Katherine Harrington is a ballerina turned executive and is the President & CEO of the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce. Katherine started in this role on April 1, 2022. During her tenue at the Chamber, she has built an award-winning team that enjoys many accomplishments. Some of them include, in 2022 the WDM Chamber was honored with the ACCE Chamber of the Year USA as one of three finalists. Over the last three years, she created several groundbreaking new programs and committees including the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee who produces the international, award-winning Athene Black & Brown Business Summit & Pitch Competition, Diversity Week, and Diversity Fundraiser. She also helped to create the DEI Workplace Excellence Awards that has been nationally recognized by ACCE as an event other Chambers around the country should adopt, the Best of the West Awards, the award-winning Racoon River Rally, WDM Newsletter, WDM Edge events, Business Survival Toolkit Covid events, Talent Attraction Partnerships and more. Karla McCollum, Director of Development for International Engagement for the Iowa State University Foundation, has over 15 years of international career experience which encompasses the fields of international admissions, recruitment, diplomacy, and now advancement. The desire for an international career began as a farm girl in southern Iowa learning about her family’s German grandparents experience immigrating to the US. However, a career in anything international looked like a pipe-dream and impossible.  Karla continued to dream and have faith through many years of impossibilities.  Today, Karla’s career opportunities have taken her to over 40 counties in Asia, South America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Europe. Karla has had a varied career that has encompassed working with international students in education, working with world governments through citizen diplomacy efforts for the state of Iowa, and now enjoying working in the field of advancement and helping international alumni give back to Iowa State University.
