We’re back en La Sala again, this time with the artist Sita Bhaumik. She joins us to talk about her new exhibition Estamos contra el muro | We Are Against the Wall and to preview the exclusive Migration Mixtape we are producing for the show.

This month we welcome professional archivist and deejay T-Kay, host of Hip Hop Hooray out of Austin, Texas and Dublab’s The Afternoon Love-In out of Los Angeles. T-Kay has traveled the world collecting records with special attention to Brazil. Listen in as we dive deep into Brazil and head off to Angola, Indonesia and beyond.  

This month we visit the island referred to as Kiskeya or Quisqueya depending which side of the shared border of Haïti or La República Dominicana you live on. To lead us through a vinyl exploration of this beautiful shared musical history we are joined by former Music Director at KALX of UC Berkeley and current Latin Music Curator and Programmer at Pandora, Marcos Juarez. Important Note: This podcast was recorded before the recent disturbing deportation of Haitians taking place in the D.R.

The accordion, one of the most fascinating, unique and without question culturally important musical instruments that all of us pelangueros can’t get enough of. Yet to be honest, we actually know very little about these squeezable typewriter-looking devices. That is why we knew we had to dedicate an entire episode to the accordion and why we were so excited to welcome Professor of Ethnomusicology at Boston University, Co-Producer of Public Radio International’s Squeeze Box Stories and bad-ass acordeonista of the group Debo Band—Marié Abe. For this podcast we decided to try something we have never done before — set out to do a show without any records from our collection. Instead we went to a local record swap meet with a set budget of $50 each to create our playlist for the day. After a full afternoon of digging through many boxes of dusty records we headed straight back to La Sala to see if we spent our money wisely.
