I ran out of ink printing the new-patient forms for my son’s doctor appointment. I’m not kidding. Thirty-five pages and two hours later, I stacked the forms on top of two five-inch education binders already filled with hundreds of pages of medical, therapy, and specialists’ evaluations.
I also had two CDs containing a sleep study and a three-day specialized video EEG along with his bag of medication bottles. I almost put a seatbelt around the suitcase-sized stacks so they wouldn’t topple over on the way to his appointment. That week alone, we spent two hours with his primary care doctor and three hours with his eye doctor, returned a 24-hour bottle of urine collected for specialized tests, spent countless hours on the phone with the insurance company, waited at the pharmacy line, and got stuck in traffic. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the daily two-hour commute to and from school. I think this is why it’s a known fact that caregivers age quickly, are typically unhealthy, and then die early.
I came home to a stack of mail, which included Jolene Philo’s newest bookThe Caregiver’s Notebook: An Organizational Tool and Support to Help You Care for Others. I literally hugged it, began flipping through its pages, and then stopped when I read this verse:
Pile your troubles on God’s shouldershe’ll carry your load, he’ll help you out. He’ll never let good people topple into ruin. (Psalm 55:22, MESSAGE)
Jolene'sexperience began with her father’s illness when she was 2 years old and has continued to be the primary caregiver to several family members. Yet she is healthy, content, and at peace. She has figured out how to manage the unending demands of caregiving and has remained firmly grounded in God’s sovereign care over her. The secret? She’s sharing it with the world through her book and online how-to videos.
This revisited interview reveals how valuable this resource is for us all.

Labels are everywhere! We live in a world that labels everything from coffee cups and clothing to food ingredients and designer fashions.
While labels are helpful for certain things, they can be incredibly damaging when they define peopletheir value, character, or significance.
Change must begin to take place. So, where do we begin? We begin by learning how to love without labels.
Few people understand this better than Barbara Newman. For more than 30 years, Barbara has provided education, inspiration, and transformation for churches and families typically disregarded by society. It is easyto place significant value on what one does, how one looks, where one lives, what one drives, or what one wearsall dependent on what we deem valuable. And when it comes to those who are differentthose labeled as diseased, deformed, disabled, depressed, poor, weaktheir lives are most often disregarded. Candidly, such attitudes and actions are thoroughly divergent from Christ’s model and teaching.Tragically, the church is not exempt from attaching labels.
I am convinced that if Christ and the disciples attended a church today, they would be looked down upon because of their appearance, what they did, where they lived, and what they said. Stop and think about it for a moment. Isaiah even said there was nothing externally impressive about Christ, but Christ came because He views all of us as priceless, unconditionally loved, so significant that He died for us.
We hope this interview that Colleen and Barbara shared in 2014 encouragesyou to examine where labels might exist in your life and in your church and how we can, as Christ's body, move beyond condemning labels.

How many times have we heard someone say, God has a wonderful plan for your life? I stopped counting years ago; maybe you have, too. Reconciling the truth that God’s plan for our lives is good when all we are experiencing is pain can cause tremendous confusion.
After all, Scripture emphatically says: Jesus came that you may have life, and have it abundantly (John 10:10). When we seek Him we will find Him (see Jeremiah 29:13). We are to draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16).
During those difficult times, we have to release what we assumed to be true and, instead, embrace with accuracy what God’s Word actually means. John and Lynn Hampton spent years reframing their understanding of how God can be goodin spite of His allowing painful circumstances in life. As we revisit this dialogue shared between Colleen and the Hampton couple in 2016, we hope it encourages you in whatever season of pain you are walking through.
