Your latest guest referred to a particular line that he said came from flying down to Rio. He misspoke. That line came from the film the gay divorce, 1934. I wish that guest speakers would make sure that they have their fax correct before appearing on a podcast.

NitrateVille has now been in operation long enough for me to say that I’ve been visiting since I was a kid, and the wonderful people there (Mike included!) helped foster my voracious appetite for classic film. Now, as an adult pursuing the very kind of work NitrateVille Radio is all about, I’m pleased to say that my appetite remains throughly whetted. The variety of fascinating folks in the film world Mike interviews is staggering, and I love never knowing what corner of the community he’ll visit next. It’s extremely edifying to know that there is so much happening in the world of vintage film scholarship, exhibition, preservation, and more, and it’s even better that NitrateVille Radio offers a way to keep your finger on the pulse and a great time doing it!

Not only the best classic-movie podcast there is, but the best one I've ever heard since these things existed. Unlike so many podcasters who deal with this topic, Mike Gebert really knows his stuff, and is also a superb interviewer. It is also extremely well-produced. There's a whole range of interesting topics, and the guests are first-rate. Highest recommendation.

I’m totally focused and enjoying even when I don’t expect to be—art, restoration, history, the expansive story-telling properties of film. Recently I’ve learned about Fred Karno (discovered Chaplin, Laurel); Buster Keaton film preservation, new bio of director Curtis, the return of regional silent film festivals, Warners’, where all the Paramount films are… so much to enjoy here!

They offer a wide variety of historical topics/episodes to choose from. Their podcast about Dawson City Frozen Time gets 5 stars too. Great sound quality and easy-to-listen-to format.

Although I’ve often visited (and occasionally posted) on the Nitrateville forum, for some reason I had not listened to any of the podcasts. I have quite a few back episodes to catch up on now! What a treasure! Thanks Mike, for all of your hard work to arrange for the many wonderful guests to appear, and for your expertise and obvious passion for the subject. One of the best resources to keep up with what is happening in the silent and classic film world. I love the attention given to film archivists and love hearing about new restorations, home video releases, and books.

A highly eclectic mix of guests coupled with insightful interview questions and above average production makes this podcast highly informative and listenable. If you love vintage films, treat yourself and give it a listen. The latest episode features guests Kit Parker - one of the mainstays of 16mm non-theatrical distribution, who remains active in today’s digital environment; and Marianne Lewinsky, a guiding light behind Il Cinema Ritrovato (Bologna), one of the most beloved international film festivals. I love this podcast. It’s a must for classic film fans. With one foot in academia and the other on the mainstream, it’s inviting and deep at the same time. A great way to be up to date on new editions on DVDs and books on film.

This is the best podcast available for the silent film lover. They also talk a lot about the processes involved in bringing silent films back from being “lost”... the archiving, restoration, scoring, marketing of modern Blu-Ray issues of silent classics. It can get a bit technical in the best way. Episodes are done in a conversational style which gives the pleasant feeling of hanging out with two friends talking about Hollywood history. I like how the episodes can be about very narrow topics. As an example, they don’t talk about “Buster Keaton” but rather “Buster Keaton’s career beginning with Roscoe Arbuckle.”

I am not very familiar with vintage film, and found the podcast during the Kickstarter for "Sword of Granada". I have learned so much and greatly enjoy hearing about restoration projects, and the lives of folks who were (and still are) important to film and Hollywood.

Michael Gebert's interviews with people who are active in the world of classic Hollywood cinema are enjoyable, varied and well researched. Michael does an outstanding job of providing context for each interview, drawing out the guest on their topic and adding his own insight. I enjoyed the podcast when I was a guest and and appreciated that we had enough time to cover the topic in depth.

If you are at all interested in early film or film preservation, this podcast is a delightful and smart resource.

This is a consistently knowledgeable and fascinating podcast about silent and early talkies that is often not afraid to get into serious technical issues of preservation and restoration of films. One of my favorites with intriguing guests and topics.

If you love any realm of classic film, if you enjoy the nuance of research, technology and social history behind what comprises a film, you should have subscribed to this podcast already. Michael has wonderful guests: people that take film and the numerous components seriously, but really and truly love this art form and have fun in the process. They are not pretentious, and are (along with Michael) generous with their knowledge and their time. Follow their work and spread the word. As a fellow film lover, I am appreciative and enveloped by this great work. It’s a “must listen” (time and time again).

You’re not likely going to find many other film podcasts that spotlight the early life and lesser known chapters of the cinema’s existence as comprehensively as Nitrateville Radio. Definitely recommended for anyone inquiring into film history in much further depth than most other podcasts.

I very much enjoy the Nitrateville Podcast. The stories and interviews done are unique amongst classic Hollywood podcasts. They are almost always interesting, and frequently fascinating—in particular his show on the restoration of “Becky Sharp” and “Detour” and another show on researching the locations where silent comedies were shot back in the 1910s and 1920s.

Like this. Have interesting, informed guests; interact with guests intelligently; behave like an adult. Nitrateville radio is an entertaining, informative listen for anyone interested in classic film; a real pleasure. UPDATE: NitrateVille Radio continues to provide an unparalleled source of information direct from the experts, Episode 37 being the latest example with fascinating insight into the remarkable stories behind the new restorations of Becky Sharp and Detour.

For those who think that classic film begins and ends with Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, or Singing in the Rain, there are multiple websites and podcasts to choose from. But for those for whom the names Griffith, Weber, Pabst, Keaton, and Gilbert are still household names, there is only Nitrateville Radio - and thank God (and the deeply knowledgeable Micheal Gebert for it. Endlessly fascinating, in depth, and always entertaining, this is my go-to for a regular dose of cinematic obscurity and, boy, do I enjoy it. If you relish a nearby revival house, thrill to the sounds of the mighty Wurlitzer, or find your credit card maxed out due to Criterion and Flicker Alley must-have DVDs, then Nitrateville Radio is the place for you.

The best feeling in the world is having a podcast dedicated to the things you love. This podcast ticks all the boxes for me: discussion with interesting people doing things I love to hear about, in depth interviews about DVD/Blu-Ray sets I just purchased and information about things I have missed. Seriously, the very best podcast around for lovers of classic cinema.

I had to drive up the coast of California and listened to one after another.

Charming conversational interviews elevate what could very easily tip over into intimidating cinema academics into the highly listenable and friendly exploration of vintage cinema. Deserves greater exposure as one of the best movie podcasts out there.

This Podcast is wonderfully entertaining for anyone who loves classic films. In every episode at least one person is interviewed who is doing something really cool in the field like putting on the San Francisco Silent Film Festival or an expert on Colleen Moore with inside information on current restoration efforts. Highly recommended.

NitrateVille focuses on the 'classic' era of films, a title nebulous enough to cover pretty much anything before I was born (1974). Mr. Gebert does a great job exploring this period of film without focusing on one specific topic. Experts provide detail yet the conversation never gets dry or uninteresting. There is much to explore here. Most importantly, it makes me want to watch movies I wasn't interested in prior to listening to the podcast.

This is a must for lovers of classic films. Trust me, you'll love it!

I love silent films. Sometimes I just want to listen to something that give me that silent film fix while driving or walking. This podcast is perfect for that. And very high quality production too. Recommended for any classic film fan like myself.

If you love classic movies and especially if you're interested and invested in the *preservation* of these works, this is a delightful listen as Gebert talks to authors, preservationists, silent film accompanists and more.
