongly assumed ideas is what sets the bar for cases like this. Both parents are guilty, it's obvious, but the fact that the community demonized her and provided the notion that she was a complete monster and murdered her child is what set the bar for the trial is exactly what we see from news and society every day. We need more journalist like you out there - providing unbiased facts - Great work fellas! Unfortunately she was neglectful and even more unfortunately, lost her son. Sad, sad story. But it gives all of us parents a great reminder that even a few moments alone can be deadly for any young child.

Unique Lens
This podcast dissects class bias within society and our justice system. The pacing is well done and I enjoyed hearing the different perspectives on this horrible incident. Highly recommend giving this story a listen.

Social status
I think this podcast is interesting, how social media and slack journalism can lead to a false narrative quite quickly is astounding these days. I think it's important to point out (and talk about) that those prosecuting this and appealing the reversal of her appeals court verdict of not guilty (now taking it all the way to the supreme Court), likely wouldn't have taken this case so far or asked for such large punishments had this person been of wealthy status. But because she lives in a trailer, has a history of drug abuse in the past, they prosecuted her like she had taken a gun and shot her child in the head.

Excellent reporting of a very compelling story
An engaging, evocative and very well done piece of journalism. The tragedy at the centre of this story was recast in a way that made it extremely relatable, and compelling.
