The Riding to Excellence Podcast is back for 2021 and we are introducing you to a "Year of Collaboration!" Join us for monthly podcast interviews hosted by the EE team featuring collaborators, specialists, associates and clients who make big waves and meaningful impacts in their respective industries!
Energy Equine's year of collaboration kicks off featuring a familiar face at our clinics, and one of our favourites, equine dentist, Allie Lait, EqD, RVT. Allie Lait was raised in a rodeo/ranching family in southern Alberta. Her life-long involvement with horses has resulted in a career as a barrel racer, futurity trainer and equine dentist. Allie practices out of Energy Equine's clinics two days per week.
On today's podcast Allie explains the inner working of the horse's mouth and teeth, why we float, how often we should float and answers the most common and frequently asked questions about equine dentistry. A key point of our discussion surrounds how proper dental care not only plays a huge role in the horse's overall health, weight and condition, but especially factors into their successful performance and healthy and happy longevity as they grow older.

Dr. Travis Kelter wrapped up our Virtual Lecture by presenting on an issue we are seeing more and more in horses - Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS).
EMS is a characteristic collection of clinical signs in horses that put them at high risk for developing laminitis. A key feature of EMS is insulin dysregulation and results from interaction between genetics and environment. Risk factors also include abnormal fat distribution, predisposition to weight gain and resistance to weight loss, among others.
Dr. Kelter's presentation walks horse owner's through the many layers of EMS - insulin dysregulation, obesity, the clinical signs, consequences of unregulated EMS, breed dispositions and genetics, as well as dietary management and medication available.
