There is much greater depth to being salt and light when we draw out the other connected foundational elements- water and fire. These may be implicit in these verses in Matthew and in the context of the culture being spoken to but they are very explicitly dealt with throughout scripture in other places. We are told to be salt and light to the world. This episode breaks down many different aspects of what this means, from historical and cultural practices to metaphorical meaning. Like much of scripture, the Sermon on the Mount is full of passages that hold multiple meanings at the same time. It's very much a both/and sermon more than an either/or.
