Welcome to episode Nº 15 of Poly-Rythmo Club. We have travelled so far to various Latin American countries like Colombia, México and Brazil, and now it's turn to go further south and find the hidden gems of 80s Uruguay.
Our tour guides building the bridge between Uruguay and Spain are Javi Bayo (Madrid) and Dj Fatal (Montevideo).
Javi Bayo is a record collector and versatile DJ, responsible for “América Invertida” (Vampisoul-Little Butterfly Records, 2019) a compilation showcasing the exciting sounds of 80s Uruguay, where ethereal vocal arrangements and acoustic guitars cohabit with synthesizers and drum machines; Candombe and Latin American music form a fellowship with new wave and dream pop.
Fatal, The Montevideo born and Barcelona based selector started in the scene only 6 years ago, but due to his fine, eclectic selections, he gained recognition as one of the up-and-coming talents in South America. His most recent project, Pájaros Pintados - a homage to the Charrúa culture - comprises a series of mixtapes and aYouTube channel with obscure music from the 80s and the early 90s.
Play press and immerse yourself into a world of synth ambiences, acoustic landscapes and subtle candombe percussion. A unique sound that was developed in Montevideo by a small and collaborative community of talented musicians that were experimenting with synthesizers and drum machines. The artists featured on this episode represent the most experimental side of Uruguayan music of the 80s, blending folk with avant garde as well as acoustic with electronic sounds (Eduardo Mateo, Fernando Cabrera, Estela Magnone, Hugo Fattoruso, Leo Maslíah, Hugo Jasa, Jaime Roos and Mariana Ingold amongst others). The influence of Synth Pop, Candombe, Jazz and Brazilian music is evident on these tracks that still nowadays sound very fresh and attractive.
