Currently, women represent less than 14% of sworn officers and 20% of recruits in state and local law enforcement agencies (Source: Bureau of Justice Statistics).In the video above, Sheriff McFadden outlines the Bureau Of Justice Assistance's 30X30 Initiative, which aims for law enforcement agencies to be made up of at least 30 percent women by the year 2030. MCSO has already surpassed that number. Sheriff breaks down the numbers within the agency and encourages other law enforcement agencies to follow suit.

MCSO News 45: 1 Year Goes By With No In-Custody Deaths at Detention Center
March 28, 2025 marked a significant milestone for staff at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center. It's been a full year since MCSO has had an in-custody death. MCSO would like to attribute this success to the hard work of its Detention Center staff and its new medical provider, Vital Core Health Strategies. Although residents often enter the facility with underlying illnesses, Sheriff McFadden says he will remain committed to reducing the number of in-custody deaths at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.

MCSO News 45: New law reverses ‘Raise the Age’, Sheriff ensures safety of juveniles
House Bill 834 went into effect Dec. 1st of 2024 after Republican lawmakers overrode Governor Cooper's veto. This law repeals "Raise The Age", legislation that was passed in 2019 that states juveniles ages 16 and 17 who commit serious crimes in North Carolina are no longer charged as an adult. However, that has since been reversed under HB 834. Now, juveniles would be charged as adults to Superior Court for serious felony offenses. In the video above, Sheriff Garry McFadden lays out what this means for juveniles who are processed into the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and ensures families that all juveniles will be safe and secure while in custody.
