Comfort show
Love binging episodes, especially continental garbage. WILD that all the Taylor Swift episodes are SO male centric when all the Gaylor lore/theorizing is right there š

Perlman and Devito were married FYI!
Rhea Perlman was married to Danny DeVito!!! Was waiting for you to close the loop on that. Even so, Dolly is always an amazing guest. You two make a terrific team. Five stars!

I learn so much!
Itās Friday night in November, and Iāve finally decided to shave two months worth of armpit hair ahead of Thanksgiving. I already adore this podcast, but somehow it flipped to an episode on mermaids that I had skipped and wasnāt intending to listen to. Hands covered in shaving gel and otherwise occupied with activity, I said, āwell, ok.ā I didnāt realize I was about to have my mind blown learning about the cultural significance of mermaids as mythical figures. What a FANTASTIC episode. This pod never lets me down!

Thoughtful and Lively
Caroline O'Donoghue is a wonderful host, and she has such a knack for getting guests who are uniquely passionate about the media they discuss. Itās a combination that makes for a great listen. On top of being great fun, Iāve found many of the episodes quite insightful. Caroline is so perceptive and thoughtful in her analysis, and I often walk away from Sentimental Garbage with a deeper or alternative understanding of a work.

Just keeps getting better and better!!
Caroline must be an amazing friend because she has the most beautiful connections with her guests. The Shania episode was perfection! Letās go girls!!!

LOVE ā Jen Cownie and Dolly eps are my faves
Caroline always has a fun take and does a great job bouncing off her guests, but my fave eps for emotional depth and humor are always the folks she has history with like Jen and Dolly. Love the Taylor eps, plus the fantasy series and continental garbage especially!

Fun chat but poorly researched
If your podcast is just you and a friend talking about movies etc and how they made you feel thatās fine and great and youāre doing a good job at it. However, if youāre going to talk about actually facts related to the making of the films then you need to do your research. Listening to the Shrek episode, the story you told about Eisner and Katzenburg is missing some important details and parts of it were just wrong. I totally enjoy you talking about what you love in these movies but if you want to share facts please research them first or just donāt. For those of us who love movies and the stories behind how theyāre made it makes it impossible to listen.

Adolescent Garbage
Long time listener, first time reviewer⦠I was so so moved by the most recent episode on the Hunger Games that I had to write in & gush about this special little sweetie baby show!
Caroline: Iāve always dreamed of Suzanne Collins getting her due on this podcast, but I always assumed the Hunger Games was too much in the Adolescent Garbage camp & wouldnāt be right for this show.
I didnāt know these books meant so much to you, and as someone who has been rooting for Miss Overdog Suzanne to get the recognition she deserves as the great anti-capitalist prophet that she is for years now ā I just want to say thank you & give you a big virtual hug! Also #TeamPeeta forever!!! <3 Youāre sleeping on the boy with the bread!

Amazing analysis of SATC, a ton of fun and deep insight

Disappointing? Iām not sure
The bones of this podcast are great, but the host has a thing that makes me very sad where she, while praising the shining light on cultural artifacts and the depth of so much work thatās been coded as feminine and maligned, maligns other amazing work. She loves Bring it On for the message of cultural appropriation but think Clueless is fluffy nonsense (aka sentimental garbage?)? This confuses me and it happens a lot. Also, the SATC season 3 analysis completely missed the mark because the hosts didnāt contextualize it as the first season after 9-11, and it lead them down tunnels of falseness. Itās just almost but not. I gave it a solid effort but I canāt go on with this one. Maybe if you are younger and donāt have so much experience with the work she covers, it would be easier to take it in without the glaring holes and mistakes distracting you.
Almost impossible to listen to two people who donāt know Rent harp on Tick Tick Boom. Justā¦you donāt know. You do not know. Anything.

West Side Story with Jensen McRae
What a delight!!! This ep hit all of my faves. 1. Really smart women, sharing ideas; 2. A deep dive into one topic that sprouted new ideasātangents I want explore further; 3. These women are sooo articulate, charming, passionate, curious; 4. I learned new stuff about a musical I thought I knew well; 5. I learned something that really fascinated me about music itself ā a very specific spotlight on the beginning of one song. Thank you, Carolyn and Jensen!

This Oneās For The Girls
After a demoralizing week here in America, the Taylor Swift episode stitched my soul back together. I laughed, I cried, I remembered that I am the Taylor Swift of my own life and itās ok to feel my feelings. Thank you for that amazing hour and a half of pure girlhood. Iāve shared it with every Swiftie and Swiftocrat I know!

A Treasure
I love this show, Caroline is fantastic and consistently has thoughtful and delightful guests. Outside of all the insightful commentary, it is just so refreshing to hear women genuinely enjoy things out loud and unabashedly. Carolineās laugh is so contagious I often find myself giggling along with her.
PS- please do a TPPD episode with Jen!

Have dreamt in an Irish accent since finding this show
I am the person listening to these episodes over and over because theyāre my smart, witty friends.
. Better than the Original!
Sentimental in the City
Have I watched the entirety of Sex and the city, or And Just Like That? No.
Have I listened to Sentimental in the City twice a year since Dolly and Caroline first started recording together? YES.
Love the whole pod, but especially need to talk about how much I adore Sentimental in the City. Itās everything.

My favorite podcast
When I heard that Dolly bought Caroline the pink Christian Louboutins that Mirandaās water broke on, I cried. I will forgive them for not loving Todd Rundgrenās āHello, Itās Me.ā Tommy the Irish Doorman 4-Ever. I just love these women. Brilliant writers, brilliant talkers, brilliant friends.

Sentimental in the City
Found this podcast after hearing Sarah Marshall rave about it. These two ladies are absolute gems. I felt myself blush at a few moments because itās so relatable. You often hear about podcasts, āI just feel like Iām sitting down with real friends, people I know!ā Well, hearing this podcast is the first time Iāve truly understood what that meant. Cannot wait to hear more. As Samantha would say, just fabulous!

Wonderful podcast, poorly recorded
This show feels a lot like getting a drink with my most interesting friends. There are so many laughs and excellent insights and moments that make you go, āOh wow.ā But add me to the chorus of people who are frustrated with the sound quality. Iām listening to the āBreak-upsā episode and both speakers literally go from whispering to screaming with laughter, really frequently, so I feel like Iām missing a quarter of the jokes because I canāt change the sound volumes quickly enough to hear whatās being said without having a very loud laugh blow out my ears. OāDonoghue especially loves to deliver her cattiest jokes sotto voce, and Iām always bummed when I simply have to miss one of her excellent burns, because I canāt hear it.

Love the show! BUTā¦
Please please please adjust the levels on your microphone so that when you laugh it doesnāt cause a load of fry through microphone and also *please* make sure the guest is at vaguely the same volume as the host! On more than one episode i have spent the whole show turning it up and down and it really takes away from the experience. The content is 10/10ābut the production quality could be improved.

Insightful and joyful
When I commute to work this is one of my favorite podcasts. I feel I am chilling and hanging with girlfriends. Caroline has a lot of great insights about characters, plot lines, why a story works or what couldāve made a story better etc. I enjoy her perspectives on creative works as a creative person myself. Sheās also just a joy to listen to and I laugh out loud with her constantly! Lovely personality, intelligent, spunky, all wrapped up with an endearing Irish accent!

Insightful AND delightful
This podcast is brilliant and funnyāsnarky too, when necessary! Caroline OāDonoghue and her wonderful guests do an incredible job of exploring books, movies, tv shows, and music, sharing funny and tender and scathing insights in equal measure. Each time I listen to an episode Iām reminded why I love reading, love my friends, and need those conversations about what matters most in our lives and in the cultures we share.

absolutely great
Always makes me laugh and think, takes the sentimental stuff women are so often derided for loving, and gives it the attention it deserves. Caroline is so funny and smart, the guests are fab. I love that it talks, through culture, about what it feels like to be a teenage girl and young woman in such an open-hearted way, never scornful but not taking itself too seriously

An absolutely fantastic podcast!
Sentimental Garbage is one of my favorite podcasts - whip-smart, hilarious, and thoughtful analysis about pop culture. Highly recommend!

Love it, but the sound is terrible
Honestly, one of the funniest podcasts, I love every minute of it, but what actually made me write a review is the fact that every single episode is recorded terribly. Could you, please, please, hire someone who could do it better? ā¤ļø HNY to youuu!

Influencer episode was not it
This is a pretty interesting pod but I could NOT handle the influencer episode. The entitlement, privilege and tone deafness of the entire thing really turned me off.

My Irish BFF
Thanks to Dolly Aldertonās feature on āsentimental in the city,ā I was able to discover this amazing podcast & its lovable, hilarious host who *feels the most* in the best ways possible. Caroline chooses the most lovely guests to complement her & add to the richness of discussions about all the things you & your friends could spend hours discussing, like the movies and music from your childhood. Love Caroline, love this podcast & honestly canāt wait until season 2 AJLT for more Dolly in the future with her, too, because they have the most infectious energy together.

Best, loveliest podcast
I am a huge lover of both Caroline OāDonoghue and Dolly Alderton as authors and this podcast made me fall in love with them both as people. Listening to their sentimental in the city series feels like weāre all in someoneās living room, having a wineād up chat about SATC ā¦and everything that it brings up in each of us. Laugh out loud and always, always, always (!!!) spot on. So glad the podcast ā and the podcasters themselvesā exist. Happy to be a chattering oddball š«”

IT IS JEREMY STRONG!!!
Love sentimental and the city series. Took a chance 10 minutes before getting a procedure done, put it on auto play, and was delighted to have they wonderful ladies keep me company. Their description of the arc of season 1 - blew my mind. It is insane to think of how many times Iāve seen these episodes and talked about them - that there could be two people out there who could breathe such fresh life into the series. I learned so much and got so much perspective. I even learned to like the ring episode. I do wish they had talked about the fleet week episode being the first written and filmed post 9/11, though I realize Iām a bit older and more American.

Charming, Hilarious & Heartfelt
I discovered this podcast randomly - and so happy I did. I first started listening to the Sentimental in the City episodes but quickly started adding all episodes to my queue. I personally connect more with the movie discussions and enjoy making a night of them - like how I never saw Coyote Ugly but took a quarantined night in to listen to the podcast as I cooked/ cleaned then watched the movie while I ate and had so much fun laughing at the scenes and moments the podcast lovingly poked fun at. Although Iām from the US I also loved the High Street episode - really any bit of nostalgia makes me happy.
So excited for new episodes to start coming out - thanks Caroline for the laughs!

Love Carolineās Unabashed Fangirl Positivity!
I discovered this podcast in spring 2021 because I was rewatching SATC - ended up loving Caroline & Dollyās take on everything so much that I stayed subscribed when Sentimental in the City was overā¦so glad I did! The topics that have been discussed since are delightful to listen to and reminisce about! Iām the same age as Caroline so a lot of the cultural references make sense to me and are just a joy to listen to. Iāve revisited many movies since with these insights in mind - itās so fun! Thank you so much for a smart and happy podcast!

The Sister I Wish I Had
Iām the little sister of two older brothers and I spent most of my life rejecting the feminine media I loved because I wanted them to think I was cool. Listening to this feels like healing that lil girl who loved dresses but only wore her brothersās hand me downs. Thanks you!

Nothing guilty about this pleasure
I discovered this podcast when I heard Caroline on Backlisted talking about a book and writer Iād never heard of, and I wanted more! I didnāt even like sex in the city as a show but Iām enjoying listening to the pod! I have so many suggestions for books you should do, but Iām going to settle on Twilight and Whereād You Go Bernadette. Please!!
