I wish this was a better podcast, but it just comes out as two book people who don’t have enough experience in this specific genre teeheeing their way through without paying much respect or consideration to a legitimate genre of work. There’s no attempt at background research, and the missteps when it comes to treating the very thorny topic of women’s erotic literature makes it borderline unlistenable. Do better.

This podcast is frankly a delight and something I look forward to showing up in my feed. As a romance and erotica reader, it has been so validating to hear conversations about why these genres are often minimized even when so many people love them (hint: the patriarchy, heteronormativity, etc.). The book discussions are also a blast and have introduced me to some new authors and sub-genres. Brea and Mallory are as insightful as they are hilarious, and I’m grateful for my little virtual book club in my ear every couple weeks.

I followed the ladies here from Reading Glasses, and this podcast cracks me up on the regular.

I’ve only listened to a couple of episodes but I really like this conversation on smut/romance. The genre is the highest selling year after year and yet it’s usually dismissed and belittled. A lot of the other podcasts in this space treat it as a silly little fun jaunt (which it can be and to an extent should be), but I like that they look at the context in culture, the author’s intentions, that it can be a meaningful outlet for different communities, that it takes a lot of creativity to write about topics that can feel incredibly cringey if not done right. It feels like actual adults talking about adult topics and approaching it seriously. I like that there’s a place for exploration into the silliness of these books without feeling like it’s mocking the genre.

Your book recommendations are always so good. For the first time since I started listening, I decided to read along for Merry Little Meet Cute. I loved it and was pleasantly surprised that the author is also a Kansas City native. Thank you for helping me discover a local author!

Beforehand, I pretty much avoided it due to insipid plots and lack of ‘spice’ and no one else to talk to about this in a meaningful way. With the awesome interviews and great reading suggestions I have enjoyed every episode and look forward to more! Check this out if you’re thinking romance books could be interesting but just not sure where to start or find the right ones for you!

I love this podcast! I have l enjoyed the discussions on the books and the culture surrounding them. I especially enjoyed the discussions about why so many people read smut and what is popular. If you like books and book-culture, you will love this podcast. I don’t think you need to be a huge reader of the genre to enjoy these episodes.

I’m not even a huge smut reader (I dabble), but I still love this podcast and actually have picked up more smut-lit because of it. I’ve listened to Mallory and Brea for years on their other podcast (Reading Glasses) and I love their vibe—warm, nonjudgmental, supportive, positive, curious, and enthusiastic. I immediately followed them to this new podcast (always down for more content from these two), and I wasn’t disappointed.
