Reactive Attachments
#ReactiveAttachmentsPodcast I started this podcast as a companion to the #RAD caregiver support group. Caregivers struggling to be believed, wrestling with regret and the many complexities of attachment. Putting the truth, pain and remorse in context, with the goal of expanding the conversations about our strained lives, marriages, careers, reputations, and sanity. Let’s dive in to these topics together!
Reactive Attachment Disorder and Marriage
Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) can have a significant impact on the marriage of caregivers of children who are adopted. RAD is a condition that arises from a lack of appropriate attachment or bonding between a child and their caregiver during their early years of development. Children with RAD may have difficulty forming healthy and secure relationships with their caregivers, and this can lead to a range of emotional and behavioral problems. The stress and challenges of caring for a child with RAD can take a toll on the marriage of caregivers. Caregivers may experience significant emotional, physical, and financial stress as they work to manage the behaviors and needs of a child with RAD. This can lead to feelings of frustration, exhaustion, and even resentment towards one another. Caregivers may also experience conflict or disagreement over how to best care for a child with RAD. For example, one partner may want to take a more permissive approach to managing behaviors, while the other may want to set stricter boundaries. These differences in parenting styles can lead to tension and conflict between partners, and can further exacerbate the stress and strain on the marriage. Moreover, caring for a child with RAD can take a significant amount of time and attention, leaving little room for the partners to prioritize their own relationship. The emotional and physical demands of caregiving can leave caregivers feeling drained and emotionally disconnected from one another. This can further strain the relationship and lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness. It is important for caregivers to seek support and resources to help manage the challenges of caring for a child with RAD. This may include therapy or counseling for the child, as well as support groups and respite care for caregivers. It is also important for partners to prioritize their relationship and to make time for each other, even in the midst of the demands of caregiving. Seeking out couples therapy or other forms of support can also be helpful in managing the impact of RAD on the marriage.
