I love Propublica and the work they do, I will continue to financially support them, but the AI narration is like nails on a chalkboard.

News over Audio, the narration service propublica uses for this podcast is upfront on their website about using AI. Propublica needs to clearly state whether AI is involved in this podcast. If not, the narrator should be credited.

I don't often have time to read multi part, long form articles. I do spend lots of time in traffic. This time is also spent listening to your enlightning, thought-provoking journalism. Thank you.

Great reporting, but horrible narration. Voice acting was over the top and distracting. Just get the actual reporter to read?

Sick in a hospital town is a gut wrenching piece of journalism that holds zero punches.

After all of the “research”, author of this article did not spell the name of the county correctly or the name of the Albany mayor correctly!

Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital is ground zero of this country’s health crisis. I was hired in September of 2023 as a staff RN on a medical-surgical floor at the facility. In my 15 years as a nurse, I have never seen a more sick population than in Southwest Georgia. My colleagues are some of the most incredible nurses and CNAs you will find anywhere in the world. Therefore, the few disgruntled employees and citizens that Ginger Thompson interviewed—0.21% of the more than 5,000 employees of the system, and 0.17% of the population of Albany—shows just how biased and dishonest this “exposé” really is. I might as well have been the spokesperson she spoke of in each part of this series where she states, “ … a Phoebe spokesperson accused Pro Publica of intentionally excluding positive patient stories. Most patients have positive experiences at Phoebe, he said. Ignoring that fact is wrong. I [Ginger Thompson] interviewed more than 150 current and former residents of Albany, Georgia, as well as more than 75 current and former staff members of Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and Phoebe Putney Health System. I consulted with dozens of public health professionals, medical and legal experts, health care economists and strategists and historians.” This podcast is intentionally misleading and dishonest at best—a racial grift that doesn’t make any effort to mention the amazing people I work beside every day.

This is a fantastic investigation! I binged the whole series in one sitting. However, using multiple voice actors for this story was confusing and unnecessary. Why switch to a different voice for every quotation, especially since the primary narrator is so good and voices aren’t even intended to sound like the sources for the quotes?

I learned so much about my hometown from this podcast. Everyone here knows how bad Phoebe is from our own experiences and now we are vindicated with cold hard facts! This is why we drive out of town for specialty care instead of being seen at Phoebe. I was so involved with this podcast that I never wanted it to end! It leaves you wanting much more from this journalist!
