And for the main content of this episode...It's Sauna season and I thought this show might be a great introduction to the cultural traditions of Sauna from the far north of Scandinavia and it's migration to the Upper Midwest of North America. I've put together a beautiful introduction to Sauna from many voices sharing their traditions, stories & folklore. Enjoy!“My sauna cabin is primitive, one step removed from the first excavations in the hillsides of Finland. I wanted it that way for I felt it must be close to the earth, so much a part of the natural environment that simple values would not be lost… Simplicity is the keynote, but when steam rises from the stones and the sprays of steam and give off their fragrance, the sauna comes into its own.” -Sigurd Olson, Runes of the NorthLearn more about this episode, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here >- - -Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find. It's that time of year to make some hay for the winter so we thought it would be a good idea to get into the weeds of making hay on a small-scale traditionally by hand. This episode is for all the folks who don't have the land or tractor to make hay on a larger scale, but want to mow their lawns, fields or meadows to make hay or bedding for their animals. In this episode, you can learn about different types of grass hay, alfalfa hay & tree hay for nutrients for livestock and of course, the methods of taking up a scythe and learning one of man’s oldest agricultural arts: cutting hay by hand and storing it loose for the winter. Hear from folks like Anarchy Acres, Jim Kovaleski, Tap o' Noth Permaculture Farm & more. Hope you enjoy!"Let us make hay while the sun shines." - Proverb"If I'm honest, the thing I am proudest of is my varieties of wild flowers in the hay meadow." - Monty Don"A Song of the good green grass! A song no more of the city streets; A song of farms - a song of the soil of fields. In this episode we are honoring the work & life of Michael Phillips, the 'beyond-organic' holistic orchardist, teacher, writer & consultant, who recently passed away. The audio in this episode is from the "Successful Biological Orcharding" workshop Michael facilitated in an organic apple orchard grown by Pat Tompkins. There is much wisdom to learn from Michael's lifelong legacy connecting with the biological world. To support Michael's work and his family, visit their memorial page here > Thank you! We hope you enjoy the nutrient-dense biological wisdom Michael has to share! As above, so below. As below, so above. A diverse plant community bound by an array of mycorrhizal fungal species will form a 'common root being' throughout the orchard. The trees produce healthy fruit in accord with how we revere this sacred soil partnership. - Michael PhillipsLearn more about this episode, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here >Growing 'organic' has always been a given. Understanding how Nature does health fascinates me to no end. Working with biology and nutrition produces flavorful apples that are good for us. Compare that to the visually-pleasing orbs produced by toxic chemistry. That I choose not to certify our farm as organic with the USDA makes for good discussion over a glass of cider. Check out my network grower profile to better understand what a holistic orchardist does to bless up this earth. - Michael PhillipsMichael Phillips was a farmer, writer, carpenter, orchard consultant, and speaker. He lived with his wife, Nancy, and daughter, Grace, on Heartsong Farm in northern New Hampshire, growing apples and a variety of medicinal herbs. Michael is the author of Mycorrhizal Planet, The Apple Grower (Chelsea Green, 2005) and The Holistic Orchard (2011), and teamed up with Nancy to write The Herbalist’s Way (2005). His Lost Nation Orchard is part of the Holistic Orchard Network, and Michael also led the community orchard movement. Springtime in the Northwoods is a beautiful time of year when the natural world begins waking up from a long winter hibernation. We all have these natural rhythms within us as well that are intimately connected to the place we call home. For us in the North, this is a special time when we can tap into this much needed flow of life by literally tapping into the sap flow of Maple trees here at our farmstead. We also love savoring this sap fresh before heating & evaporating it into Maple Syrup. It is like drinking slightly sweetened water that is incredibly refreshing and also has trace minerals, antioxidants & a natural form of sugar. Learn more about this tradition from several voices speaking about the spirit of making Maple Syrup. ...the truth is that the earth endows us with great gifts, the other half is that the gift is not enough. The responsibility does not lie with the maples alone. The other half belongs to us; we participate in its transformation. It is our work, and our gratitude, that distills the sweetness. - Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding SweetgrassLearn more about the inspiring folks from this episode, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here > - - -Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find. In honor of our wintertime in our neck of the woods, we are focusing on different themes of making the most of long winter downtime in the Northern parts of the world. To start things off, we begin this series with introducing the concept of Slöjd (or Sloyd) which is a Swedish word that for many hundreds of years has referred to being self sufficient through the act of craft. Simple hand tools, simple techniques to build anything. Hear some interviews with several folks of the Scandinavian Slöjd tradition of woodworking and beyond to American, English & Japanese traditions as well."Slöjd is part of the self-sufficient household, how people survived before industrialization. Slöjd is the work method farmers used when they made tools for house building, farming and fishing, and objects for their household needs. For thousands of years, the knowledge of the material has deepened, and the use of the tools has evolved along with the understanding of how function, composition and form combine to make objects strong and useful. The word slöjd derives from the word stem slög, which dates to the 9th century. Slög means ingenious, clever and artful. It reflects the farmers’ struggle for survival and how it made them skilled in using the natural materials surrounding the farm: wood, flax, hide, fur, horn and me- tal. I have picked up a dialect expression from my home county, Västerbotten, that has become a personal motto. We say Int’ oslög, “not uncrafty,” about a person who is handy and practical. Slöjd in its pure self-sufficient use is characterized by an individual using simple tools with great skill, a deep knowledge of raw materials, and the ability to solve functional problems. The resulting objects are intended for the maker’s personal use." - Jögge SundquistLearn more about the inspiring folks from this episode, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here >Hear about green woodworking for carving spoons, turning bowls and more from voices like Jögge Sundquist, Jarrod Dahl, Ben Law, Barn the Spoon, Robin Wood, Sylva Spoon & more…Enjoy and happy woodworking!- - -Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find. In this episode, I want to share some interviews with Joel Salatin, his family & others he's inspired that focus on the themes of re-localizing and finding real solutions to the problems of our civilization from the ground up. How we can rebuild local communities and transform commerce by staying connected to nature, our neighbors, and the larger world while reducing our energy needs and eating more nourishing food. This is most likely the first of many episodes to share about Joel Salatin's inpiring work and perhaps we can even get an interview with Joel in the near future! Joel Salatin, 62, calls himself a Christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist lunatic farmer. Others who like him call him the most famous farmer in the world, the high priest of the pasture, and the most eclectic thinker from Virginia since Thomas Jefferson. With a room full of debate trophies from high school and college days, 12 published books, and a thriving multi-generational family farm, he draws on a lifetime of food, farming and fantasy to entertain and inspire audiences around the world. He’s as comfortable moving cows in a pasture as addressing CEOs in a Wall Street business conference. He co-owns, with his family, Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia. Featured in the New York Times bestseller Omnivore’s Dilemma and award-winning documentary Food Inc., the farm services more than 5,000 families, 50 restaurants, 10 retail outlets, and a farmers’ market with salad bar beef, pigaerator pork, pastured poultry, and forestry products. When he’s not on the road speaking, he’s at home on the farm, keeping the callouses on his hands and dirt under his fingernails, mentoring young people, inspiring visitors, and promoting local, regenerative food and farming systems.Learn more about Joel Salatin, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here >- - -Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find. Bill Mollison, the “Father of Permaculture,” has truly left the world a better place than he found it. As co-founder of the system of Permaculture with David Holmgren , he created a holistic design system that emulates systems that exist in Nature to create sustainable human settlements and food production systems which integrate harmoniously with the natural environment. Bill developed the Permaculture Institute and a formalized system for training Permaculture practitioners. His pioneering work had a broad and far-reaching global influence, directly impacted hundreds of thousands of lives, and indirectly affecting many millions more worldwide in a profound and positive way. This is most likely the first of many episodes to share about Bill Mollison in his amazing video series, 'Global Gardener'. Global Gardener is a documentary film series about the permaculture approach to sustainable agriculture. Bill Mollison presents the series' four episodes—"In the Tropics", "Dry Lands", "Cool Climates", and "Urban"—each of which addresses the application of permaculture principles in a different environmental context. I highly encourage you to watch all the videos, but here is the audio to learn from Bill's wisdom while in your garden or hammock - where the permaculture designer becomes a recliner ;) Permaculture is a philosophy of working with, rather than against nature; of protracted and thoughtful observation rather than protracted and thoughtless labor; and of looking at plants and animals in all their functions, rather than treating any area as a single product system― Bill MollisonLearn more about Bill Mollison, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here >- - -Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find.
