Our reading from Matthew sets up an unbelievably important norm that determines not only how life unfolds here on earth but extends into infinity. Jesus, in this parable, explains to his disciples an aspect of God’s essence. Jesus explains what God is like. Jesus tells his followers that since God is forgiving, his followers must be forgiving. God is infinitely and absolutely forgiving therefore his people must be infinitely and absolutely forgiving. That’s a tall order. Frankly, it’s an impossible demand to make of a person, at least at first. If, however, we become transformed over the course of our walk with Jesus, maybe this isn’t totally impossible. Perhaps, the very path to eternal rest in God’s glory is the infinite forgiveness of all trespasses. It’s a wild thought, but I think that is what Matthew is trying to get the reader to see. So, let’s get after it!
