The Motorsport Brief | 3rd generation racer Ryder Quinn
We recorded this one with the final podium of the weekend underway for the Speed Series round at Queensland Raceway and pack down starting. Ryder Quinn is only in his early 20’s but is now part of the BMW M racing academy. He has the trademark Quinn family work ethic away from the track but has been round the sport since before he could walk. Ryder’s late start in the sport, how it came about and the huge learning curve he’s been on since then. A special helmet he made for his Grandfather, Tony Quinn, that left ‘Popeye’ as Ryder calls him speechless. The GT4 race that really put him on the map after charging through the field with fastest lap after fastest lap. And going to Bathurst for a history making family 12hour entry and how Ryder wowed the gun internationals with his performance. It’s the latest in our shortcasts that tackle the Next Gen and the early part of their own journey in Motorsport. Michael Dowson | Part 1 - Hansford’s brilliance and wheelies at Bathurst
Thanks to all of our loyal listeners who messaged and asked for this one. It’s an overdue chat with a bike racing legend who was just as skillful in Touring Cars. The unexpected medical benefits of heading west as a youngster and how early experiences with dirt bikes made a powerful impact. His vivid recollections of the late Gregg Hansford at Waneroo and how he was spellbound by his riding. The advice from a rival who convinced Dowson’s incredibly supportive parents that he had the right stuff but a move to the east coast might open more doors.Plus a connection to Supercars commentator Chad Neylon and being brave enough to hold it wide open at Bathurst. This is the first half of a ripper conversation with the rider they call ‘the Doorman’ and ‘the Colonel’ the hugely talented and widely respected Michael Dowson. The Motorsport Brief | Tim Schenken from the Garage back catalogue
The next two weeks are some of the best on the annual Motorsport calendar with the Monaco Grand Prix and the 24 hours of Le Mans. For this episode of the Brief we have gone right back to season 1 (2018) to bring you a slice of an episode you may not have heard before - Tim Schenken. Tim is one of only a handful of Aussie’s to race Formula 1 at Monaco and he went on to race sportscars for Ferrari. Working with an emerging Ron Dennis and memories of Bernie Ecclestone, a then relatively new player in F1. Thinking he was being pranked when Enzo Ferrari asked to meet him and the priceless car he turned down the chance to own. Tim went on to have an incredible career working for the Governing Body in Australia then called CAMS and now Motorsport Australia. A respected Clerk of the Course at the Australian Grand Prix who has been awarded and OAM for his services and rightly inducted into the Hall of Fame. If you enjoy this and would like to hear more search for the full Feature Episode with Tim Schenken released back in March 2018.https://www.australianmotorsporthalloffame.com.au/inductees/tim-schenken/ Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know who you want to hear from on Rusty's GarageSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy informationSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Brendon Leitch | Part 1 - workshop lessons & cold calls
Growing up at the bottom of the world and the strong Leitch racing genes. Being round his Dad Barry’s internationally respected Motorsport restoration business and how that ‘hands on’ learning helps to this day. Getting creative to find the budget to go racing and heading off with props in his backpack after school. Working at Highlands Motorsport Park and for Scott O’Donnell (now part owner for Walkinshaw TWG Racing) in the early years. The respect for his brother Damon’s talent and Brendon’s little known cooking skills. What it was like to only race five weekends over the New Zealand summer (on a shoe string budget) but to beat some F1 stars of the future! And the bollocking he received from a respected team manager that Brendon says helped shape his career. Plus a funny rental car adventure in Japan. This is one of those eps that will genuinely draw you in. Easy going, affable but hungry and determined. Brendon gets the podcast medium too and he converses here with ease. Kenny Smith | Part 1 - a good bet & waking up with silver feet!
One of the all time greats of Motorsport from the Tasman region is finally on the pod.Ken Smith has been racing since 1958 and he’s still going! The family’s love for another kind of horsepower and how Kenny would sometimes hold up the motor racing schedule to check how his horse went.Competing against (and socializing after) with some absolute legends of the 60’s and early 70’s….Graham Hill, Bruce McLaren, Jimmy Clark, Jack Brabham and many more. His gravitation to single seater racing and winning the prestigious New Zealand Grand Prix for the first time in 1976. He then had an agonizing 14 year wait to do it again in 1990 and then another 14 year gap to his third in 2004.Even at age 84 Kenny is still razor sharp and the memories that surround us in his workshop where we recorded make for constant conversation starters. How he helped bank roll a good portion of Roberto Moreno’s summer of racing in NZ without dipping into his own pockets.  (You can hear more about this in Roberto’s Feature Ep in our library). And a friendship with Jimmy Richards that dates back to their early days.We won’t get to every one of the 160 plus cars he’s raced but the chat gives you an incredible snapshot of a life lived at full throttle.Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know who you want to hear from on Rusty's GarageSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
