Quick Hits are 10-minute conversations designed to exercise your brain by letting you listen in on an unscripted conversation to hear other people‘s thoughts on a variety of subjects. In February of 2021 I and the members of my mastermind group thought other people might enjoy listening in on some of the lively conversations we were having. But we realized that no one was going spend 90-minutes listening to us going on about anything and sometimes nothing. Instead, we decided to pick one topic and have a short conversation to share. I took the reigns because facilitating those types of conversations sounded like fun. Over the course of a few months it grew from just members of our mastermind group to four (sometimes three if schedules go sideways) people from various parts of the world and from ”short” to exactly 10-minutes. Thus was born ”Quick Hits” hosted by me, Dr Robyn. I hope to get caught up with posting them here on PodBean at some point. As of this writing, I have over 100 ”episodes.” If you‘d like to see the videos of these conversations, they are available on my YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/DrRobynQuickHits If you have a topic you‘d like to hear discussed, I encouraged you to use the contact page of my website: https://drrobynodegaard.com/ to let me know.
What is reality - really?
When I do talks and trainings on communication and conflict resolution I like to tell this joke: "What is the difference between perception and reality? Perception is what you think. Reality is what I think."  It's funny because it's true. Is reality just an agreed upon perception? Listen in as Brea Sorrells, Atif Agha, Rick Alcantara, and I grapple with the nebulousness that is "reality." Is providing references a breach of trust to existing clients?
In many industries it is common practice to ask for and receive contact information to talk to existing customers. I have done it myself in the past. Even though I did my "due diligence" the guy turned out to be a huckster. Calling his references was a waste of time. In my business clients have 100% confidentiality. That means I don't ask them to be references for me - ever (That doesn't mean they aren't allowed to talk about our work. Many of them do and send referrals.) I asked Bill Lindquist (small biz owner), Kristin G. Bainger (exec coach) and Brian Cousin (lawyer) their thoughts on giving references. The conversation was enlightening. Is it ever inappropriate to give feedback?
Feedback can be seen as advice giving or it could be welcomed as helpful. We didn't get into it in this conversation but I think mansplaining (whether done by a man or a woman) certainly falls into the inappropriate feedback category. Listen in as Brandon Mahoney, Simon Coles, Stewart Wiggins and I have this conversation that came on the back of How to get productive feedback (I'll link that one in the comments). How to get productive feedback
When you are looking to get better at something, the least useful but easiest thing for someone to say is, "You're really great!" I asked Brandon Mahoney, Simon Coles and Stewart Wiggins how they got people to provide useful feedback and learned there are some cultural differences. When are you most likely to help someone grow versus stroking their ego? How to tell if someone is trying to gaslight you
The original topic for this Quick Hits was, How to leave room that you could be wrong without allowing someone to gaslight you. We quickly realized that a healthy psyche usually leaves a little space for remembering something incorrectly or being mistaken. We also talked about how feelings come into play. Listen in as Ania Jarmulowicz, Tim Hawkes and I talk through the complexity of this topic. Then I'd love to hear what you think. How do you avoid allowing someone to gaslight you? What is the difference between a manager and a leader?
This point comes up A LOT in Quick Hits conversations. The basic assumption is that mangers are about getting tasks done. Leaders are more strategic. If you're good at tasks can you become a leader? Can you be a leader and not understand the tasks? Listen in as Stewart Wiggins, Amanda Olivo Ulichny, Matthew Douthit and I talk through our thoughts and experience with the topic. How do you know if you‘re lying to yourself?
Self-delusion is hard to catch because, by it's very nature, we have no idea we are doing it.  When I asked Matthew Douthit, Amanda Olivo Ulichny, and Stewart Wiggins this question we came to the conclusion that getting and accepting outside feedback was critical. That is easier said than done. Listen in as we talk through our thoughts on the subject, then let us know what comes up for you. What is an ”authentic” conversation and how do you create one?
Too often it seems like we are talking passed each other. Whether people are on different sides of a topic or simply too distracted to actually listen, conversations can feel fake, shallow and even useless. I invited Philip Tate and James Lee to have a conversation (which felt authentic to me) about how we might create real communication and connection.   To learn about the panelists, please visit their LinkedIn profile: Philip Tate: https://www.linkedin.com/in/philiptateaprfellowprsa/James Lee: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jleeadvisor/ Dr Robyn Odegaard: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robynodegaard/   #QuickHits are designed to exercise your brain by letting you listen in on an unscripted conversation to get other people's thoughts on various subjects. Is it ever okay to swear in a professional setting?
This is a hot topic particularly in women's entrepreneur groups. Some say they will talk however they $%*&@ want and other say cursing is never acceptable in a professional setting.   I invited Sara Oblak Speicher, Andrew Baharlias and Tiffany DuBois-Morales to discuss. Do you agree with our conclusion?   To learn about the panelists, please visit their LinkedIn profiles: Sara Oblak Speicher: https://www.linkedin.com/in/saraospeicher/ Andrew Baharlias: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-baharlias-6b3a216/ Tiffany Dubois-Morales: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tiffany-dubois-morales-9b603137/ Dr Robyn Odegaard: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robynodegaard/     #QuickHits are designed to exercise your brain by letting you listen in on an unscripted conversation to get other people's thoughts on various subjects. Why are there so many lousy leaders?
If leadership could be learned from a book, a seminar, a webinar or a workshop the world should be FULL of amazing leaders. That simply isn't the case.   I invited Kristin Bainger and Stewart Wiggins to share their insights into why that is happening and how an individual might become a good leader in spite of the mountain of less than ideal instruction available.   To learn about the panelist, please visit their LinkedIn profiles: Kristin Bainger: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kristin-g-bainger-she-her-6aa5866/ Stewart Wiggins: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stewart-wiggins/ Dr Robyn Odegaard: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robynodegaard/   #QuickHits are designed to exercise your brain by letting you listen in on an unscripted conversation to get other people's thoughts on various subjects.
