There’s an episode here about Narcissistic Personality and you guys are fighting on air. It’s so funny. 🤣

Do no harm
I recently discovered your podcast and, after listening to a couple of episodes, found myself looking forward to listening to more. I appreciate the effort to make psychology and mental health topics accessible to a broader audience. That’s why I was particularly surprised when I came across the episodes on conversion disorder / Functional Neurological Disorder (FND).
What puzzled me most was the lens through which FND was discussed. Many of the things you describe as suspicious (multiple consultations, extensive records, wanting validation, frustration after negative tests, continuing to search for answers, etc.) can also be what you would expect from someone living with unresolved or disabling symptoms. FND is one of the more common presentations in outpatient neurology, not a rare fringe issue. And seeing multiple providers does not automatically mean “doctor shopping.” Often, patients are sent from primary care or neurology to psychiatry, neuropsychology, PT, OT, speech therapy, or specialty clinics because the symptoms are complex and cross systems.
What concerned me most was how often the discussion drifted from FND into language that sounds much closer to malingering or factitious disorder: “doing their homework,” “feigning,” “secondary gain,” seeking disability, seeking sympathy, wanting to be the “special case.” That seems difficult to reconcile with the acknowledgment that patients are genuinely experiencing their symptoms. Malingering can happen, of course, but it is a separate issue involving intentional deception. Neither FND nor any other condition should be treated as malingering-adjacent by default. The possibility of deception may belong in a careful differential in specific contexts, but it should not become the interpretive lens through which an entire patient population is discussed.
I also think the discussion risks confusing consequences of illness with causes of illness. Sympathy, accommodations, disability benefits, or relief from responsibilities may sometimes follow illness, but that does not mean they explain why the illness exists. A person may bring a binder of records because they have spent months or even years being passed between specialists. They may seek validation because losing the ability to walk, speak, work, or function while being told “nothing is wrong” is profoundly destabilizing.
To me, the thread running through the discussion is a shift from mechanism to motive. Instead of asking how real symptoms are being generated, it repeatedly asks what the patient might be getting out of them. I also noticed that much of the conversation was framed around “conversion disorder,” while the field has increasingly moved toward the FND framework because it better captures a real disorder of nervous-system functioning without reducing it to presumed psychological motive or character pathology.
I hope you’ll consider revisiting this topic through that more current lens. I also think there is a responsibility, when speaking from a position of expertise, to distinguish clearly between established evidence, personal clinical impressions, and areas where the field has evolved or remains complex. Much of the discussion was presented with a high degree of certainty, even when describing what appeared to be personal observations rather than settled conclusions about FND. Comments about “doctor shopping,” “feigning,” “secondary gain,” or personality pathology carry real weight when they come from a clinician. Without that clarification, listeners may come away thinking those ideas reflect the current understanding of FND as a whole, rather than one interpretation. That influence matters, especially for a condition that is already so stigmatized and misunderstood.

Don’t listen to them
You guys having intellectual dishonesty makes me laugh! Denying whole genocide and standing for zios shows you guys are not serious about people’s mental health!

Lost me at the pro Israel advocacy
Let’s be honest, October 7th is nuanced. Why bring up pro Israel views in a show. No necessary.

Have been listening for awhile but
To be honest, I enjoyed this podcast. I like that it’s not completely structured and covers a good range of topics.. but the last few episodes, I haven’t been able to get past the way he speaks to his wife. It is infuriating. He’s very dismissive, and egocentric. Maybe even narcissistic.

Borderline
Borderline is being discussed more and more at AA meetings.. finally shining a spotlight on a prevalent disorder that’s completely treatable with proper testing and guidance. Truly life changing with Corey and Julie!

My patients and I thank you
This is the supervision I wish I had had when I was a baby PMHNP. I just can’t get enough, and now I’ve started to listen to all of the Psychology Unplugged episodes from the beginning. I have worked inpatient, outpatient, corrections, and OBOT, and I am still learning.
Thank you, and keep ‘em coming.

Beware: Zionists
Glad I didn’t start this podcast before reading the reviews. Apparently Dr. Corey and his wife are Zionists who refuse to acknowledge the Palestinian genocide. Truly an embarrassment to the Jewish people, myself included.

Really want to like this
This show would be amazing if the wife would stop interrupting and adding her opinions and views. She should start her own podcast.

Amazing information
Dr. Nigro is a most amazing “giver” to the world of psychology. I’ve been binging to the point of going through his library. I learn so much about simply everything psychological. He brings in what’s happening to the brain, science and facts, so you can understand your mind. Might be the best doctor on psychiatry’s basics and with deep level of intense learning. Thank you Dr. Nigro for being part of a healthy community of people who struggle. Best, Marybeth

Appalled by Israel/Palestine Commentary
As an American Jew, I am appalled by Julie doubling down on Israeli State propaganda (for a second time) on the latest “Emotional Dysregulation” episode. The first one aired July 27th 2025 and the second aired September 7th. Why am I still listening lol ! I was waiting for the hosts to maybe correct themselves. Recycling Netanyahu’s propaganda does not help the Jewish people. Julie takes a stand for the state of Israel without any mention (yet again) of the genocide in Gaza.
I even researched the Israelis Julie recommends listening to… Cliff Weitzman offers nothing new to the conversation.
If you have a mental health platform, it’s your responsibility to be as objective as possible about something so emotionally dysregulating for people.
Speaking out against what’s happening in Gaza is not supporting hamas and it’s NOT antisemitism.
This is a dangerous conflation. Is anti semitism real? Yes. Is the State of Israel committing genocide? Yes.
Julie mentioned she didn’t want to “get political” and that she’s “not a historian.” She’s not even Jewish apparently. Stay in your lane please. Choosing to only speak about one side IS a political act. A single sentence acknowledging the suffering in Gaza would have been the bare minimum.
Please do better Julie and Corey. I pray that future episodes will show more awareness, for your own sakes.

Keep it up!
Great information! As a student in psychology I would highly recommend listening to this for great insights!

Longtime listener leaving
Enjoyed the content for a longtime; however, the opinions the hosts shared on Gaza showed a lack of critical thinking and biases I can’t ignore.

Ending July 27 show with propaganda
Very disappointing to listen to the woman at the end of the show spewing Zionist propaganda. Grateful, however, to learn this so I will unfollow the show and never listen to it again. I don’t trust anything that comes out of a Zionist’s, aka a white supremacist’s, mouth. Period.

Politics NO
I was enjoying until the July 27th podcast where the wife stated that “we stand with Israel”. Your ideas on politics should be avoided on your podcasts and much more in medicine.

Emotional dysregulation episode
I’ve been listening to this podcast for YEARS. And have listened to almost every single episode. At the end of the episode released on 7/27/25 Julie went off about talking about how she stands with Israel and she wants peace. I also want peace but to not acknowledge the suffering and starvation of people in Gaza was a bit shocking. I think that all people have a right to exist and get their basic needs met, which I thought the producers of this podcast did too. I’m disappointed and not sure if I’ll keep listening.

Physician, heal thyself.
I used to enjoy this show as it shared the messy reality of our minds, often balancing competing forces that we all have and offering perspective. I can’t for the life of me believe that trained providers would, in that same breath extolling nuance and perspective, then put forth to a general audience that they should stand with Israel and understand their point of view uniquely.
That 20000 dead children later, an engineered famine, and a now open campaign of ethnic cleansing - no other perspective is needed, not when it comes to a state run by wanted war criminals, where mainstream TV channels advocate openly in Hebrew and English for dropping nuclear bombs, annihilating an entire population, and mock starving children.
Worst of all, tying an Israeli identity to Jewishness from the platform of a provider is diabolical - there are thousands if not millions of Americans suffering from watching the images of amputated children, fathers picking up the remains of their babies in plastic bags, and entire families wiped out while queuing for water - should they second guess their Jewish provider now? Are they even worthy of care? Or should we forget about them like the million children in Gaza as an unfortunate cost of safety for one group and one group only.

The woman in charge is evil
I like the show except when the woman gets on. The narration is going well and then she has to cut in. She ruined the show tonight interrupting the whole session to talk about I stand with Israel against evil and now I’m all triggered. 10000 children in the first 90 days. She’s extreme and all things I don’t want to be.

Wonderful podcast
I just wish he would tell us what Julie is chopping in the background! I never actually hear any chopping but I always wonder what she is making when he tells her to stop.
As someone who is also passionate about certain band, I love your love of Springsteen. I sincerely hope that someday you get to meet him.

Thank you
So very helpful…. Can you add a segment to each episode for people who are trying to cope with a loved one’s illness. How to react, what to say, what not to say, and how we can support them if they do not get the help they need. And how to save our own sanity…

Very interesting and educational show!
I love this podcast and appreciate the information the hosts impart. HOWEVER, The background noise needs to go. I sometimes find it hard to hear what is being said due to the ambient noise that overwhelms the speakers.

Painful and unprofessional
The stammering and off-topic Trump bashing made this truly unbearable to listen to. He needs a script….and what’s with the pots clanging in the background?
CrimePodcastJunkie
Too much judgement, misinformation, and clinician bias.
Saying “There IS NO unconscious” is such a hot take in our field, and lay individuals need to know that the majority of well trained psychologists do not agree with this statement. Even CBT clinicians with advanced training will not agree with this. That’s like saying “a repetition compulsion is an entirely volitional process”; it suggests the survivor of physical abuse in one relationship, and then finding themselves in 6 subsequent relationships with abusers is entirely a volitional and conscious occurrence. Those choices are 100% “on them”despite the stupidity of those decisions. To convey this as a clinician is invalidating at best and harmful at worst. I could go on but I’ll stop here with the issues I have with some of the content.
However, I admire Nigro’s energy and commitment to this pod. He clearly cares about putting out content as a service to his community. Further, he has a good understanding of psychopathy, at least from a clinical criteria standpoint, despite his apparent over-importance of these psychiatric labels (which tells in nothing about our personal stories) and the over reliance of, borderline fantastical thinking about, the absolute necessity of obtaining a neuropsychological evaluation. If a clinician can’t determine a diagnosis of a common syndrome (major depression, social anxiety etc) with a cost effective clinical interview, but must rely on test findings that cost literally 1000s and 1000s of dollars, then the clinician might consider another profession.

Disappointed
After hearing the phrase “I don’t know what that word/phrase means but <insert opinion>” I lost faith in the credibility of the speaker. If you want to talk about a subject that you know nothing about, you do your due diligence before starting that conversation. Since that didn’t happen, I was only left with the realization that the topic wasn’t actually being discussed and was instead the vehicle for a personal rant rooted in lack of understanding and active desire maintain that lack of understanding. In order to form a respectable opinion on something challenging, one has to be willing to meet that challenge with an open mind in order to take in new information and balance that into a well -informed opinion, whether or not I agree with it. Resistance to change and new ideas is tough but it’s how we approach that challenge that really shows our integrity. That integrity was lacking.

I tried…
Like many here, I too tried to listen and give the podcast a chance to develop and progress. However, the unprofessional rants and political and religious talk make it hard to take seriously. We all have our opinions, biases, and views but if you’re going to make an educational psychology podcast leave the “witty” banter and personal views out. I am hoping Dr. Nigro will take some of these reviews to heart and the podcast will improve. I’ll come back later…

Silverware?
What is this guy doing, cleaning his silverware while he talks? So distracting. I can hardly focus on what he’s saying. Seems like he gets distracted himself as well.

Why the politics?
I was getting into the show, and then he went anti-Trump for some reason. It was totally unnecessary. What a hypocrite this guy is.

A must listen!
This is a great podcast to have on hand for quick listening. I enjoy having topics that educates me while I’m doing whatever it is I’m doing. Not only that, but today’s podcast has impacted me in a very positive and inspiring way. Thank you Dr. Nigro and Julie. Having a “safe place” to influence my mind and keep me grounded while I’m not seeing a therapist is incredible. Thank you thank you thank you for doing the work you do. I appreciate you. I’m going to go make dinner now, because I get to! I shall be reflecting about how lucky I’m feeling to have the ability to cook a meal for my family. Definitely a podcast everyone should explore. An easy decision!

Hard to listen to
The topics all look interesting, but I find the delivery so frustrating. Feels as if he sits down to record with only a general idea but no notes. Digressive, repetitive, lots of verbal tics, disorganized.

Interesting topics, needs a little improvement in podcasting presentation.
Great topics, the background noises and podcasting style take away from it.

If I could give more stars than 5 I would
One of the most interesting and educational shows I’ve listened to. From the information he delivers to the comfort in his voice, this podcast is an all around safe space with the most incredible host and necessary information about the human brain. I continue to learn with every episode. Thank you Dr. Nigro!

I love how informative this podcast is. I’ve learned something in every episode I’ve listened. And I’ve enjoyed reading the psychology book recommendations Dr gives from time to time. Never lacking of topics

Background Noise
I wish I could rate this much higher because the content itself seems great. However, the near constant background noise (shuffling papers, hitting the mic, moving things around, etc.) is so distracting and irritating. Especially for an educational psychology podcast.

Cut the wife
Love this podcast. But the wife talking up drugs….. not what struggling people need.
..The….Only
Distracting
I actually like what he says and TRIED to listen but as mentioned by many, the background noises were just too much! Impossible to listen to with all the clanging and banging like a Cafe kitchen! It actually causes anxiety! Don't they understand how offsetting this is to people? Losing many listeners. The dishes and apples CAN WAIT until after the podcast! Or have the podcast in a DIFFERENT room with the door shut, for the love!

Good content
I've learn plenty from listening to thispodcast. How to handle situations and even how to handle individuals that suffer from mental illness. The host is great but I feel concern when his wife comes in and sometimes seems impolite.

Very Disappointing
We all have a right to our opinion, but if you choose to gain knowledge from the Conversion Disorder episode, please be careful.
The information seems to be incongruent with articles and studies I have read elsewhere. It seems to be one person’s opinion.
(And the mic quality, background noise, and the “umms and uhhs” are very distracting).
Desert Parrothead
Very educational- would love to pick his brain
I truly appreciate his perspective. I would love to hear what he hast to say about ADHD autism and FASD. these are all topics. I’m doing my thesis on. if you have any educational resources, Doc send them my way.

Get 2 mics!!!!
Ugh I want to give 5 stars but I can’t because your sound is bad with what appears 1 mic.
If you are going to have a discussion between the 2 of you be prepared. It’s like the woman just walks in and interrupts and the Dr. is annoyed.
Hairy playypus
I wish it was more structured.
I think the information is great but for such intelligent people, the “ummms” and “uhs” in between almost every word KILLS ME and takes away from the content.
Sarahbellafoster
Consistently hits the nail right on the head
Extremely educational, evidence-based and experience-based and not at all boring. Perfect mix of science, advocacy, and empathy. As a psychology undergrad who not only studies mental health and illness but also lives it, I appreciate this podcast so much. Wish Dr. Nigro was my professor. I will lean on these episodes though grad school for sure!!🫶🏽🧠🫂
