270 Stories

When an EF-4 tornado struck Mayfield last December, local and national media alike raced to document the damage. The minds behind Graves County Television — the student-led video production outfit at Graves County High School more commonly known as GCTV — opted for a different approach to their coverage.

In this episode of 270 Stories, JMC 597 Collaborative Journalism Capstone students Mallory Hlava, Maggie Helms, Decorrian Walker and Gage Simpson talk with Southwest (Calloway) Elementary teacher Molly Myers about how she prepares elementary students to handle storm anxiety. Although Murray and Calloway County students were not directly affected by the EF4 tornado that roared through Graves and Marshall counties, the storm raised anxiety levels throughout the region. 

270 Stories is a podcast produced by the students enrolled in JMC 597 Collaborative Journalism Capstone at Murray State University. The premise of these podcasts is to tell a story in 270 seconds, or roughly 4.5 minutes. 270 Stories refers to the area code in which Murray State is located. Students Jillian Smith, Cady Stribling and Joey Reynolds spoke with professor Mary Tripp Reed about her thoughts of seeing the EF4 tornado damage on her hometown of Mayfield, Kentucky.
