Welcome to this episode where we’ll be talking about a subject that doesn’t get a lot of attention out loud. It’s something we don’t discuss very often, well we don’t discuss it seriously anyway, we joke about it, share memes, decorate our homes with funny pillows celebrating it and proudly wear merch that identifies our membership in this growing club. What I’m talking about is “MOMMY NEEDS WINE CULTURE.” Today we are going to have an honest conversation with a health care professional who also identifies as a mom and has personal experience with alcohol use disorder, that was greatly exacerbated by the chaos of the post-partum period that so many moms can relate to.
Side note to our listeners: Today I will be using the terms “mom” and “mommy” because in this particular context, the conversation will revolve specifically around the “mommy needs wine” culture. We do know that dads and parents that don’t identify as “mom or mommy” also struggle with alcohol use disorder and other substance uses disorders but this specific episode and our guests specific experience revolves around identifying as a mom using the specific substance of alcohol. I hope you’ll understand exclusive nature of the language in this episode.
Content warning: we will be discussing the use of alcohol and touching on mental health disorders including suicidal ideation in very plain terms on todays podcast. If those subjects are triggering for you we ask that you please be kind to yourself and choose another one of our episodes. we are VERY excited to have with us Hannah Doyle. Hannah is a mother of two under two while working part-time as a Registered Nurse. Hannah offers insight into how alcoholism affects pregnancy, breastfeeding, and motherhood. Her personal trials with alcohol abuse help to highlight the impact alcohol can have on both motherhood and mental health from the early postpartum period to years after.
