This episode of the Salty Hunter Podcast I sit down with me, myself, and I recapping the spring bear season (yes, I know it’s August), but to be honest with you I wasn’t sure I wanted to publish this. Although I have been called many things in my life dishonest is not one of them. So here is the story. Unabridged, unchanged and you hear it straight from me.
This story does not have a happy ending. It does not bring hunting into a good light. But it does let you know of the type of person I am and continue striving to be. Around the hunting industry you hear buzzwords like ethical, moral, lethal and the list goes on and on and on. In this story you will hear words like: greedy, regret, ego and “what the fuck am I doing?”. This is the true story about my spring hunting season. It was heartbreaking, frustrating, and making me question whether I want to hunt with a recurve ever again.
Thank you all for listening. I love every damn one of you.

This episode of the Salty Hunter Podcast we have Mr. Mark Bottenhorn. Mark regards himself as a hybrid athlete, meaning he isn't just about endurance. He competes in powerlifting competitions and runs 100-mile races in the same year. He's scientific in his approach to whatever competition he's training for.
We talk about the differences in the ultra-running community vs the marathon community, the mental side of running further than the marathon distances, your demons on the trail, strength training during your training cycles, diet during training, being a hybrid athlete, the list goes on and on and on.
This guy is an encyclopedia of information when it comes to training and fitness. Listen to this podcast, LEARN from it. Learn how you can make it yours. Take away what you need to and implement it in your daily routine.
As always, thank you all for listening. I love every damn one of you.

This episode of the Salty Hunter Podcast we have my good friend Jeremy. Jeremy is transplant from the lower 48 coming from the mean streets of Chicago. Jeremy moved up here following a job, chasing a dream, following the pull to leave a concrete jungle and explore the wilderness. He moved up here with no real plan, and much like myself fell in love with everything Alaska has to offer.
Jeremy has since become a self-sufficient hunter and fisherman. In his short time here, he has quite the resume built up. I’m sure he will be adding to that resume this fall.
This episode is not just about a guy that moved here form the lower 48. Its about a guy that took a chance and is making things happen. Living the dream he set out to find. Taking a chance. And acting on instinct. I respect the hell out of his drive. Its easy for people to say, “must be nice”. “Must be nice to live in a state where you can hunt and fish all the time.” “Must be nice to be able to get out of town every weekend.” “Must be nice to be able to just up and move everything.”
I’m here to tell you that it is nice. And it takes a lot of fucking work to get it done.
Thank you all for listening. I love every damn one of you.

Today we have a chat with Justin Andreas. Justin began running in 2018 finishing a half-marathon. Little did he know that he would expand that to doing a couple 100-mile races in less than 4 years. The Bighorn 100 is nothing to scoff at. Crazy elevation gain, rugged mountains, technical trail running, stupid hot and frigid cold all rolled into a 100-mile suffer fest. Justin endured it all and finished with a smile on his face.
We talk gear, training, diet, running to be a better hunter and hunting to fuel the run. But what I really enjoyed was him sharing his in-race strategies at the aid stations, how he thought about his gear drops and what he needed from his team at the aid stations. I have not managed to nail down how I will fuel myself on my next long run, but his insights are pushing me in the right direction. To add a little bit more excitement to the day, his wife completed her first ultra in the same mountains on the same day!
I appreciated having Justin on, and with his move to Alaska coming up soon I imagine we will be hearing from him very soon.
Thank you all for listening, I love every damn one of you.

If you can’t hear the enthusiasm in my voice in this episode, get your ears checked. Strap in for Chris Pollack; spearfisherman from Seldovia, AK. Seldovia is a sleepy little town across Kachemak Bay from the Homer Spit. Chris and his family live there full-time; diving, spearfishing, hunting, and catching monster halibut from human powered boats. These guys are the real deal when it comes to freediving and spearfishing in cold water.
We talk gear, recipes, underwater photography, halibut attacking your spear, giant sea lions, human powered fishing tournaments and different ways to train your body for freediving. I loved every second of this podcast and Chris doesn’t know it yet, but he’s coming back on the podcast after my first experience in the water.
You guys are going to enjoy the hell out of this one. I did.
Thank you all for listening, I love every damn one of you.

Welcome back to the Salty Hunter Podcast. Today we have Craig Van Arsdale, a die-hard hunter who has recently moved to Alaska. Craig moved to Alaska from Eastern Washington to start chasing his hunting adventures up here. In the meantime, Craig has spent time in Kazakhstan and the Caucasus Mountains of Russia chasing ibex.
International hunting does not typically fascinate me, but chasing and Altai Argali in Mongolia, and a Marco Polo Sheep in Tajikistan are my top two hunts that I would leave North America for. Craig was chasing ibex in Asia and racking up many adventures along the way; mainly logistical nightmares turning into funny stories and wacky experiences.
Craig's done everything from being an electrician, to becoming an investor to give himself more free time to hunt. Roll in that he's a hell of a photographer and you can see why Craig has no problem finding adventure.
You guys are going to enjoy this episode, I enjoyed the hell out of this interview. Thank you all for listening, I love every damn I'm one of you.

This episode of the Salty Hunter Podcast we have Aaron Stacy of Primal Run Coaching on for round 3. Aaron is gracious enough to come on the show and pass along some more of his wisdom. We talk about gear, time management, diet, cross-training and other aspects of being an endurance athlete; like how important it is to have your family in your corner supporting what you do.
We also talk about a fundraiser that he is helping with. Aaron is running the Pine to Palm 100 Mile Endurance Run and will be running for Wild Souls Ranch, located just outside of his hometown. Wild Souls Ranch is dedicated to helping at-risk youth; showing them their full potential through hard work, working with their hands, maintaining a farm, learning to communicate, and discovering strength in themselves. Consider donating, all of the money goes to a scholarship fund for these kids. They have a goal of $3,000 and they are on their way to making it happen. Be a part of the solution.

This episode of the Salty Hunter Podcast I am joined by one of my best friends and hunting partner Neil. Neil has been on the show several times, but on this one we let the good times roll. He's still active duty Army and getting stationed back in the lower 48, but will be back soon for more hunting adventures.
Losing a hunting partner or someone that just has the FILGO attitude can leave a hole in your plans. But I am confident he will be back and we will be making a hell of a lot more memories.
Thank you all for listening. I love every damn one of you.

On this episode of the Salty Hunter Podcast, we have Tana Grenda, badass woman of the North. Tana lives in King Salmon way West of Anchorage. She is the mother of 6 kids, owns her own business, hosts a podcast, and is one of the more successful hunters I have had the pleasure of meeting. We touch on her bear hunt that got pretty damn western last year, her nearly world record caribou and archery moose hunt. She has been on a hot streak, and frankly, I’m jealous.
We also touch on mountain fitness, ultra-running (of course), nutrition, living in the bush, her ruck challenge, hiking with the right muscles and getting your mind right for training. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation. A million thanks to Tana for coming on. Good luck this season.
Thank you all for listening. I love every damn one of you.

This episode of the Salty Hunter Podcast we have Jeff Lund; host of the Mediocre Alaskan Podcast but it is anything but mediocre. Jeff is a writer, teacher, hunter, and fanatical steelhead fisherman from Ketchikan. I have a deep fascination with southeast AK and must admit that if I were to live anywhere else in the state it would be in Jeff’s neck of the woods. We talk photography, touch on his book and other articles he’s writing, gear in the backcountry, being realistic about hunting out of state, handing off tags if you cant hunt that year, WSA 21-01 (I get a little heated), and anecdotal stories in wildlife management.
You can find Jeff’s book A Miserable Paradise on Amazon, and a few bookstores here in town. I’ve read it, loved it, and I’m sure you will too.
