Psalm | Psalm 63 (with Nick Locke)
Opening Song: O Lord, open our lips and our mouths will declare Your praise. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen. The Scripture for today is Ps 63:1-9. Let’s prepare our hearts to hear from God’s word as we listen to Psalm 63 (Better Than Life) by Robbie Seay. With a repetitive, plaintive melody, the vocalist sings out the desires of the psalmist. Each chorus returns to the personal relationship aspect of the passage: “O God, O God, You are my God.” Lyrics: O God O God You are my God earnestly I seek You O God O God You are my God my soul thirsts for You O God O God You are my God my flesh faints for You Like in a dry and weary land where there is no water I've looked upon You in the sanctuary Beholding Your power and glory For Your steadfast love is better than life My lips will praise You God God You are my God and earnestly I seek You O God O God You are my God my soul thirsts for You Like in a dry and weary land where there is no water I've looked upon You in the sanctuary Beholding Your power and glory For Your steadfast love is better than life Your steadfast love is better than life Oh Your love is better than life My lips will praise You O God O God You are my God O God O God You are my God O God oh ooo O God O God You are my God Passage: God, you are my God; I eagerly seek you. I thirst for you; my body faints for you in a land that is dry, desolate, and without water. 2 So I gaze on you in the sanctuary to see your strength and your glory. 3 My lips will glorify you because your faithful love is better than life. 4 So I will bless you as long as I live; at your name, I will lift up my hands. 5 You satisfy me as with rich food; my mouth will praise you with joyful lips. 6 When I think of you as I lie on my bed, I meditate on you during the night watches 7 because you are my helper; I will rejoice in the shadow of your wings. 8 I follow close to you; your right hand holds on to me. 9 But those who intend to destroy my life will go into the depths of the earth. 10 They will be given over to the power of the sword; they will become a meal for jackals. 11 But the king will rejoice in God; all who swear by him will boast, for the mouths of liars will be shut. -- Psalms 63:1-11 (CSB) Musical Reflection: Jesus, Remember Me by Jacques Berthier Reflection Notes: “Jesus, Remember Me” is a tune from the French Taizé tradition; these simple songs are meant to be repeated indefinitely with added instrumentation or voice parts. They are meant to be meditative and allow for prayer. Prayer:

Old Testament | 1 Samuel 3:1-20 (with Tom Gastil)
Opening Song: Here’s My Heart by Chris Tomlin, Jason Ingram, Louie Giglio, sung by Lauren Daigle Lyrics: Here's my heart Lord Here's my heart Lord Here's my heart Lord Speak what is true 'Cause I am found I am Yours I am loved I'm made pure I have life I can breathe I am healed I am free 'Cause You are strong You are sure You are life You endure You are good always true You are light breaking through Here's my heart Lord Here's my heart Lord Here's my heart Lord Speak what is true Here's my life Lord Here's my life Lord Here's my life Lord Speak what is true Speak what is true Speak what is true You are more than enough You are here You are love You are hope You are grace You're all I have You're everything Passage: The boy Samuel served the Lord in Eli’s presence. In those days the word of the Lord was rare and prophetic visions were not widespread. 2 One day Eli, whose eyesight was failing, was lying in his usual place. 3 Before the lamp of God had gone out, Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was located. 4 Then the Lord called Samuel, and he answered, “Here I am.” 5 He ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” “I didn’t call,” Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down. 6 Once again the Lord called, “Samuel! ” Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am; you called me.” “I didn’t call, my son,” he replied. “Go back and lie down.” 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, because the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. 8 Once again, for the third time, the Lord called Samuel. He got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli understood that the Lord was calling the boy. 9 He told Samuel, “Go and lie down. If he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 The Lord came, stood there, and called as before, “Samuel, Samuel! ” Samuel responded, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” 11 The Lord said to Samuel, “I am about to do something in Israel that will cause everyone who hears about it to shudder. 12 On that day I will carry out against Eli everything I said about his family, from beginning to end. 13 I told him that I am going to judge his family forever because of the iniquity he knows about: his sons are cursing God, and he has not stopped them. 14 Therefore, I have sworn to Eli’s family: The iniquity of Eli’s family will never be wiped out by either sacrifice or offering.” 15 Samuel lay down until the morning; then he opened the doors of the Lord’s house. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, 16 but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.” “Here I am,” answered Samuel. 17 “What was the message he gave you? ” Eli asked. “Don’t hide it from me. May God punish you and do so severely if you hide anything from me that he told you.” 18 So Samuel told him everything and did not hide anything from him. Eli responded, “He is the Lord. Let him do what he thinks is good.” 19 Samuel grew. The Lord was with him, and he fulfilled everything Samuel prophesied. 20 All Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was a confirmed prophet of the Lord. 21 The Lord continued to appear in Shiloh, because there he revealed himself to Samuel by his word. -- 1 Samuel 3:1-21 (CSB) Musical Reflection: I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say (KINGSFOLD), English folk song from anthology by Lucy E. Broadwood and J. A. Fuller Maitland, harmonized by Ralph Vaughan Williams Reflection Notes: Famed English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams heard this tune from an English folk song anthology and harmonized it for the text by Horatius Bonar. The first and third sections of the song are primarily in e minor, while the middle section transitions to the relative major key. Prayer: Father, what we know not, teach us; what we have not, give us; what we are not, make us; for the sake of your Son our Savior. Amen. -Old Anglican Prayer

Gospel | Mark 1:7-11 (with Nick Locke)
Opening Song: Who is this Jesus? by Caroline Cobb Lyrics: I saw His face shine like the sun On the mountainside Elijah and Moses were there Pale in His glorious light And a voice came like thunder And I trembled all over Said this My beloved child Who is this Jesus but the Son of God I saw Him walk on the waves I saw Him still the storm I saw the demons afraid But the children safe in His arms He said Lazarus rise up wake from your sleep And his dead heart started to beat Who is this Jesus but the Son of God I leaned my head back on His chest For He was my friend He poured the wine He broke the bread It was near the end I saw them take Him beat Him try to break Him And hang Him on the cross They laughed they mocked Him He said God forgive them It’s finished now it is done The sky black as ink the earth shook with grief As He breathed His last and was gone Who is this Jesus who is this Jesus Who is this Jesus but the Son of God Who is this Jesus but the Son of God I saw the stone rolled away I saw His empty tomb I saw the scars in His hands there in the upper room Passage: 7 He proclaimed, “One who is more powerful than I am is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the strap of his sandals. 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. 10 As soon as he came up out of the water, he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well-pleased.” -- Mark 1:7-11 (CSB) Musical Reflection: “Be Thou My Vision,” old Irish folk tune Reflection Notes: The hymn commonly known as “Be Thou My Vision” is set to the tune SLANE, which is an old Irish folk tune. It samples both major and minor tonalities, with a perfect balance between the two. Prayer: Eternal Father, at the baptism of Jesus you revealed him to be your Son, and your Holy Spirit descended upon him like a dove: Grant that we, who are born again by water and the Spirit, may be faithful as your adopted children; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

New Testament | Acts 10:34-38 (with Nick Locke)
Opening Song: All of Your Ways Are Peace by The Porter’s Gate Lyrics: All of Your ways are peace All of Your ways are peace Though are we are pressed on every side We trust that You are peace All of Your words are truth All of Your words are truth Though we have heard so many lies We trust Your words are truth All of Your ways are just All of Your ways are just Though we may say it through our tears We trust that You are just All of Your ways are peace All of Your ways are peace All of Your ways are peace All of Your ways are peace Passage: 34 Peter began to speak: “Now I truly understand that God doesn’t show favoritism, 35 but in every nation the person who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36 He sent the message to the Israelites, proclaiming the good news of peace through Jesus Christ — he is Lord of all. 37 You know the events that took place throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John preached: 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how he went about doing good and healing all who were under the tyranny of the devil, because God was with him. -- Acts 10:34-38 (CSB) Musical Reflection: Nothing But The Blood (PLAINFIELD) by Robert Lowry Reflection Notes: Lowry wrote several hymns for his congregation’s use in the late nineteenth century. This particular tune is pentatonic (only five notes used per octave) and falls within a small vocal range, which made it accessible for all parishioners to sing and enjoy. Prayer: Father of all mercies, you revealed your boundless compassion to your apostle Saint Peter in a three-fold vision: Forgive our unbelief, we pray, and so strengthen our hearts and enkindle our zeal, that we may fervently desire the salvation of all people, and diligently labor in the extension of your kingdom; through him who gave himself for the life of the world, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Bradbury Reflection Notes: This sweet and familiar song was written in 1861 for the composer’s church school and has become a favorite because of the warm reminders associated with its text: “Jesus loves me, this I know.” Prayer: O God, the King eternal, whose light divides the day from the night and turns the shadow of death into the morning: Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep your law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that, having done your will with cheerfulness during the day, we may, when night comes, rejoice to give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Old Testament | Isaiah 42:1-9 (with Nick Locke)
Opening Song: We Believe in the Name by Isaac Wardell, Liz Vice, Orlando Palmer, and Paul Zach Lyrics: We believe in the saving power In the saving power Of the name His name is justice A mighty fortress A balm for the weary Our refuge and our strength His name is power Our strong deliverer We believe in Jesus name We believe in the name We believe in the healing power In the healing power Of the name What's His Name Jesus Passage: “This is my servant; I strengthen him, this is my chosen one; I delight in him. I have put my Spirit on him; he will bring justice to the nations. 2 He will not cry out or shout or make his voice heard in the streets. 3 He will not break a bruised reed, and he will not put out a smoldering wick; he will faithfully bring justice. 4 He will not grow weak or be discouraged until he has established justice on earth. The coasts and islands will wait for his instruction.” 5 This is what God, the Lord, says — who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk on it — 6 “I am the Lord. I have called you for a righteous purpose, and I will hold you by your hand. I will watch over you, and I will appoint you to be a covenant for the people and a light to the nations, 7 in order to open blind eyes, to bring out prisoners from the dungeon, and those sitting in darkness from the prison house. 8 I am the Lord. That is my name, and I will not give my glory to another or my praise to idols. 9 The past events have indeed happened. Now I declare new events; I announce them to you before they occur.” -- Isaiah 42:1-9 (CSB) Musical Reflection: O Lord, Hear My Prayer by Jacques Berthier Reflection Notes: This song from the Taizé community contains a series of pleas: “O Lord, hear my prayer, O Lord, hear my prayer; when I call, answer me.” The repeated notes emphasize the insistence of the sung prayer, while the descending lines indicate a deep, almost despairing desire to connect. Prayer: Father, what we know not, teach us; what we have not, give us; what we are not, make us; for the sake of your Son our Savior. Amen. -Old Anglican Prayer

Monday Reflection | Romans 5:1-11
Sunday’s Sermon: Aliso Creek Church Podcast Passage: Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 We have also obtained access through him by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also boast in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, 4 endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope. 5 This hope will not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. THE JUSTIFIED ARE RECONCILED 6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For rarely will someone die for a just person — though for a good person perhaps someone might even dare to die. 8 But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 How much more then, since we have now been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from wrath. 10 For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, then how much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. 11 And not only that, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received this reconciliation. -- Romans 5:1-11 (CSB) Song: My Song is Love Unknown by Samuel Crossman and John Ireland Lyrics: My song is love unknown– my Savior’s love to me; love to the loveless shown, that they might lovely be. Oh, who am I, that for my sake my Lord should take frail flesh and die? He came from His blest throne salvation to bestow; but men made strange, and none the longed for Christ would know. But oh, my Friend, my Friend indeed, who at my need His life did spend! Sometimes they strew His way, and His sweet praises sing; resounding all the day hosannas to their King. Then “Crucify!” is all their breath, and for His death they thirst and cry. Why, what hath my Lord done? What makes this rage and spite? He made the lame to run; He gave the blind their sight. Sweet injuries! Yet they at these themselves displease, and 'gainst Him rise. They rise, and needs will have my dear Lord made away. A murderer they save; the Prince of Life they slay. Yet cheerful He to suff'ring goes, that He His foes from thence might free. In life, no house, no home my Lord on earth might have; in death, no friendly tomb but what a stranger gave. What may I say? Heav'n was His home; but mine the tomb wherein He lay. Here might I stay and sing– no story so divine! Never was love, dear King, never was grief like Thine. This is my Friend, in whose sweet praise I all my days could gladly spend. Prayer: This is another day, O Lord. I know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently. And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly. Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit of Jesus. Amen.

Gospel | John 1:1-18 (with Nick Locke)
Opening Song: Light of the World (Sing Hallelujah) by Andrew Bergthold, Ed Cash, Franni Cash, Martin Cash, and Scott Cash Lyrics: Light of the World Treasure of Heaven Brilliant like the stars in the wintery sky Joy of the Father reach through the darkness Shine across the earth send the shadows to flight Light of the World from the beginning The tragedies of time were no match for Your love From great heights of glory You saw my story God You entered in and became one of us Sing hallelujah Sing hallelujah Sing hallelujah for the things He has done Come and adore Him Bow down before Him Sing hallelujah to the Light of the World Light of the world crown in a manger Born for the cross to suffer to save High King of Heaven death is the poorer We are the richer by the price that He paid Light of the World soon will be coming With fire in His eyes He will ransom His own Through clouds He will lead us straight into glory And there He shall reign forevermore forevermore Passage: 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light. 9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was created through him, and yet the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, he gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in his name, 13 who were born, not of natural descent, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God. 14 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John testified concerning him and exclaimed, “This was the one of whom I said, ‘The one coming after me ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’”) 16 Indeed, we have all received grace upon grace from his fullness, 17 for the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. The one and only Son, who is himself God and is at the Father’s side—he has revealed him. (John 1:1-18 CSB17) Musical Reflection: Harp meditation No. 1 by Gretchen Kirby Reflection Notes: A repetitive pattern in the left hand provides a meditative foundation while the right hand experiments with ascending lines. The tune is meant to be joyful and evoke delight. Prayer: Almighty God, you have poured upon us the new light of your incarnate Word: Grant that this light, kindled in our hearts, may shine forth in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

New Testament | Galatians 3:23-4:7 (with Nick Locke)
Opening Song: No Longer Slaves by Brian Johnson, Joel Case, and Jonathan David Helser Lyrics: You unravel me with a melody You surround me with a song Of deliverance from my enemies Till all my fears are gone I'm no longer a slave to fear I am a child of God I'm no longer a slave to fear I am a child of God From my Mother's womb You have chosen me Love has called my name I've been born again into Your family Your blood flows through my veins Bridge You split the sea so I could walk right through it My fears were drowned in perfect love You rescued me so I could stand and sing I am a child of God Passage: 23 Before this faith came, we were confined under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith was revealed. 24 The law, then, was our guardian until Christ, so that we could be justified by faith. 25 But since that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for through faith you are all sons of God in Christ Jesus. 27 For those of you who were baptized into Christ have been clothed with Christ. 28 There is no Jew or Greek, slave or free, male and female; since you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, heirs according to the promise. 1 Now I say that as long as the heir is a child, he differs in no way from a slave, though he is the owner of everything. 2 Instead, he is under guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. 3 In the same way we also, when we were children, were in slavery under the elements of the world. 4 When the time came to completion, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba, Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then God has made you an heir. (Galatians 3:23-4:7 CSB17) Musical Reflection: It Is Well With My Soul (VILLE DU HAVRE) by Philip Bliss Reflection Notes: A hymn born in tragedy, “It is Well” was penned by Horatio Spafford after hearing that his daughters had all perished in a shipwreck. Through this devastation, Spafford and his wife clung to the promise of God’s goodness. Spafford’s immortal words were set to music by his good friend and hymn writer, Philip Bliss; Bliss titled the tune “Ville du Havre” after the ship on which Spafford’s children had died. Prayer: Almighty God, heavenly Father, we ask you to work in us by your Holy Spirit, so that we may rightly know you, and sanctify, glorify, and praise you in all your works, in which shine forth your omnipotence, wisdom, goodness, righteousness, mercy, and truth. Grant us also that we may so direct our whole life—thoughts, words, and deeds—that your name is not blasphemed because of us, but honored and praised. Amen.  -Zacharias Ursinus

Psalm | Psalm 147:12-20 (with Tom Gastil)
Opening Song: Psalm 147 by Poor Bishop Hooper Lyrics: How good it is How good it is To sing praise To our God How good it is How good it is To sing praise To our God Oh, how good it is How good it is To sing praise To our God How good it is How good it is To sing praise to our God For the Lord builds up Jerusalem Brings all the outcasts home again He heals the broken hearted He binds up their wounds Every single star He's counted then How great His power, abundant Understanding beyond measurement He lifts up the humble Casts the wicked down How good it is How good it is To sing praise To our God How good it is How good it is To sing praise To our God, God, God, God He gives clouds to the heavens Brings up the grass on the mountains He gives food to the animals When they cry He feeds their young Oh, He takes no delight in the horse's strength Takes no delight in a man's legs He takes delight in those who fear Him And hope in His love How good it is How good it is To sing praise To our God How good it is How good it is To sing praise To our God How good it is How good it is To sing praise To our God How good it is How good it is To sing praise To our God Passage: 12 Exalt the LORD, Jerusalem; praise your God, Zion! 13 For he strengthens the bars of your city gates and blesses your children within you. 14 He endows your territory with prosperity; he satisfies you with the finest wheat. 15 He sends his command throughout the earth; his word runs swiftly. 16 He spreads snow like wool; he scatters frost like ashes; 17 he throws his hailstones like crumbs. Who can withstand his cold? 18 He sends his word and melts them; he unleashes his winds, and the water flows. 19 He declares his word to Jacob, his statutes and judgments to Israel. 20 He has not done this for every nation; they do not know his judgments. Hallelujah! (Psalm 147:12-20 CSB17) Musical Reflection: Jesus, Remember Me by Jacques Berthier Reflection Notes: “Jesus, Remember Me” is a tune from the French Taizé tradition; these simple songs are meant to be repeated indefinitely with added instrumentation or voice parts. They are meant to be meditative and allow for prayer. Prayer: Lord, ethical behavior without joy-filled worship or exuberant praise without whole-life obedience—both of these are counterfeit Christianities. I have veered in both directions in my life. Keep me on the straight path. I offer you my whole life, mind, will, and emotions. Amen. -Timothy Keller
