Electricity rate reduction could provide brief respite from high cooling costs over the summer
PG&E customers will see a rate reduction this summer, but the relief will be temporary. Also, evacuations have been lifted for the Apache Fire in Butte County and the Sites Fire in Colusa County.Officials offer some advice to residents on what to do after returning home, and a lawsuit against the Shasta County Elections Office has been dismissed by a superior court judge this week.

What about wildfire? No mention of fire in Newsom’s State of the State speech
Gov. Gavin Newsom gave his annual State of the State Address yesterday. He mainly focused on policy accomplishments over the last year. He did mention some challenges, but wildfire wasn't one of them. Also, the Chico Police Department is working on encrypting its radio communications, and the town of Paradise’s water supply meets or exceeds state and federal public health standards.

Butte supervisors will discuss grant to create housing for people incompetent to stand trial
People facing felony charges who are deemed incompetent to stand trial could stay in Butte County for rehabilitation services and housing. Also, a group of Shasta County residents wants to review the Board of Supervisors’ conduct in appointing the new Registrar of Voters to see if it was legal, and the Chico City Council took a step last week to ease conflict over development proposals.

Rent stabilization denied by Chico City Council
Senior mobile home park residents led a long fight for rent stabilization in Chico but were shot down by a 2-4 council vote. Also, Shasta County supervisors have selected a former deputy district attorney with no experience managing elections as the new Registrar of Voters, and a new report found that the historic Hotel Marysville is at risk of collapse and may need to be demolished after a fire.

Grand Jury finds poor staph infection screening at Shasta County Jail
A report from the Shasta County Grand Jury found that inmates at the local jail were not properly screened or treated for MRSA, a staph infection that is contagious and prevalent in jails, prisons and hospitals. Also, the city of Oroville is looking to overhaul the way citizens report non-emergency needs, and Butte County will hold two more community meetings about a new program to provide no-cost building plans that are suitable for disaster recovery housing.

PG&E to host help center in Paradise today
Paradise residents who have questions about their electric service will be able to get answers from PG&E today. Also, some of California’s dams were built a century ago and dozens are in serious need of repair. A grant program was created last year to begin the repairs, but Gov. Gavin Newsom proposed cutting that funding, and this week the Shasta County’s Board of Supervisors will interview nine candidates for the county’s recently vacated Registrar of Voters position.

Chico City Council to discuss mobile home rent stabilization
Chico City Council will decide whether to approve this fiscal year’s budget. Staff will also come back with rent stabilization research per the council’s requests months back. Also, a new sobering center will soon be open in Chico, and the 1078 Gallery is hosting a fundraising event called “Bowls for Gaza” that aims to raise funds for Palestinians in need.
