School attendances in Northern Ireland over the past two years have been the worst on record. In both the 2021/22 and 2022/23 school years, about 30% of pupils had absence rates classed at "chronic" or "severe chronic". That is according to figures provided by the Department of Education (DE). The rate of persistent absence among pupils in Northern Ireland it is much higher than the officially reorded absences in Schools in England and Wales. There are likely to be a range of reasons for the high absence rates, including: The long-term effect of school closures during lockdowns The rise in mental health issues among young people Problems some children have getting support services Some principals have also identified more pupils with emotionally-based school avoidance, which is linked to mental health and wellbeing. A break from activity during which people drink coffee, eat cakes or other light snacks, and relax with others. Fika is a concept, a state of mind, an attitude and an important part of Swedish culture that I discovered when on an Erasmus trip to Stockholm. Many Swedes consider that it is almost essential to make time for fika every day. You can do it alone, you can do it with friends. You can do it at home, in a park or at work. But the essential thing is that you do it, that you make time to take a break, that's what fika is all about! So my Podcast is my Fika Time, my break from activity! The word is an inverted syllable slang term derived from “kaffi,” the 19th century word for coffee. It's pretty simple: Invert the word kaffi, and you get fika. A growing body of evidence suggests the learning crisis is, at its core, a teaching crisis. For students to learn, they need good teachers—but many education systems pay little attention to what teachers know, and prescribe rigidly what they do in the classrooms.
