2023 HIMSS Recap
Ken and Tyler sit down with Peter Squire, Mel Gamble and Caitlin Nolan to dicuss their takeaways from HIMSS 2023. They had a great time in Chicago and thoroughly enjoyed the content and location. In addition to catching up with other team members, they were able to attend the happy hour event that HDM hosted along with Health Catalyst as well as the Northern and Southern California HIMSS chapters.  It should be no surprise that AI was the biggest takeaway from HIMSS.  The HIMSS Global Health Conference in Chicago brought together healthcare professionals, executives, and engineers to discuss advancements in healthcare technology. Major companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon showcased their new health applications for AI. Generative AI, which allows programs to generate text or images from complicated prompts, was a popular topic at the conference. Microsoft's David Rhew believes generative AI can be "transformative" for solving healthcare challenges, but advocates for starting with low-risk uses such as streamlining administrative tasks. Developing diagnostic or patient-facing generative AI applications pose regulatory challenges that need to be worked through. Rhew compares the introduction of AI to healthcare to introducing a car without stop signs, traffic lights, or roads.
