I wasn’t the perfect middle schooler, but I was far from the worst. I always knew I would get a “good” job, have a family of my own, and be kind to others. When I was in 7th grade, playing basketball as a starter, there was an incident that happened when we were visiting another school and playing a game there. One of the girls on my team stole items from the girl's locker room we were using and I was blamed. And my coach at the time didn’t believe me when I said I didn’t do it. The words you use matter. The way you listen to others matters. Your lack of listening matters. The way you treat others matters.Because of the basketball stealing situation and not having my coach believe me, I never went to the required basketball camp that summer and I quit basketball forever, I never played again. I literally saw this girl, my “teammate” rummaging through the lockers of others, that obviously weren’t hers, I told my coach this and she didn’t believe me. Oh, by the way, that other girl, was a straight-A, goody-goody teacher’s pet …and…I wasn’t. So, of course, my coach wasn’t going to believe me.However, I didn’t do it, the other girl did and because of this I never played basketball again. We need to be careful about the words we say, the way we treat others, and our judgment of individuals because it can cloud our, well, our judgment.I always wanted to go back to that coach as an adult and tell her that I didn’t steal the items-- whatever was stolen from those lockers. See, I don’t even know what was stolen because I didn’t do it! Anyways, I wanted her to know that her judgment of me affected me more than she knows. Now, I am not saying this coach is a horrible person, absolutely not. She thought the “perfect” student would never make a poor decision and that the “not perfect” student would. I am using this story as a way to share that we need to lift others up and show up for others, even those people who we don’t feel deserve it. Being present for others, especially those who are struggling is far better than only showing up for those who are deemed worthy. You have the opportunity to show up, educate, help, and support those around you. Every person you meet in life you are meeting for a reason. You have the power to change their entire life. You have the option to be present and act, or not. Showing up and serving others is an act we have to take, it takes action to change the trajectory of someone’s life, even our own.Your life isn’t going to morph into the life you want it to just by chance. You get to create it. But that also means you have to create it.Figuring out what your true passions and purpose is in life is the greatest gift of all. Life is way too short to live a life of mundane. I want you to feel that fire in your soul. It is never too late to dream and to follow those dreams. What is it that you want? What has been on your mind lately? What is God putting in your heart and on your mind? Go after those! If you loved this podcast and you are feeling encouraged and ready to tackle your life + finances, would you do me a favor and share it with 3-5 of your friends? What would happen if you or your significant other lost your job, or you had a medical emergency, or a premature baby that needs to have a lengthy stay in the NICU, or a natural disaster ruined part of your house, how about if you were in a car accident and your car needed a bunch of body work done to it, or it just needed some repairs like mine did a few months ago that cost me $4,000. How about if your credit card was stolen or your identity and you needed to use cash on hand to pay for things? Are you prepared financially to handle some of these emergencies that could arise?Well in today’s podcast episode, we are going to talk about how to plan for a crisis situation and how to manage your money during emergencies or disasters. Having an emergency fund, simply a savings account of 3-6 months' worth of expenses, to be used ONLY in case of an emergency is the gold standard. I suggest having at least 6 months because I like to err on the side of caution. I played "Farmer" one spring and paid off $100,000 of debt in less than 2 years. It was the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was "furloughed" from my nursing job, my 3 young boys were home with us 24/7 doing "virtual schooling", and my husband was recovering from emergency back surgery. We had to plant our crops since my husband farms, and since he couldn't do that, I was voted to be the farmer that year since I was off of work during this time. I had a lot of time sitting in that tractor, driving it, planting the crops, and I realized we had $100,000 of debt that we needed to pay off. I went back to work as a nurse, and worked all the overtime I could get, which was a lot since I was a nurse and it was during the peak of the pandemic. We came up with a plan and paid off our debt in less than 2 years. During this journey I realized that I wanted to be true to myself and grow as a person. I want you to come up with a plan for your life, not just money-related, but let’s be honest, money is related to almost everything we do, so we can’t leave it out. I want you to follow your dreams, but most adults have stopped dreaming. What are your dreams? What do you want to do with your life? Do you want to stay at home to raise your babies or build your own empire? Do you want to go back to school or go after that promotion at work? Do you want to live where you are currently or do you want to move? Maybe you want to sell your home, buy an RV, and travel all over the United States. We only have one life to live, so I want you to make it as good as possible. No more settling and living a life you are supposed to live. I want you to create the life you WANT to live. But with that, you need to do it responsibly. If you loved this podcast and you are feeling encouraged and ready to tackle your life + finances, would you do me a favor and share it with 3-5 of your friends?
