Foot care has evolved in recent years beyond simply removing your shoes during exercise. A building-from-the-ground-up approach can benefit your client's program and provide cues that help them connect more deeply with each exercise. Emily Splichal, DPM, offers advice on gym footwear, integrates sensory training, and explains how personal trainers can incorporate various foot-care approaches.Walking as an AssessmentAn overlooked but essential part of a well-balanced training program is your feet. Your feet have receptors that provide the brain with sensory information and are an integral part of your gait. From an instructor's perspective, observing a client's gait and how they interact with their environment from step to step can provide insight into any existing imbalances. Walking is essential to human interaction, and improving this primary function can benefit all populations. Many fitness instructors use walking as an assessment to build a client's overall profile and begin developing a program. Integrating Sensory TrainingAnother area discussed in this episode is sensory training. As Dr. Splichal noted, especially at the highest performance level, personal trainers seek effective ways to deliver even minor improvements for their clients. Sensory training, which helps improve movement pathways, can be incorporated into most exercises and offers a unique training method that clients enjoy. For example, using the NABOSO Textured Grip Socks during a deadlift can help the client feel more connected to the ground and stimulate the soles of the feet, which may have been inhibited by a long day of walking in socks and shoes. These training adjustments are unique and are discussed in detail by Dr. Splichal throughout this episode.Who is Dr. Emily SplichalDr. Splichal is a podiatrist by trade and a world-renowned fitness educator for the last twenty years.
