Every person's experience with mental illness is unique. Dr. Kevin Brown is a psychiatrist who interviews people who have overcome or are dealing with mental illness and trauma. The goal of the podcast is to learn about psychiatric illness by talking to people who have experienced it from their perspectives.
Robert Jones | Exonerated after 23 years in prison and the path to overcoming obstacles.
Robert Jones was wrongly convicted and imprisoned for 23 years at the Louisiana State Penitentiary (Angola) for multiple crimes including murder, kidnapping, robbery and assault that he never committed.  While imprisoned he got his GED, taught himself law, and later with this aid of The Innocence Project of New Orleans he was fully exonerated in 2017. While in prison he developed his own system for becoming mentally tough and overcoming obstacles in the face of tremendous adversity.  Robert is also a motivational speaker, author, publisher, client advocate for the Orleans Public Defender’s office and co-founder of the Free-Dem Foundations of New Orleans to mentor at-risk youth.  He was featured on episode #1714 of The Joe Rogan Experience.  His books Unbreakable Resolve can be found on Amazon and The True Power of Endurance can be found at: rbkpublishing.org. Kristene Chapa | Shot in the head, left for dead, and the long road to recovery.
Kristene Chapa is an assault survivor, disabilities rights advocate, and LGBTQ activist.  In June of 2012 Kristene and her girlfriend Mollie Olgin were violently assaulted at gunpoint, shot execution style in the head, and left for dead.  Their story made national news as they appeared to be a target of a hate crime.  Mollie tragically died and while Kristene survived, she had to relearn to walk, talk, and eat.  Kristene remains permanently disabled with limited vision, hearing loss, and is partially paralyzed on the left side of her body.  In addition to her physical injuries, Kristene also continues to struggle with PTSD and anxiety.  Against all odds, Kristene has continued to recover physically and emotionally along with the help of her family and her fiancé Alondra “Alo” Nevarez.  Kristene is the subject of the 2022 documentary - Left for Dead: The Kristene Chapa Story and the forthcoming book - The Wind Blew Through Us: Love, Murder, and Justice in Texas. Follow Dr. Brown and Real Psych Talk at Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/realpsychtalk/Twitter: https://twitter.com/realpsychtalk

Daniel Rodriguez | Decorated Army veteran and former Clemson football player talks PTSD
Daniel Rodriguez is a decorated Army veteran, former Clemson Tiger football player, musician and actor. Daniel served in combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and survived the Battle of Kamdesh in which his entire combat outpost was overrun by 400 Taliban militants. His best friend and fellow soldier Kevin Thomson died at his side defending Daniel.  Daniel later received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Valor for his heroic efforts in Afghanistan. He also fulfilled a promise he made to Kevin Thomson and played college football for the Clemson Tigers. Daniel struggled with PTSD and depression for years after his military service and continues to recover. Daniel’s best selling autobiography is entitled: Rise: A Soldier, A Dream, and a Promise Kept. Zion Clark | Overcoming adversity in the foster care system
